View Full Version : paint peeling
freeflowing 03-16-2006, 04:17 PM hello all,
I was just washing my car TC the other day and bam the paint just started peeling off the rear bumper. my first thought was i must have gotten rocks in the sponge or something then i noticed it started happening in other spots on the bumper i havent washed yet. so immmediately i called the dealer i usually take my car to in rockville,md and the service manager stated that he's seeing more tc come in for paint problems than any other car on his lot!! I baby and wash the hell out of my TC and its less than 1 year old.
is any one having paint peeling problems besides me.???
ScionBandit 03-16-2006, 04:32 PM nope, never heard or had any tC's come in for that
are you sure nothing nicked it,scratched it or anything???
what dealer do you usually go to in rockville???
if you want, you can bring to me at Lakeforest Toyota in gaithersburg
tyrantcold 03-16-2006, 04:35 PM sounds like they didnt properly clean off the mold release from the mold when they cast the bumper

Scott
TongMan 03-16-2006, 10:23 PM Yeah, please post some pics of your peeling paint. I've been hearing too much stories on paint issues. I hope I won't get a tC with paint problems.

where the hand prints are in the pic is where the flaking started
tricked_tC 03-17-2006, 01:57 AM Yea i see that happen to cars quite often in my work. What happens is the bumper isn't prepped properly before painting. Our bumpers are a rubber urethane, so there flexible. To get paint to stick to the rubber, an adhesion promoter is supposed to be sprayed on the bumper before any paint. Apparently, someone forgot that step.
ScionBandit 03-17-2006, 11:09 AM take it in...can't see it that well from the pics, or at least i can't this early in the a.m.
cmlloveless 03-18-2006, 01:17 AM I had this same problem! My paint just blew off when I sprayed it with a hose! But I could not get the dealer to fix it because they said I had to meat with the regional manager first and it would take a few months to get an appointment! So I scrapped the whole idea and am doing a bodykit instead!
chrischoi 03-18-2006, 03:41 AM i think that started happening to me. all over the car. ugh....
freeflowing 03-31-2006, 01:37 AM car is fixed and it didnt cost me a single dime.355 toyota did an excellent job

they send it to the body shop, or did they have the on-site painter do it?

madbutcher 03-31-2006, 06:06 PM I only had my tc since October and it has about 8 K miles on it and I am getting paint chips all over the place, and I baby this car, none of my previous cars had any paint issues and I beat them a lot harder
SciontCya 03-31-2006, 06:21 PM I used to live in PA - every car I owned had chips from the freakin' crap they put on the roads...
PrivateTucker 04-02-2006, 07:38 AM Yeah, I have complaints about the paint too. I guess be glad they're fixing it free of charge.
freeflowing 04-03-2006, 01:37 PM they had a painter come on site. the only problem now is getting rid of that paint smell but im not complaining. will post pics in a little while.

ok,good,,,,if the bodyshop had done it, that woulda been an issue
but since the on-site guy did it..your in good hands
omarq 04-03-2006, 05:25 PM Why is it an issue if the bodyshop had done it?
ScionBandit 04-03-2006, 05:39 PM um, cuz they SUCK
Darktitan 04-03-2006, 06:59 PM I keep hearin the same thing from so many people,
I know that the paint just sucks for scions, but how do you know if it's a problem that
you have to take up with the dealership. I've had a couple of cars in the past and
never really took care of them but I also baby my tc and it just gets worse .In a couple of months I might have to just re-paint the front end. I would hate to think that the same thing is going to happen to me. :nails:

taking it in,and having the dealer look at it wont hurt.
the worst that happens is they say no
omarq 04-03-2006, 08:31 PM Another thing... new cars sometimes get painted at the dealer up to a small amount of damage caused by transport. Sometimes the paint work is good... sometimes not. I think that's probably the cause of your problem. Its not very common for the factory to forget to put adhesion promotor on the bumper.
Its possible that the Scion's may seem to hagve higher rate of paint issues since they have a higher rate of possiblity of paint problems sue to their long overseas journey.

if any damage was done during transport,it would be disclosed to the customer at time of purchase
omarq 04-03-2006, 08:36 PM not necessarily.. from what I've heard there's a limit on the amount of work that can be done before they ahve to tell you. Of course this coulf be mfg specific
