View Full Version : AW Header Installation question
Ferocious 03-29-2006, 08:42 PM Ok i just recieved my AW header...now the question i have is should i install it right away or should i wait til i order my S-pipe and install them together at the same time... i got some info but more opinions are aprreciated THanks
mattvs 03-29-2006, 09:12 PM do you want to install 1 pipe, wait a week and install another pipe or wait a week and install 2 pipes.
it doesnt exactly seem like an overly complicated install (i.e. unbolt, unbolt, take off o2, swap, bolt bolt)
ufcknockouts 03-29-2006, 10:03 PM yeah im having the same difficulties. im not sure whether or not to wait for the s pipe. would I have to take the header off to install the s pipe? or can i come from the back? which way would be easier?
Bsmntcuts 03-30-2006, 01:38 AM No you dont have to take the header off. The s-pipe install isnt difficult at all. Its 4 bolts and the 02 sensor. Just make sure you pick up a new donut gasket at the dealership tho for when u put on the header. Just ask them for the gasket that goes between the exhaust manifold and the s-pipe. You can find it in the Parts fiche here on scion life and get the part # to make it easier. As far as waiting till you get an s-pipe. It depends on how far apart you are ordering them. If its a week i would wait but a month, i dont think i could wait that long. Installing the header with or without the new s-pipe at the same time isnt going to affect the install. Up to u.
Ferocious 03-30-2006, 05:54 AM alright thanks guys i think im gonna go ahead and install the AW headers then i can jsut wait for the other stufff and do it later.... so i was just looknig at the headers i recieved today and it has a Sensor hole on it...and i remmber hearing that the sensor is on the s-pipe ..so im jsut a lil confused.... thanks
Kilo6_one 03-30-2006, 06:35 AM what is the best anti-fouler? or are the all the same? J/K becasue im in the same boat, and want to wait to install everything at one time.

tCing_U 03-30-2006, 07:04 AM be careful on that 02 sensor, make sure engine is cooled down --> WD-40 that b!tch too. Use a new exhaust manifold gasket theyre about $35 if i remember...you dont really need new pipe gaskets but up to you. GL!
Bsmntcuts 03-30-2006, 10:37 AM There are 2 sensors. The Air/Fuel sensor in the header and the O2 sensor in the s-pipe. Spray some good penetrating oil on the one in the exhaust manifold for a few days before you attempt to remove it. Mine seemed to be cross threaded from the factory and when i tried to remove it all of the threads were stripped out and i had to buy a new one. It cost $230. Best non-foulers are help! brand and they are 18mm size
ufcknockouts 03-30-2006, 03:43 PM if i have the dealership install the headers will they automatically put a new gasket on or will I have to tell them?
Kilo6_one 03-30-2006, 04:03 PM so let me get this straight, you dont need to remove the A/F sensor? you only replace the 02 sensor?
im lost
Bsmntcuts 03-30-2006, 07:13 PM You need to remove one sensor when installing a header and one sensor when installing an s-pipe.
When installing the header, you will need to take the sensor out of the stock header and put it in the new header The aftermarket headers have a hole for it to be screwed into. Same thing with the s-pipe. There is a sensor screwed into it as well and that needs to be installed into the new s-pipe.
The dealership might not put a new gasket on there. I would tell them to just incase. and they are going to charge you about $35 just for the gasket.
Check my post about stripping the sensor from a while back:

Bsmntcuts 03-30-2006, 07:18 PM The Air/fuel sensor in the header is the only one of the 2 sensors that people have had problems with getting out. When removing the one on the s-pipe the penetrating oil is not as important. Its still reccomended though. Mine came out of the s-pipe just like a regular bolt. No struggle at all. Just a little WD-40.
Kilo6_one 04-01-2006, 07:49 AM so the "help" brand anti foulers are universal, i just need to get the 18mm?
Bsmntcuts 04-03-2006, 04:21 PM yeah, 18mm
Bsmntcuts 04-03-2006, 04:23 PM You can search and find a how to on the non-foulers/anti-foulers. Using Non foulers are not scion specific either. You can search on yahoo and google too.
