Default Whats going on?Poor Gas mileage

When i decided to purchase my XB i did it because i wanted a comfortable/spacious ride with A/C and that could provide good gas mileage. Well i was correct about the Spacious ride and A/C but im not so sure im too happy with the Gas mileage department..It has simply been horrible to the point that my 12 sec Turbo Civic gets better gas mileage than my XB..i can squeeze 23-26mpg (city)out of the civic when driving it easy, even driving it at 65-70mph, but it seems very hard to even get that kind of gas performance outta the Toaster...

As far as calculations go...if the average is around 30mpg city driving and the gas tank is 11.9 galons then i should be getting 357miles out of a full tank(more on Highway driving). I think i have gotten 32mpg just Once when the XB was new and after thatit has been downhill...

I drive the XB very conservative, take it max to 3000rpms..sometimes ____ft at 2,500..I find myself 98% of the time cruising in 5th and average speeds are 40-50mph in the city.. I can't even get above 250miles per full tank..

Last week it just took 105miles to drain half tank including driving it as far as i could with the gas light on...The first half of the tank seems to go slow but the other half goes like if it was a V8..

A month ago i went for a long trip..Highway and city combined..I got 185miles from the first half of the tank, this was mostly highway driving at 65-70mph...The other half tank just took me 123miles for a total of 308miles or 25.8mpg total..

What the heck is going on?

It is a manual tranny XB and it has 4300miles so its way passed the break in period so it is supposed to even get better gas mileage. I drive with A/C on...i do get a lot of traffic Jam(stop and go) but even the civic does better at stop and go..

How are you calculating your mileage? If you're going by how far you go on a tankful, it won't be accurate. Keep track of the miles driven and the gallons delivered into the tank for at least four tankfuls, and then divide miles by gallons see how it does. If you're already doing that . . . nevermind.

Perhaps your odometer is wrong. Next you are on a road with mile markers, check your odometer.

I leave the XB basically stay w/o any gas..I get to the Gas station with the fuel light on and almost stalling from no gas..I fill up my tank untill it cant take no more, i reset my Trip A to zero(0) and drive till i hit the gas station again with almost no fuel.

going until you are 'almost stalling' is probably not the most convenient way to figure out your mileage. here is what i suggest trying/

first, make sure your tire pressures are correct. when they are cold, inflate them to the recommended pressures in your owner's manual.

then (ideally) you would fill up at the same gas station, same pump, same time of day and stop on the first click. then you reset your trip meter to zero as soon as you start the car. then you would drive the same route between fillups until you are at 1/4 to 1/8 tank then fill up keeping as many of the above pump parameters the same as possible. note mileage driven (i used to write it on the receipt), and divide by gallons pumped. repeat for at least 3-4 fillups and take average of mileage calculations.

This may sound odd (as it did to me while I was doing it) but try not shifting until you hit about 4000rpm. It goes against common sense but my box gets greater MPG when I shift like that.

Previously I always shifted around 3K, but my milage dropped below 30MPG. Then I upped the RPMs and milage is back up. Has been this way for two tanks now, but I am going to keep track for another two, average them all out and get a decently accurate MPG rating.

Another this is I RARELY go above 65mph on the freeway.

You do not once say that you went X miles on Y gallons. You keep refering to the guage. Don't go by the guage, just do the math on a few tanks. Carry a little calculator in the glovebox, print the gas tickets, write the mpg on each ticket and save them. Then see if you have a problem.

While my MT xB was under 1,000 miles, I broke it in with contstant 3/4 throttle acceleration and deceleration, not exceeding 3000 rpm, and got 33 mpg on two tanks. This week it passed 1,000 miles so I tried to see how gently I could drive it, and got 40 mpg.

The toaster is 100% stock..nothing done to it..Stock 15"rims and stock motor.

I will try to write the Info on the receipts and calculate again but i gues the difference wont be that much.

It will be that much. What you were doing is little more than a wild ___ guess. The way to calculate it is simple. Fill up the car. If you want to be really precise about it, fill it up at a station you normally use and pay attention to how many times you click it. Reset a trip meter. Drive until you need gas. Fill it up again, using the same station and click it the same number of times. Now, check your trip meter. Divide the number of miles by the number of gallons you just put in it. That is your gas mileage without any guess work.

My xB with stock 15" wheels had an odometer variance of about 3% so I was actually traveling a little farther than the odometer said, and thus getting better gas mileage than it appeared. I have seen seveal threads about this and it seems the odo was set up to allow us to run larger wheels and not have as much difference in speed displayed.

you aren't the only one. i've never seen above 27 mpg in either of my xb's and that's with driving conservatively &racing it too

Default gas mileage

I have a RS 2.0 with automatic. I drive 70 miles round trip to work and average 33-34 mpg. I fill up at the same station and the same pump. I always wait till I am under a quarter of a tank to fill up. I have kept accurate records of my gas mileage since new. I have almost 25000 miles on my box. Only engine mods are a drop in K&N filter (made no difference in mileage) and Bosch Platnium 4 plugs (also no difference in mileage). I drive a combination of city and highway. When I get on the interstate I do notice my mileage drops if I drive over 75mph. I have been looking at getting a Scan Gauge so I can see what my gas mileage is while driving, to find the most efficient speed. Plus I can use it on my wifes Highlander to reset the tire warning light that the dealer has such a hard time getting reset.

I have a2005 xB that until recently was running essentially stock all around. If I drive gently in the city I get around 27 MPG, if I take a long freeway trip running 65-75 most of the time, I get around 36MPG, if I drive it around town like I stole it I can drop the milage all the way down to 22 MPG.

The xB is VERY sensitive to driving style.

(Out of the dealership my odometer was around 3 percent off, so I was actually getting 3% better gas milage than those figures above, since I've never bothered to make the correction when calculating my MPG.)

My problem is the xB can be too much fun if I flog it. I tend to drive the poor thing in a rather 'spirited' manner more often than not.

The tC is tuned similarly. I can get from 24-30+ mpg depending on how I drive it. Getting a scangauge to see what makes it do what.
