View Full Version : Which oil and filter?
etsnet 04-04-2006, 02:22 AM I'm done with my free oil changes from the dealer and ready to switch to full synthetic. I'm leaning towards going with Royal Purple but not sure which one is right for me. I take my car to the track, I have intake, exhaust, and header. I plan to go turbo in the future. I want the best I can get. I see they have the regular 5w30, Racing 21, and Racing 9 (which from what I read is for 4cyl import cars). Also, do these take the normal oil filter? If not what filter should I get? Thanks!

Why 10w-30?
tjbartjr 04-09-2006, 08:44 PM Mobil 1 all the way. My old 89 Probe GT (turbocharged) had 210K miles on it, never burned a drop of oil nor leaked a drop of oil. All I and the previous (original) owner ever used was Mobil 1.
chrischoi 04-09-2006, 11:17 PM 3.50 for a filter.... goooL! do you have to pay shipping at sparks?
Kumitsu 04-09-2006, 11:28 PM which one should we use 5w30 or 10w30 ? im confused on this part as im going full syntethic soon.
5w-30 versus 10w-30, everything I've ever read says this difference is almost negligible, with some saying that the 5w-30 gives slightly better fuel economy (being slightly thinner).
The manual states to use 5w-30. My toyota dealer only carries 10w-30.
Either will work.
BionicJuic3 04-10-2006, 02:04 AM how many bottles of oil does the TC take? 4 or 5?
Batjew 04-10-2006, 02:11 AM 4, but the pan is 3.8qts.
jlaznlover 04-10-2006, 03:42 AM i use japanese trd oil filter with 10w30 royal purple. what ever fits your budget best should be your choice.
06SuperWhite_SoCal_tC 04-10-2006, 07:33 AM 4, but the pan is 3.8qts.
I was wodering this, as the tech told me it took 4.5 quarts, but they only used a little less than 4. I took it in to have them change the oil, but i brought in my own Mobile 1 5w 30 Fully Synthetic. So now i have about 1.3-4 quarts left over...LoL One bottle is unopened the other is slightly less than half full.
jiggydragon 04-10-2006, 07:45 AM anyone in the dallas texas area wanna chip in on some oil filters ( 10 pack of course) and some oil so I can do my oil change ;D
B1uEsC1uEs 04-10-2006, 03:10 PM I use royal purple and that stuff is the best (5w-30). Right now I use Fram oil filters but im gonna switch to K&N oil filters on my next oil change.
egorblack 04-10-2006, 04:03 PM I am buying filters from my dialer around $3.50, why will I go online?
hahaitzskippy 04-10-2006, 05:17 PM ok many of you are using OEM filters which is ok but i HIGHLY recommend NOT
why? better oil filters are like better air filters. lets more air through with out sacrificing suckin in BAD crap!!!
puralator oi filter is the BOTTOM of all oil filters many of you should use. why? fram is well known but many test says fram is almost the same as your OEM or stock. IMO
because there is really no point in gettin synthetic if your jus gonna use a CRAPPY oil filter.
synthetic's are meant to last at least 10k miles. but you change it out ever 5 because its DARK NASTY etc because of your CRAPY filter... it didnt do its job and got dirty to quickly.
get a better filter, the oil lasts longer and you can fully utilize your synthetic oil.
if you dont believe me go test it and find out yourself. or go ask your neighborhood autozone/kragen sales person, they should know the benefits of a better filter and better oil.
mobil 1 with OEM filter lasted me ... 2-5k miles
mobil 1 with puralator filter. lasted me 10k miles.
my frend with mobil 1 oil and mobil 1 filter went up to 15k

Frisk00Azn 04-13-2006, 04:37 PM I dont think it really matter what oils or filters you use in the beginning, but if you got like header and minor internal mods i would go for a better quality oil because the one thats used for the car when its stock burns up way too fast.
oil is oil and doese not really matter as long as you change it every 3k
hahaitzskippy 04-13-2006, 06:01 PM oil does matter to some people.
its lik the grade of gas or brand of gas. basically its all the same but why do you pick one over another? brand, additivies, and some are better for your car.
same goes with oil.
deep down inside, its true. oil is oil, but for me, its not that chance. when i switched over, i saved gas, (its proven through test), oil lasted longer, (saving me $$ on oil changes because synthetic is only $1 more than dino oil), it works better under larger stress (such as stop and go, start up turn off, high revving, etc with less burn off).
im not here to bash on DINO oil and oil filter users. im jus spreading the word out that the higher grade you go in oil, the better it is for your car.
dino isnt bad, there is better out there
BionicJuic3 04-13-2006, 08:39 PM is it bad changing from regular oil to synthtic and back to regular?
dp-_- 04-13-2006, 08:45 PM To also add in on the oil is NOT oil theory.
Many "high-end" oil producers have dyno'd cars showing gains. For example, Purple Power, Torco, etc. all claim to MAKE hp, lubricate better, etc.
All in all, it really is just oil.......just some are better than others.....just like filters if you read that article posted.
dp-_- 04-13-2006, 08:46 PM is it bad changing from regular oil to synthtic and back to regular?
Shouldn't be any issues. I had to do it when my oil cap fell off :\
It's just technically is not as good as synthetic
jbae1221 04-13-2006, 09:50 PM fram filters suck.. if you read the study and more studies.. they are held together with cardboard.. and when under pressure they fall apart.. I would not go with fram.. purelator is the one I would go with or OEM. I bought some form my dealer for 4.25 each if you buy more than 3.. if you look.. most oil filters are made by the same companies.. mobile 1 filter made by champion.. plus most filters are made the same way.. some with just different materials..
etsnet 04-13-2006, 10:03 PM I hear all the time once you go to synthetic it's not good to go back, that's why it's a big deal to some.
I also heard that when going synthetic it's good to stick to the same brand but not sure how true that is.
jbae1221 04-20-2006, 07:57 PM ok here's my problem.. I got my oil filter from my dealer and they gave me the wrong filter.. well the one that is suppose to be on there is suppose to be yzzf1 but they sold me yzzf2.. now they said they would change it out for me but i already put it on my car. it fit perfectly. only problem is that the yzzf2 filter is about an inch short.. I don't think this affects much just amount of oil i need and some filtering.. but if i'm wrong please let me know.. thanks
tCyoung1 04-23-2006, 03:18 AM I heard from a friend that Royal Purple oil was bad for street driven engines and is really only for race engines, is this true?
Batjew 04-23-2006, 04:16 AM I heard from a friend that Royal Purple oil was bad for street driven engines and is really only for race engines, is this true?if that were true it wouldn't be sold on the street.

racing oil is only benefical for engines.
if you dont have any benefit, the least it can do is give you better gas mileage
