So I'm getting my windows tinted sometime in the next month but I dont want to go too dark with them because I don't like that kind of look. Anyone want to post of up pictures of there TC's with the percentage of darkness so I can get some ideas? I searched real quick but nothing came up.

This is a good idea. I think we need a single thread like this.

Here's what I'd like to see:
- Post just a couple pics (2-3)
- Be sure to specify the tint % you have (otherwise it's useless)

I would recommend a 35% tint because we do have dark interiors. If you went to a 15% then it would pretty much look blacked out. When I tint my car, I will be going with the 35% if that helps you any. Huge thanks to Isotope for a perfect example

If you want to be safe go with 35% all the way around. This is the legal limit for tint. If you want darker but not all the way dark i would go with a 25% all the way around. If you want dark so no one can see you i would roll with 15%. But you must watch out for the police. The po po's have these spechial magnets that go on each side of the window and they can read the tint percentage. Thats how i got my ticket. But this may not be in all states, maybe just in washington. :lalala:

remember kids, in CA, you can't tint the front side windows...thats what i keep hearing at least, i've yet to get pull over for tints on my other cars.

The only time I was pulled over the cop just wanted to know what kind of car I had. (I was so sweatin' bullets because I thought he was going to pinch me for some of my 'slightly' illegal mods. :relief:) Just be sure to check your State Tint Laws to find out how much you can tint. Lastly, when you do tint-do the sides all the same %. It breaks the flow of the lines on the tC when I see the rear quarters darker then the driver/passenger windows. (Just my honest opinion.)

Mine's 15%, took some getting used to.

However, there are a lot of raised trucks and cars with HID lights around where I live, it's nice to not be blinded every time I check my rearview mirror. :P

35% is good tint if you're concerned about going too dark.

What is a good percentage to get on the front windshield. I was thinking 20% ALL the way around but was curious as to others thought would look good.

I like The Instigators tints. It seems like a real dark 20% but I don't know if that would be too dark for the front.

I just got tint installed, I went with Suntek Infinity OP 35% quaters and 20% for the back glass. This is a semi reflective tint that changes appearance under different lighting conditions. It appears black when sunny and silver/reflective on cloudy days.

Usually when you see tint with that purple hue, it's just black tint that has faded, and yes, it's awful. To avoid that, avoid the cheap tint! Most shops offer three or four different brands of tint, and you can bet that the cheapest two are going to fade within a few years. I highly recommend 3M. I have 3M 20% all around, but no pictures yet. Maybe I'll go wash the car right now and take some pics... Yeah, I'll be back soon with some pics. :P

By the way MJVsTC, 3M has a warranty (I don't remember how long) that it won't crack, bubble or fade. I know there's a few other companies that do as well, so look for that if you don't want them to turn purple.

Yeah, I didn't ask for seven inches, I just asked him to go just below the rear view mirror so that there was a flat, uninterupted line straight across the bottom of the banner and that's how it turned out. And it's about 8 inches on the outsides and 6 1/2 inches in the middle, so I rounded. :P

I have 32% all around, but as I posted in another thread, I got pulled over and cited for it (Cali)

3M has a lifetime warranty. I forgot to mention that I have 3M tint on mine when I posted pix back on page 1. 3M costs more, but is definitely worth it IMHO.

I just got my BSP TC tinted 15% all around, with 50% on the front windshield...
I love it especially at night because you can't see in from the outside and isn't hard to see out of at night, but if you are worried about being pulled over I would recommend 20%.

Cant wait to get mine done. Im going to get 5% rear 20% sides, with a 5 inch white banner on my windshield

It's a pain in the ___ for my drivers side windows. I took it once already and they redid it because of little bubbles, now I have to take it again because of another small bubble on the back quarter and big one on the drivers side.

But it costed me $200+ so I'm not stopping until it's absolutely perfect.

Yeah if you're going to pay that much for tint, they better do it right.

It cost a lot, but they are really good tint. I park my car in the hot Hawaiian sun, and it takes less than 3 minutes to cool down with my AC. Unfortunately for me, the passenger side tint has 3 major scratches, prolly on the film before installation since you can't feel the scratch. I'm having them redo it on Thursday... hey if I paid that much, it better work.

I went with legal tint, and I gotta say... its really not dark enough. When you look at it, you think its not even tinted, but then if you see a car that's not tinted, then you say, "Oh, it is tinted"... but yeah, not dark enough for my liking. I got it legal because in Hawaii I heard its $280 per window. OUCH.

Your right about that. It's annoying to keep going back and forth to shops to get thinks fixed but gotta do what u gotta do.

When you got 5% all around did you tint your moon/sunroof as well? I didn't get mine done, and the difference in color looks awkward.

I didnt do my sunroof.....Its not that important to me plus u cant really see the difference IMO.

Well good work is not cheap and cheap work is not good! That is very true about window tinting. Its about good technique so make sure the installers at the shop of your choice have skill and years behind them.

I highly recommend 3M window films being that they have a lifetime warranty against any defects of any kind including changing color. Any peeling, fading, purple windows, hazing will be covered. Now the film is made in California and we know how hot it can get and the amount of sun Cali gets throughout the year. So for other films which are made in the Eastern United States or German made (Huper Optik) these films are not ( and I have tried personally) not up to par with 3M in my opinion being 3M invented window films and have exclusive technology for testing and in their films. I do understand most films have a lifetime warranty but make sure if you go with another film besides 3M, GET THAT WARRANTY!!

That is disgusting! You might as well put steelies on because that is what your rims look like now. Also, If your gonna go that route, you forgot to black out your headlights and third tail light. Why do so many people do this to their cars? It is hideous! I think contrasting colors looks alot better, such as 5% tint on a white car or silver rims on a black car.

20% is perfect. It's just dark enough and the 5-0 can still see your face. If you live in the Philly area, lemme know and I'll recommend a place you can get it done for a really good deal and good job.

So far so good for me right now... I wanted something like 35% on my windshield too, but opted for 50%. I have 15% all around and it's dark, I know your car must be extremely dark inside with 35%.

What are the actual state driving laws for after-market window tinting?

Windshield
Glass coating or sunscreening devices

Cannot extend downward beyond the AS-1 line; or
Cannot extend more than 5 inches from the top of the windshield without an AS-1 line.
If sunscreening devices are used above the AS-1 area of the windshield, the light transmittance value must be 25% or more;
The luminous reflectance of any additional sunscreening devices used must be 25% or less;
Sunscreening device cannot be red, blue or amber in color.

Side Windows
All side windows must have at least 25% light transmittance and luminous reflectance of 25% or less, over the entire surface area of the window.

Rear Window
If vehicle has left and right outside mirrors, there is no minimum light transmission requirement.
If not equipped with both outside mirrors, the rear window must have no less than 25% light transmittance and a luminous reflectance of 25% or less.
The manufacturers installed glazing shade band is excluded.

I post sunny vs. cloudy and viewing angle becuse tint looks darker on cloudy days, and when viewed from the rear. (Light coming in from the front windshield makes the front tint look lighter) My sunroof shades were open in all pics. It gets a little darker when you close them. The tint is a pretty good match for the stock roof tint.

The windshield ha no tint on it. I actually don't really like the "top tint stripe" look too much. The sunroof is also untouched, with only the factory tint. The tint is on the driver and passenger front windows, driver and passenger rear windows, and rear windshield. The tint on the windows is pretty much exactly the same shade as the factory tint on the sunroof. Hope that helps!

Thanks to everyone who posted pics of their tint. It really helps to decide what to get. Tinting the front side windows is illegal where I'm from, but I'm thinking if I do the hatch and back sides darker than the front sides, then it will be less noticable. I'd rather have it even all around, but I don't want the hassle of getting a ticket and having to take it off. Has anyone used 45%-50% on the front sides or is that basically pointless?

it is stock at like 70% and 50% is pretty much pointless...i have 20% around and have no problems with it. I live in the city so cops really could care less about tint. Anything below 70% is illegal here by the way.

I got my tint early last month. The brand is Llumar and it comes with a lifetime warranty. 70% is the legal limit here (which is stock), so I went with 35% all around except my windshield.

It is also important to do a little research on the tint shop you plan on going to. I went to a place where their tint specialist never did a Scion tC before. Sometimes, this is ok - but the guy who did my tint put the weather strips on my window on wrong. I ended up taking of the door panels to fix both sides and then resetting my auto up/down configurations. My tint actually was damaged by the weather strips, as I noticed it within a few days after. I took it back to the shop a few weeks ago, and they redid the tint on both windows. It was such a hassle. Just research, etc.

I've got some coupons from a few tinters here... need to call this one tinter, see what they can offer me

apparently cars from our MB and Jaguar dealerships go there for tinting, and they sell Llumar so we'll see...

I got my tint early last month. The brand is Llumar and it comes with a lifetime warranty. 70% is the legal limit here (which is stock), so I went with 35% all around except my windshield.

It is also important to do a little research on the tint shop you plan on going to. I went to a place where their tint specialist never did a Scion tC before. Sometimes, this is ok - but the guy who did my tint put the weather strips on my window on wrong. I ended up taking of the door panels to fix both sides and then resetting my auto up/down configurations. My tint actually was damaged by the weather strips, as I noticed it within a few days after. I took it back to the shop a few weeks ago, and they redid the tint on both windows. It was such a hassle. Just research, etc.

You sure that's 35%? I just got my Llumar done. I got 15% and it looks as dark as yours. The 35% they showed my looked a lot lighter, I'll post pics when I get a chance.

Your first pics were in the shade more with dark objects in the backround and the second pics were more in the sun with lighter a backround. That is probably the difference.

Most of these pictures are showing darker than they really are, because most of them are taken at an extreme angle to the window. The camera should be perpendicular to the window to show actual tint, IMO.

i had 33% all around at a local tint shop for $125 with a lifetime bubble/fade/peel warranty. I like'em but I'm thinking about going back and having 20% installed all around.

As for cops here (in NC) they won't even turn their heads as long as it's not limo tint. my friends a cop and he said he has bigger things to worry about. - although, its hard to get it inspected with anything darker than 30% unless you kno someone.

I want to get my windsheild tinted but I dont know if they'd do it.

the darkest i think you should go is 20%, depending on where you live and the cops.

I'm Lookin for Timts on BSP tC's

i have 5% on the back and 17% on the front and i got them done in march and alll of the sudden in junthe last week i have gotten like 7 tickets seriously for them one after another some not even 10miles from the next one does anyone know the exact laws for the state of va im tierd of this and i am now getting in trouble for stupid stuff like stuff hanging from the rearview mirrior someone please help im getting my front taken off today and i need to know if thats gonna be okay or what not please someone write back haha

Sooo... I've been trying to decide on a tint for my BSP... Im leaning toward 35%... or maybe a little darker. I was going to go with the 3M but no one in my area seems to tint with that... Llumar seems to be the trend. Does anyone have a preference between 3m and Llumar?

ALSO Im having an extra hard time trying to find a tint shop.. folks in Alabama don't seem to know what my car is.. :nails: Which makes me hella nervous... the person actually asked me if my "Ty-on" (as he said it) was the one that looks like a box... :tap:

What do you guys think the lowest % I can go with (living in California) without the cops hassling me? Legal limit on the front passenger and driver sides are 70% but I want something around 40% or 50%, with the rear and hatch being somewhat lower.

i am in california.
My car is black.
I wanted to get dark in the back, and light in the front.
there is light, med, dark, limo shades.
on my last car i had Med in the back and light in the front.
but it still got hot and it looked okay.
i think i am going to get Dark in the back and Med in the front.
As far as legal issues, is it okay to tint as dark as you want in the back? i know the front is none at all.
also, would Limo in the back and med in the front look cool?

Mine's 15%, took some getting used to.

However, there are a lot of raised trucks and cars with HID lights around where I live, it's nice to not be blinded every time I check my rearview mirror. :P

35% is good tint if you're concerned about going too dark.

Thought I would add to the list -

I went legal and did 35% on the sides and the rear, and did nothing to the windshield. The tint is 3M Colorstable and is guaranteed not to fade.

Pics were taken on a very sunny day. It looks a lot darker when it's cloudy or parked in the shade.

i'm a total n00b to all this, so here's my dumb question
va state law says that the tint must allow %50 percent of visible light thru on the front windows, and %35 on the back and rear windows.
soooo what % tint do i need to get? if i get 35% all around, am i still going to get a ticket?

If the law says 50% then you need to get 50% or higher. You may or may not get a ticket with 35%, but it will be illegal.

and 50% is pretty useless isn't it? and if i do 50 up front 35 in back it's going to look fugly....damn

I used to have 18% all around but I got busted too often. I downgraded to 50% in the front and kept the 18% in the back. It doesn't look bad.

Yeah it is. But mine looks darker than it is. In person, Its so light you cant even tell its there. But who cares if its illegal. Just add it to the list of illegal things on my car. haha

I used to have an eclipse I had 15% all arround. I got pulled over to days later and got a ticket/warning. I knew they were illegal so I got them inspected thinking maybe they will let it slide. they didn't I ended up getting 50% on the front. I hated it. It was black in the back and it looked tintless in the front. I would suggest trying to get 35% all around if you get pulled over at least you tried, then change it.

So I got my tint done Thursday. I'm So excited the car looks so much better even though it still needs a bath. I decided to go with 20% all around and yes it is illegal in IN but hell i dont care. Also a funny story to add to this. I was leaving my grams in Oak Lawn and heading out to my moms in Tinley when not more than about a half hour of me driving the car total (to grams then from there to 111th and central) did i get half a$$ pulled over. I was on 111th going west when i look in my rear view mirror and see an unmarked cop car flip on his lights and go around the car that was in the right lane and come up behind me. I flip on my turn signal to get over to the right lane thinking he was going to pass by when he follows me. I turn my hazards on and pull over. he honks his horn and i look in the rearview to see him waving me to keep going. I'm thinking he wants me off 111th and prolly wants me to pull into that lot 1/2 a block up. As i start to go only doing about 25 speed limit 40 i see him turn off his lights and start to come around to the driver side of me so i roll down my window and so does he then telling me "Your from Indiana nevermind" and he drives off. WTF?? I'm confused at this point then it dawns on me I have a tinted license plate cover on my car so the tints prolly caught his eye then when he couldnt see my license plate number cause the dang thing was so dirty he figured he get me cause its illegal in IL. so the moral of the story is......DO not drive into IL LOL. which i do everyday to go to work so thats not gonna happen. hehehe

I haven't taken any pics since I had the 18% changed to 50%. But I can tell you that it doesn't look much darker than stock. You can see a bit of a difference, but it is still easy to see inside the car from the outside (which is what keeps the cops happy). The good thing is that 50% tint up front is much better than stock glass when it comes to heat reduction and reducing glare.

i was thinking about getting that just for my front...or maybe 40. not sure...i wanted to get something but just like CA, any tint in the front is illegal. 35 in the back.

Well I used to be really dark, but I got so much po-po attention. The way I see it now, 50% is a little bit too light but 35% is definitely too dark for the CA cops. I think something like 42% would be ideal if it existed, but my tint place only had 70%, 50%, 35%, 18%, 8% -- so I chose the fifty. I still have the 18% around the back three windows, and that kinda creates the effect of the fronts looking darker than they really are. The windshield is also 50% now, and the sunroof is 18%, so it all helps to keep the inside darker and cooler.

the rear window isnt done yet because I keep messing up. Tinting is hard lol. I did the back two windows on my first try with only a few slight imperfections and decided to leave it, but the rear and front windows came out terrible. I got the front windows on my second try because I took off the door pannels and weatherstripping which made it 100x easier but I messed up the rear again, its a real b*tch lol. I'm gonna give it a third try next weekend, wish me luck :-)

Im trying to get an idea for a tint on the windshield, any pictures? I came up with an idea of getting 5-10% all around, just debating on the windshield..any pictures to help would be appreciated. :bow: :D :D

5% on the windshield would be hard to see out of at night, I had 5% on my back window of my old car and it was hard to see to back up.

Haha yeah, I would imagine. I wouldn't go with 5% on the windshield..thats like asking to be ticketed. I was thinking maybe 35%? Just wanted to see examples. -- I may go with 10% all around then, it's just 15% seemed too light for me.

Yea I wish I didn't live in VA because i would get 5% all the way around except for the windshield. I have already been pulled over 2 times for my 20%. It would defiantly look good though have every window tinted in like 10% or 15%!

Haha yeah, I got lucky with never getting pulled for my 15% on the sides. But any VA law dealing with driving or tint is horrible haha.

Edit: I'm on a 6 month probation starting tomorrow haha, one ticket within that time period that gives me a demerit point will result in license suspension. After the 6 month period, im on a 18 month control period where if I get a ticket within that time, I will be back on 6 month probation.. so it's like 2 years of having to be ticket proof..

Oh dayum, yea then is is probably best not to get your windshield tinted. Yea, VA state cops don't like tint! I have no problem in my town or at school.

Especially mixing together Williamsburg and Colonial Parkway, Cops are all over the place. Yesterday I only saw state police..not a single county cop around haha.

Hahah yea, my area is alright. I just try to stay off 95 as much as I can.

just got my '08 tC a couple weeks ago and want to tint the windows. i live in san diego, what do you guys think the darkest i could go is without getting harassed too badly?

CA tint law is anything % on the back sides and rear windown and 70% for the front side windows. 70% means your really cant legally tint them because they highest tint shops have is 50%. You should be okay with 35% though.

I'm wishing now that I had 15% on the fronts too, everyone around has darker than me on the fronts, even my mom's Murano tinted by the dealer is darker (even though the sticker on it claims its >25% haha)

getting my windows 15% all around except windsheild on my SCM this weekend is SUNTEK windowfilm any good? thats what they use. they work on bentlys and mercedes ect ect.. so im thinkin this is a preety decent shop

Yea, just cover the tire with newspaper or put index cards between the wheel and tire.

I'm getting my red tc done tomorrow. I'm thinking 10% all around and 5% in the hatch but i'm worried about not being able to see. Can you see cars headlights at night with 5% in the hatch? I also got a prescription from the eye doctor that says i can get my side windows as dark as i want them :rolling: haha.
