View Full Version : Crazy ideas for the xB

So me and my friend were discussing mod options for the xB for when we save our money and get one...but then we came up with some nonsense ideas and thought they would be pretty cool to see. Anyways, here goes.

1. Instead of dropping it, put a lift kit on it and then put some big 33" mud tires. Sort of like a monster truck xB. Now only if it had 4WD...

2. Paint it black with a big red stripe like the A-team van...it would be cool. Ok, not really.

3. Paint it in camo paint and stick some sort of artillery on the roof and have a porthole for a gunner...might scare some people.

Anybody else have any insane crazy ideas?? Just for fun of course...

Yeah, how about some black and white paint for a police cruiser xB? Maybe you could just use it to write parking tickets (wouldn't be that hard to out run)

or take one of those hot lava xB's and paint a black 01 on the side...then do some hood sliding and hop through the windows General Lee style...

How about a full open top like a K5 Blazer. Pop the lid and leave nothing but the windshield and front door frames. Of course, you'd have to get some canvas half-doors. Hey this might fit into your 4x4 motif...

How about a GreyHound logo on the side of an xB...

How about painting it like the mystery machine from Scooby Doo?? Or maybe like a shuttlecraft from Star Trek The Next Generation...they're about the same shape

General xB is the best so far, it would have been the schoolbus but my kids probably wouldn't want to be dropped off in the "short bus".

Please nobody jack-up your xB, Thats a tip over waiting to happen.

I think it would bbe cool to open up the passenger side with either a suicide door or sliding door like a minivan and also have a tent/with screen that attaches to that side of the roof. Like a camper at the beach right.

I have some crazy mod ideas that might look sick if you could find a bodyshop that can do the work and make it look good, but I don't want to reveal any of them yet in case no one has thought of them.

But here are some crazy ideas:

I used to play lots and lots of Dance Dance Revolution, yeah I'm a dork. Anyways, way before the xB being available, I always wanted to turn a car into a mobile DDR Arcade - big TV in the trunk, big sound, big lights, removable metal dance pads. It just wasn't that feasible in my Olds Alero GLS sedan. The xB seems like the perfect car for such a ridiculous mod, plasma in the trunk, giant subs on the side with neon light rings, just like the arcade... Just park it in the arcade parking lot and freeplay for all the addicts!

Get a Yakima Roof Rack. A Loadwarrior basket. Get 4-Hella super hyper Safari lights. Attach the front of the load warrior basket. A fully enclosed from the elements, high duty battery or enclosed Solar Cells. Some type of switch or remote control and turn it on. Instant daylight  Mini-Landcruiser cometh. Perfect if you have the TCM, available color on the Landcruiser. I would do it, but not enough dough.

Some great ideas...I espescially like the Ninja Turtles van and the mobile DDR arcade...the thing w/ the swat van and the midgets would also be quite hilarious.

I like the idea of the retractable/removable roof...and if there were no support between the c-pillars, and an easy way to take your hatch off, you could put a couple lawn chairs and an ice chest in the back, back it up to the side of a lake and go fishing without leaving your car.

I'm curious to see if an extended xB limosine ever pops up anywhere. I'd take that to prom or whatever...lol.

I've actually seen a Limo xb a while back. It was actually more like a bB Limo since it was righthand drive. I saw it on the 5 freeway going South. This was the first xb / bB I've ever seen in California. When I saw it, it had a "Just Married" sign on the back and the Groom was driving it with the Bride at the very back. I knew it was a bB through scale modeling catalogs and I recalled such a car. It was sometime right before the xb was released in the US.

Has anyone else seen this?

OH, I thought someone would run some new frame rails. Do some firewall work and do a real RWD coversion using some mini tubs in the rear. Maybe a small V6/auto/9 inch rearend. Would be a sweet little package if done right.

How in the heck is what that builder is doing "weak sauce." He took the most logical route to accomplish his goals with the car. I have seen it in person, and I wouldn't have taken a different route if I were the one doing it.

The Toyota minitruck frame is the perfect option. First, you stay brand loyal. Second, you have tons of suspension options. Third, you get lots of motor options. (I think he made a good choice.) Fourth, you increase the structural rigidity and driveability of the vehicle.

I really am not getting what part of the build (other than the hideous vinyl graphics to hide an incomplete vehicle) is "weak sauce." Would you prefer that he stuck with a weak unibody that was never designed to see the kinds of loads that would be applied to it by making this conversion?

I just don't get your statement.

bB2NER
04-21-2006, 02:56 AM
I think he means it's weak (lame) because of the way it was done. Instead of dropping it on a RWD frame he could have just reinforced what was there and do a true RWD conversion. Trying to do it the way Toyota would have from the factory instead of taking the easy route.

JDMJim
04-21-2006, 03:03 AM
I thought putting the xB body on a rear drive frame would be considered a conversion. It's in the latest Scion Magazine at the dealer. All white cars o the cover. I thought it was cool.

RTon20s
04-21-2006, 06:13 PM
What you have to keep in mind is that the builder has a whole lot more planned than just a RWD conversion. The xB he is building is also bagged all the way around as well as "body dropped." If you could call it that. To get the same stance using the standard unibody would have meant a ton of hacking and the structural integrity would have gone to crap.

The use of a Toyota truck frame was the most cost effective manor with which to achieve the goals the builder was looking for. The builder put himself time and money ahead by taking this route rather than hacking and rebuilding the existing structural elements of the chassis. You really have to look at the big picture of the build, not just one aspect. There is no "weak sauce" about it.

Someone has to say it. Might as well be me. Double decker xB. Think old London bus with two layers of windows and 7' high doors. Ridiculously high, and horribly unstable, but cool!... You could stand up in it! You'd also have the option of adding overhead baggage stowage, like on Greyhound or an airplane. And you'd be able to see it in between all those SUV's at the mall!
But seriously, though, I am planning on raising mine 1" with a set of custom spacers above the struts and spring seats and adding at least a 27" tall tire for a total of about 2" of lift. Not alot, but I'd like to brag about 8" of ground clearance. Maybe take a pic with the Toyota Gnome under it...

The "Smart Box" - chop the passenger section out of it. If you've got Style RV #24, open it to page 10-11, but don't open the magazine all the way and you'll get the general idea. You can control the amount of chop by opening it more or less fully.
