Airless Tires

I just caught some info about these... apparently they're slated to be available "very soon". Actually now that I'm looking for more info, this isn't really "new" (January 2005) but it's still kinda cool! I'd trip out if I saw one of those driving down the street. Google TWEEL or AIRLESS TIRES.
Being in the plastics industry, I've known about these for quite some time (about a year and a half). The "spokes" are made from an engineering polymer, tread is rubber, and the center section of the "wheel" is aluminum if I recall correctly. Pretty cool concept, it'll be interesting to see those on the street.

New technology is usually expensive. And besides, everybody knows you can spend a small fortune on 'regular' tires.
IIRC, the biggest problem with 'em AS SHOWN was a horrendous noise level. As a practtical matter they'll have to cover the sides, and when they do that, they'll look very much like normal tires - just like the foam-filled flat-proof tires on some garbage trucks and military vehicles. Not easy to tell they aren't filled with pressurized air. :D
