Default What in the H@#$ is....

that foggy stuff that appears up at the corners of my windshield, its not condensation, it stays there through hot and cold. My old xb did it and my new one does it too,but also in the center of the windshield, it does not wipe away easily. When I turned in my old xb when I removed the garage door opener from the visor, there was a gelatinous buildup of the stuff where the remote was. Kind of disconcerting that I am probably breathing in this stuff. What is it?

dealer, I have never asked the dealer, I know windows in new cars get a fog on them from the chemicals coming off the new upholstery and all the other stuffs in the car. But I have never seen it always form in a cetralized spot like it does in the xb, no one else has experience this I find that hard to believe.

It could be a couple of things. Do you smoke? Nicotine can build up on things, but you would expect that. I believe it is off-gassing--
"What is offgassing? Offgassing is the release of chemicals from non-metallic substances under ambient or greater pressure conditions. Offgassing occurs continuously, but can be limited by the complete curing of polymeric material. As an example, offgassing (and the subsequent condensation of polymeric material) is responsible for the white film which occurs on the windows of new automobiles.

I don't smoke, and your explination sounds about right, just suprised it does it in the upper corners of my windshield I will post a pic if I get a chance to take one, I wonder how much it would cost a lab to anylyze it, you can scrape it off with a razor blade.

Wow, I've been driving my Xb for close to a year and have never experienced such a thing. Let us us know if you ever figure out what it was.

The substance is actually from a japanese mold spore called chin-kasu...it must have gotten in your car somehow during manufacture. It probably grew during the damp dark trip overseas.
It's pretty easy to get rid of...just cover your body and windshield with vagisil or monistat cream and drive around naked with the windows open for about an hour or so.

The best way is to obey all posted speed limits. It worked for me.
If you get pulled over, it'll be hard to get the police to understand- they drive crown victorias- they'll think your just a pervert, and if you explain that it's "a Japanese thing", it'll just be worse.
