Do you know a movie thats bloody awesome but may not be known to other people? If you do post it here! I wanna see a good moive thats not widly known or kinda underground.

Ill start!

Equilibrium-2002
http://www.electro-comicsonline.com/miramax/equilibrium.jpg

In a futuristic world, a strict regime has eliminated war by suppressing emotions: books, art and music are strictly forbidden and feeling is a crime punishable by death.

This movie in my opnion pwned the matrix! It was released in the theaters world wide but was not here in the states it went strait to dvd. It did awsome world wide they supposdly felt the sales were good enough to where they didnt have to realease here in the theaters! (bastardos!) If you seen Ultraviolet go watch this you will see where it got alot of its action scenes from.

I have to vouch for this movie! I love Christian Bale and the movie is awsome!! One of my favorites that not many people have seen would have to be Donnie Darko.

Bloody Sunday - Documentary about the events that divide the British and Irish in 1974.....A++++

Muholland Drive - Tells the truth as to what hollywood is all about...total mind fu*k!

Dead Alive - Is it a horror movie or is it a comedy? I say a perfect mix of both. Dark humor

The Weather Underground - Documentary on the radical political activist group the Weathermen, who organized in the 1960s to protest the Vietnam War.

I guess they played it around NorCal because I saw this movie in the theaters! Then, I waited forever for it to come out on DVD.

I wouldn't go so far as to say it's better than the Matrix. The story is nothing original (it's basically 1984), but the action scenes were pretty awesome. Seems like this movie was Bale's audition for Batman! I do agree it was really underrated....I really was surprised it wasn't more popular.

The Undertaker and His Pals...I liked it only because itw as a B screen movie filmed in the neighborhood my dad used to live in and it was more fun to make fun of than actually watch.

Two Lane Blacktop.
I want to say it was out in the 80's, a couple guys running across country to get to a big race; in a 55 Chevy. Very subdued acting ( James Taylor was in it I believe ), but when the car was the star of a scene--much more realisitic car drag runs then usually glorified in movies. Kind of an old school car movie.

Ong Bak (Thai Warrior)- Action movie filmed in Thailand with badass stunts (no wire work), notable since most of the fight scenes have the actors actually hitting each other, and HARD

Versus- Insane horror/action film directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, great sword fights/action scenes

Battle Royale- A class of Japanese high school students is randomly selected by lottery to be taken to remote island where they must fight to the death, until only one survivor is left.

OLD BOY!

http://www.kacc.org.uk/LKF/2004/LKF2004_assets/FF_old.jpg

Korean

Oh Dae-Su is an ordinary Seoul businessman with a wife and little daughter. After a drunken night on the town, he is abducted and locked up in a strange, private prison. No one will tell him why he's there nor who his jailer is. His fury builds to a single-minded focus revenge. 15 years later, he is unexpectedly freed, given a new suit, a cell phone and 5 days to unravel the mystery and discover the identity of the enemy who had him imprisoned. Seeking vengeance on all those involved, he soon finds that his enemy's tortures are just beginning.

There have been reviews I've read about saying "crappy fight scenes" and whatnot. Keep in mind this movie is meant to be realistic. Don't expect to see Jackie Chan or Jet Li martial arts here.

This has to be one of my favorite Psychotic-thrillers. Let me know what you thing.

P.S. make sure you get subtitles.

*EDIT*

almost forgot...I've heard rumors of hollywood buying the script and remaking this movie with Brad Pit and Johnny Depp. I'm highly anticipating this remake.

Akira Kurosawa's Ran.

One of the most harrowing film experience I've ever had. So goddamn depressing and sad.

I'll also have to vouch for RFAD and Pi. Darren Aronofsky is one of my favorite directors and I can't wait to see his upcoming work, The Fountain, which is currently in post-production. http://movies.apple.com/movies/wb/the_fountain/the_fountain-tsr_h.640.mov Looks awesome.

Darren Aronofsky and Matthew Libatique is one of the best director/cinematographer duo I have ever seen/known of.

Ran is a classic!

One of my favorite movies that no one seems to know is Amelie. Directed by Jean-Pierre Jeunet who also directed Delicatessen and City of Lost Children. He has a really easy to recognize style...Kinda like the french Tim Burton. A good date movie ;)

I know they already did another movie together called A very Long Engagement. It's another love story set in Paris, but this time back during the Great War. Pretty good, but kinda long and confusing.

Has anyone seen Run Lola, Run? Not obscure at all, but that was a cool flick...

For the dudes who recommended the Asian movies: where do you find out what's good? where do you rent them from? I'm not up on the latest cool movies, but I read GIANT ROBOT magazine for a bunch of good recommendations :)

I've seen this several times. I wouldn't call it confusing. You have to be willing to follow the story, but all the pieces are there and it does make sense. I saw it in a theatre when it was first released in the US. I speak french, though, so it was especially easy for me to follow.

This was a really good movie. I didn't like Amelie but I definitely recommend it. It's a story about a country boy who is drafted to the front of WWI and is sentenced to death for self-mutilation. Everyone believes he is dead but his fiance, who sets out on a journey to find him through the lives of the four other men condemned with him.

A very good film if you like period pieces around the first world war. That part of this film was excellently done.

Escape from Colditz - WWII escape movie from which most of the others were based.

Rustler's Rhapsody - Little known Tom Beringer sendup of B-Westerns A bit like Blazing Saddles, but with much more subtle humor.

Metropolis - A 1927 (!) silent by Fritz Lang. A spectacular work considering the limitations of the era.

Little Miss Sunshine - recent road movie with a very unexpected (and fun!) ending.

Wow, I've seen a good chunk of these movies. Go me! My roommate always gets korean movies. A lot of them are really frickin' good. If you can find it get Attack the Gas Station. It's bloody fantastic. Some of the plot and jokes you have to know a little bit about korean social norms, but you can usually figure it out pretty quick on your own.

Old Boy was based off of a manga from japan, liked the movie hated the plot.

Metropolis was released as a cartoon by some famous anime guy I think it was about 5 or 6 years ago with the same title.

Equilibrium is my most favorite move ever. If you liked it check out UltraViolet, by the same writer director and a very close feel. It's got milla jojovovich (sp?) in it too :).

SPL is a movie recently released in Hong Kong with Donny Yen (Blade 2 and Hero, he's the spear guy in hero) and Sammo Hung (Jackie Chan's very old friend and comrade Used to be on that TV show Marshall Law), kinda like a Tarintino movie. . . wouldn't be suprised if he were to bring it over here for the American audiences.

New Police story (I think is the name) is Jackie Chan's latest in HK, I don't think you'll ever see it stateside, but finding it shouldn't be too hard.

Army Of Darkness, I'm not into horror flicks but Bruce Campbell is one of my favorite actors.

Bubba Ho-Tep, another Bruce Campbell film, I think Don Ciccerro (sp?) worte the short story or directed it I forget. Anyway, it's about Elvis in an old peoples home being chased around by a Zombie that sucks old peoples life force from their bum hole. . . Little campy but fun!

Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (2006):

http://i119.photobucket.com/albums/o122/tc4italy/perfume4.jpg

Based on the bestselling novel by Patrick Süskind, "Perfume" is a story of murder and obsession set in 18th-century France. Jean-Baptiste Grenouille has a unique talent for discerning the scents and smells that swirl around him, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. Strangely lacking any scent of his own, he becomes obsessed with capturing the irresistible but elusive aroma of young womanhood. As Grenouille's obsession turns deadly, twelve young girls are found murdered. Panic breaks out as people rush to protect their daughters, while an unrepentant and unrelenting Grenouille still lacks the final ingredient to complete his quest.

a wierd classic: kinda slow, but, horrific in parts especially the ending

Nightwatch

an amazing russian flick about vampires and shapeshifters in modern moscow (worth a watch, even the english subtitles lookpart of the film)

Ringu and Ringu 2

I pimp this movie every chance I get:

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/Shallow.jpg

Shallow Grave is a 1994 black comedy feature film that marks the directorial debut of Danny Boyle (Trainspotting) with an original screenplay by John Hodge. The film also provided starring roles for the then unknown actors Ewan McGregor, Christopher Eccleston and Kerry Fox. The production was funded by Channel 4 television and the film distributed by Polygram Filmed Entertainment who as with their other releases generated a large amount of publicity for the film on a limited budget.

The film is set in Edinburgh, Scotland, although the majority of filming took place in Glasgow because the filmmakers received a £150,000 grant from the Glasgow Film Fund.

This film rocks hard core.

Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Delicatesan (mentioned) are also great. And for a little something more morbid:

I saw that La Hane movie, I think everyone should read about what was goin on before they watch it though. It made no sense to me until someone pointed out about the civil unrest of the younger people not being able to get jobs and stuff and how people are rioting over that. And it still goes on today. Vincent Cassel is one of the greatest actors in my book, plus wasn't he married to Monica Bellucci for a while, maybe he still is.

One of my favorite unknowns is Apartment Zero, starring Hart Bochner and Colin Firth. It was released in 1989 and was filmed in Argentina. The Washington Post said it was "A brilliantly crafted psychological drama". Video movie guide rated it 4 stars and said it was " a movie buffs dream". I have seen it many times and every time I watch it, I see something I missed before or have a clearer understanding of the dark, hidden parts of a mans soul. If you love suspense/ thrillers, this is it!

i'd actually advise against it. it's a pretty bad, semi-dated 80's movie.
but if you're a Dennis Hopper fan, then you kinda have to. it's grossely overacted, the villians in the movie aren't even realistic in their actions. but then again, it's david lynch.

you will feel "icky" the whole time while watching that movie, so while he's a good director being able to do that, it's not something that i want to see again, and i'd choose not to sit through it the first time if i could. DAMN YOU DAVID LYNCH!

B!TCH...love that movie!

Monty's Mom: So I called your house today, at two. You were still asleep, weren't you?
Monty: That's an understatement.
Monty's Mom: So what did you do last night? I trust my little angel didn't do anything immoral.
Monty: Well, ummm... Let's see. I started by getting completely hammered drunk. It was bad. Then drove, while intoxicated, to pick up this disease-infested hooker.
Monty's Mom: Uh huh...
Monty: From there... uh, let's see. Me and the hooker went back to my place...
Monty's Mom: The hooker and I.
Monty: Excuse me. The hooker and I went back to my place and from there... God, it was just a blur of intravenous drug abuse and unprotected sex, while taking the Lord's name in vain.
Monty's Mom: Dean, did you know that when Monty was a child everyone thought he was retarded?
Monty: Dean, doesn't my mom look old? I mean, much older than she rightfully should?
Monty's Mom: So why aren't you and Serena still together? I liked her.
Monty: I don't know. I guess it got old. We had a relationship based on orgasms.
Monty's Mom: Oh, how charming. You are being safe aren't you? I don't think I could handle the idea of you reproducing.
Monty: Come on, mom! Of course I'm being safe. I pull out.
Monty's Mom: Yes, well your father pulled out too but we've all seen the tragic end of that story.
Monty: You think I wanna have kids? Absolutely not! That's why I stick to anal sex.
Monty's Mom: If only I had been so lucky.

Memento- great movie!

Count of Monte Cristo- loved it, actually watched it a few times.

High Tension- Shot in Europe, pretty graphic slasher movie

Cube 1, 2, 3- about people trapped in square rooms and have to figure out how to get out without setting off the booby traps. Cube 1 was the best of the 3 I think.

Coneheads-one of my favorites!
Bubble Boy- hilarious!
Feast - From Project Greenlight. Lots of blood=good

Feast was one of my favorite Graphic Balls to the Walls crazy stupid horror ish movies!

The Host is an ok movie, it was a pretty good monster flick. I would have loved if they could have tweaked this script and had it been a remake of Godzilla, instead of that pile of crap with Matthew Broderick!

High Tension was a frickin crazy movie! Total mind screw of a movie.

One of of the most intriguing/disturbing characters I've ever watched. Awesome dark comedy/drama about a hot, rich sociopath girl with a sad but great ending...
Evan Rachel Wood and Ron Livingston are another reason to see it :][/table:03a7767dfc]

Pedophile meets his worst enemy.
Again, slightly twisted and laced with dark humor like Pretty Persuasion.
The ending leaves you feeling very torn[/table:03a7767dfc]

[table:03a7767dfc][col:03a7767dfc]http://www.optimumreleasing.com/dyn/igby_large.jpg[col:03a7767dfc]Igby Goes Down
"17 year old rich kid Igby Slocumb is a rebel with a cause: to break free from his pill-popping mother, his schizophrenic dad, and his fascist brother. Seduced by sexy older women and subverted by friends and family, the ever-resilient, witty and inventive Igby is determined to keep up - no matter what goes down."[/table:03a7767dfc]

JCVD- yes it stands for Jean Claude Van Damme(sp?) its his 1st movie in years, i think, & IMO, his BEST movie ever!! its not his typical kick & punch movie, he can actually act! like Oldboy, dont watch it in english!!! watch it in french w/ english subs!! a couple times, i almost forgot i was watching a movie because, its sort of about him & his career as an actor as well. great movie!

Bumpity bump!

Clockwork Orange is pretty trippy.
Pan's Labyrinth is friggin' awesome, it's sort of an adult-ish fairy tale. It's very dark, the Pan-Man freaked the Hell out of me! Also, all in Spanish (so I hope you can read the subtitles). haha.

If you like spaghetti westerns, this is the ultimate:

Sergio Leone equipped with a big budget and Henry Fonda as a bad guy.

Oh, and Claudia Cardinale...

It was chopped unmercifully for its US release and flopped, but the full length version is often cited as the best of the spaghetti westerns.

City of God... just watch it. Trust me.

The rest are kung-fu, samurai, and asian flicks that I think are notable...

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/dragondynastyheroes.jpg
Heroes of the East: A classic Shaw Bros. film starring Gordon Liu. Perfect film to understand where Quentin got a lot of his Kill Bill flavor from.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/Iron_Monkey.jpg
Iron Monkey: Donnie Yen flick. A MUST WATCH. This film, imo, marks the turning point for kung-fu flicks. One of the first to really make use of "wire-fu". Paved the way for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Has a great storyline.

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/stormriders.jpghttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/5xrt5oh.jpg
Storm Riders, and A Man Called Hero: Yet another huge turning point in hong kong and kung-fu films. Both films heavily make use of CGI to help tell the story, and add visual style to fight scenes. Notable scenes: Storm Riders-The final battle vs. Lord Conquer(played by legendary actor Sonny Chiba! Most people would know him as Street Fighter, or Hattori Hanzo from the Kill Bill film.) A Man Called Hero-The battle on the Statue of Liberty!

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/o-dvd-samurai-fiction.jpghttp://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/shadow.jpg
Samurai Fiction, and Red Shadow. Both films are: directed by Hiroyuki Nakano; quasi-period samurai films; hilarious, and worth a watch. (Netflix them, the style and comedy aren't for everyone, but I love em..)

http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/gunsandtalkshaut.jpg
GUNS AND TALKS: This is a GREAT Korean action film. Assassins. Guns. Comedy. It's got em all.

And I leave the most obscure, but very entertaining for last...
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y153/Akira619er/sukiyaki-western-django.jpg
Sukiyaki Western Django: All I can say is :rolling:. The Old West + Samurai + Gunmen + Swords + japanese actors/actresses attempting to speak english for the film + Quentin Tarantino = HILARIOUS. (And the shootout and swordplay scenes are surprisingly brilliant.) Fun fact: It was directed by Takashi Miike, the same guy who directed Ichi the Killer and Audition.

I hope you enjoy these movies for what they are, in all their quirky, strange, and humorous glory. Let me know what you think!

Thank God for Netflix and torrents... :icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin::icon_biggrin:
