Car alarm video recording? Just a wish idea here...
The idea was to mount a small web cam in the dash, and connect it to some sort of recording device like a flash drive. Have the whole thing powered by the line your alarm is hooked to, or at least triggered by the alarm going off, so that if the car was broken into, after a couple seconds to boot the device starts recording pics as fast as the flash drive could record them. Then you might have a chance to catch the thief who stole any other goodies from the car.
My digital camera car take over 1000 pics at 640x480 on a 128mb chip, and that should have decent enough quality assuming the lighting is ok. There's always exceptions to the rule or instances where it wouldn't work I'm sure. I was just curious if anyone had played with web cams or in-car PC setups where this might work. Depending on the angle, you could catch a glimpse out the driver's window, like where a cop stands to give you that ticket. Toss a microphone bud up in the driver sun visor, and if you're stopped you can record the entire stop. Or use it to record road rage incidents if you leave the web cam free to move around.
I've seen writeups where people use a mini-itx board and a flash drive to load an mp3 player stored under the seat etc, and thought why not add car security to the deal? Or even more extreme/fantasy would be a wireless transmitter to send data into your house when the car is broken into while in the driveway. Just some (silly) thoughts.
