im interested for sure. i think alot of the cali people are here do those things that "stay in vegas" so they arent online. so you should post on this again during the weekend to bring it back up on the home page. Since everyone has posted something on this (like back in june) im sure theres plenty O' interest.

how's the prototype gonna look? is the armrest gonna be built onto the seat or from the center console area?

i am really ready for the armrest...i drive over 100 miles a day.

but of course buying one will be contingent on the design, look, functionality, and cost...

so please keep us all posted as to the prototype...i think atleast 85% of all scion owners..especially xB owners are in great desire to have it.

I'd be interested in an armrest. I'd also like to see a 12v acc plug in it if possile, or some way to easily mod. it for an additional plug. if this could happen and it was at least semi-affordalbe, I'd get in line to pick mine up ..

DirtyThirty
12-18-2003, 11:44 PM
That is the one thing i hate most about the XB. No arm rest. it sucks. it is so uncomfortable plus you can't lean to the side and look coo in yo ride. My friend has a 2002 honda civic where he has a armrest on the drivers side right side. It flips up and down like the arms at the movie theater, but theres no thing to put yo bladder buster soda. Thats exactly what the scion needs.

thanks for the interest, the armrest is not far away, I have some photo, but I can't release them. Dany has been working hard for us this project. it is going to a storage compartment under the armrest, and one in the rear. I will forward the idea about a 12 plug in. the retail will be around 80.00 but when made available , I will coordinate a group buy for at a lower price. Bill Turner

here's another possibility-
originally i was wanting to see if the minifini armrest for the mini cooper would fit the xB, but minifini didn't seem too enthusiastic in helping out.
now being listed in the '04 mini catalog is an steel braced armrest. talking to the mini parts guy, he mentioned that it is a solid piece that is actually drilled down into the frame between the seats. downside, it costs $249 bucks.
i ordered one (as a gift) but will first see if it can be modded to the xB. i should get it in a week or so.

I have been activley searching for an armrest. I got the Husco model and am not pleased with the mounting method. Two brackets bolt onto the plastic center console.
Since the console seems very loose, I doubt this will provide for a stable armrest.
I do like very much their sliding design and pullout cupholder.

I have another company sending me their first for sale/proto armrest for the Scion.
They test fitted at a dealer and it was very solid...mounting to the tunnel via the seat trach bolts. I should get it be weeks end and will install it by mid May.

I'll post results and pics thereafter.

I may even explore using the sliding feature and adding it the more stable mounting design. This one tips up and out of way when needed.

tbblizzard
05-10-2004, 04:18 PM
going to pick a part today and getting an armrest off a car and going to try to mold it. the mounting to the seat bracket bolt is a good idea for stability. think i might try to incorporate that. going for the 4runner armrest since it has cup holder slide out and ashtray. mounting it to the seat brackets would actually be alot easier since i'm not for drilling holes in my console, don't want to make it look ghetto. i'll post some pics of the process when i get it going. just bought most of the supplies i'd need for fiberglassing it. i've been looking at the design of the one on ebay how it inserts into the cupholder, it isn't a bad idea but it seems like it looks a little on the cheap side like that, hopefully using a 4runners will keep it stock looking. I measured it up out of my parents 4runner and it looks like it should fit with some modification just fine. :D

tbblizzard

Hey everyone I am picking up my new xB in 2 weeks but this was my biggest complaint about it! How close is this to becoming a reality? Any chance that I could get one? I would 100% be in for it as long as it was not too expensive!

k, well i just picked up the armrest brand new for practically cheap as hell. i'll post pics of it, gots a cupholder that pops out the side and huge storage. just doesn't have cupholders for the rear like i was hoping. nice slot for the ebrake also... this armrest was meant to go into a rear slot that looks like our rear cupholders... it's too big to fit, but with some modification it should fit snug in there. i have to make a piece that will fit snug into the rear cupholder then into that little slot to the left of the ebrake sort of like the one that sells on ebay. once i get a way to mount it i will fab a fiberglass casing around it so you can't see the mounting spots... should look pretty damn stock. looks hella nice just sitting in my car. if all goes well i'll start making some kits for it. :D definately nicer than the one on ebay.

alright, check it out... keep in mind it's not done, this is just the armrest sitting in the car to give you an idea. i'm going to start making the mounting points in the car today.

Looking at the Saturn armrest, I think the one from my Saturn L200 would fit perfectly. It is similar to this one, except it does not have the thin part sticking out to the one side of the e-brake.

Nice find. I will have to see if the Saturn L200 armrest will fit.

i like that thin piece.. it's a hand rest.. plus it's got that cup holder that pops out the side. :D

well i just got done making my template with dowels for the insert... bout to fiberglass it into a solid piece and make a few corrections to it. after that i'm going to start making the adapter piece for it. should have the insert done by tomorrow. then i'll start working on the adapter then build it up and fiberglass it into a solid piece. :D

Is the mounting height going to be variable? It would be nice to custom mount it depending on our height.

alright.. anyone know where i can buy sheets of abs plastic? looking for thick stuff, 1/2" going to screw the adapter together then plastic weld it for more strength... don't want this thing to fall apart over time. was thinking of going with lexan since that's what i've been using in my dash, but it's alittle hard to work with and the thickest home depot sells is 1/4". the stuff is virtually unbreakable but abs plastic will be just as strong and i won't have to mess with it as much.

keep in mind i'm doing this to my xa.. i've read some posts that the xb is different. after i successfully finish this i'll start on the xb mount, should be alot easier since i'll already have the adapter to fit to the mount.

plans:
1. get the mount made. using the rear cupholder and side slot next to ebrake.
2. make adapter to fit around bottom of armrest and screw into mount. will use padding to keep down any vibration noises.
3. building the casing to go around the mount and adapter so it looks flush. i've made the mold of the bottom of the console already so should go fast.

alright... got the mount mold done... came out pretty nice and tight fitting... i'm building up the framework right now. should take me about a couple days since i only can work on it for a few hours a day. after i get the frame work i'll get the adapter for the armrest done. the casing will be made at the same time as the framework is being fiberglassed. turns out to be more work than i thought. i've gone through a lot of resin and glass to get just the mold going. i'll let you guys know when i get the framework done, i don't want to take any pics until it's completed.

What would be nice is an armrest with a cupholder on the end of it where you r hand goes! :)

gots it. :P

k, this is looking like it might be a one off. for me to reproduce these would be very costly and alot of work. i drafted the measurements of the rear cupholder and side slot rising up to an adapter that the armrest would sit in. i have to make some adjustments to the measurements since i took these measurements with just a ruler before I made the mold. they came out pretty damn close though. :D

i will wait till i'm completed with it before i decide on what to do. if anyone has an intrest in using these drafts to make the armrests then let me know.

i have completed the mount and the adapter so far. i'm going to bondo the adapter to make it look presentable for now and i'll take some pics of the setup. right now it is in two pieces. the mount sits in the cup holder and left slot. the adapter fits snug over the bottom of the armrest and will end up being glassed to the mount so it's a one piece deal. i'm not that great at fiberglass since i've only been recently learning and playing with it. feel i gotta give some props to the guys that do fiberglass work, it's some tough stuff to get things looking nice. i thought this was going to be simple, no wonder its taking people time to get these things out.

on a better note, if you guys are looking for a less attractive version of a mount, like the one on ebay, but more solid and "finished" looking, i can probably make these much easier if i had access to a bandsaw and some 1/2" abs plastic. i wish i could just have the mold and make some lexan putty/goop (lexan in a jar with acetone for a day) and just pour it in but it's not that easy.

let me know what you guys are looking for. maybe after i get mine completed if someone knows a company, they can just make a mold of mine and produce them.

k, here's the mount. it's being bondo'd still, ran out. gonna pick some more up tomorrow i guess.

http://img58.photobucket.com/albums/v177/tbblizzard/HPIM0727.jpg
i took pics of the mount but i don't wanna show it yet cause it looks bad with just the fiberglass. needs to be ground down and bondo'd. some of the foil gets stuck in the fiberglass also, so you'd notice some silver on the mount if i showed the pic. don't wanna look gheeeetto, lol.

anyways, theres the adapter, fits very snug into it and holds it in place nicely, it'll stay in place even if it's right-side up (armrest). as soon as i get the adapter finished bondo'd i'll take more pics of it.

the mount still needs some more fiberglassing to make it look complete. right now it's just casted in the shape of the cupholder and side slot so you can see the inside of it, needs to be cased up before i show it. after that i think it's just the bondo work and connecting the two together and i got an armrest that should look stock. gonna use the black wrinkle paint by plastikote, gives it that plastic look. :P

lookin like i'm on my way so far? that adapter don't look like much but that's some work right there. not nearly as much as the mount though.

anyone got an cad program i can use to do the drafting on this? or any recommendations? need something small, i don't need a cad suite or anything. just a basic program, 2d with full scope inch measurements.

just finished casing the mount with fiberglass. everything should be solid by tomorrow. just bought a gallon tub of bondo also... gonna be some major bondo-ing going on

i'll take some pics when i get everything bondo'd. fiberglass is some sick ____, got some of it on my damn tongue, don't know how, and been breathing the dust in when i was grinding last nite. ____en sick. i work on this right when i get off work, then i have to let the stuff sit to dry and usually start working on it again around 8-9pm and it's too loud to be using air tools and what not so i close the garage door and do it. turns into a dust storm in there. needa get me one of them respirators. :P

anyways, i'd say i'm 75% done. just needs some bondo work to get the outside shape correct, fill some spots and what not, then glass the two pieces together then a little more bondo work. then just finishing work after that, paint and what not.

probably be done before the end of next week.

i'll start a new thread when i get closer to getting done.

in the mean time, cad program?

tbblizzard
05-19-2004, 03:49 AM
bondo'd both pieces today. starting to actually look like something now, lol. was looking fugly as hell with the fiberglass. bondo is much easier to mold to get the shape correct. looks like about two more days of bondo and sanding to get the shapes completed then i'll be glassing the two pieces together once the elevation/level is set. gotta level it off because the cupholder slopes down towards the rear.
i'll be starting a new thread on this next time i post, since it will be near completion.

been working on this since friday the 14th... coming along nicely... only been 4 days but it's felt like forever.

I don't think you need to rip your seat up, but I do think you'll have to cut a hole or small X in the seat.

I'd say this is one of those "Done to never be undone" kinda mods. Looks like it mounts from the inside of the seat, wondering what it really mounts to.

If it works well, 128, shipped, isn't bad.

I just received an armrest for my xB from a company called Wood Company (http://woodcompanyusa.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=2159). Believe it or not, its not wooden, but a black wear resistant synthetic leather that is supposed to outlast real leather. It was easy to install, it only took 8 minutes (including time to admire my work). The armrest has a metal bracket the goes down the side of the cup holder and screws into the bottom. They even included a peice of adhesive felt to cover up the screws at the bottom. There isn't any storage space, but the armrest flips up an out of the way when not in use, and for $89 bucks the price was not bad.

Oh, and these guys actually respond to email. I emailed them with a question before I ordered, and they got right back to me. I am also looking for something to hold items in the back, like the bottle of armour all that keeps rolling around. Anyone see some kind of nets or cargo gear?

There is something to be said for the price one would pay...the TBlizzard armrest has flip up storage, flip-up cup holder, looks stock IMO and has proven to become very comfortable while blending in with the interior pretty closely. It is a non-permanent stop-gap solution until the ultimate armrest comes (padded, matching, flip-up storage with utility power built in... !) along.

I have had it for more than a few months now and the Box would feel funny without it. Nothing against the others, they all do what they say and serve the owners/creators well and honestly, anything is better than nothing no matter which you spend your cash on...

meh, some people just don't want to try, you'll never know if you can do it till you try. i never messed with fiberglass in my life until i tried to make an armrest armed with little knowledge on it. got a few tips from people here on scionlife on the steps to fiberglass/mold. pretty much now i can bust out a cast from my console in a few hours, whereas before it'd take me at least 2 days. most of your time goes into prepping/planning, like anything you do. i can post the steps i take to make my armrests if you anyones interested in trying for themselves. one thing i guarantee is that you will get to a point where you will get frustrated with it or disgusted by the way it looks and toss it. i've tossed a few myself here and there. takes some work to get it to a clean looking piece, alot of sanding and patience.

i'm pretty sure the wood armrest would be nice too, alot cheaper at that also. problem is i don't think most of these car owners are handy people or willing to try things. every since i started messing with fiberglass and bondo i've been trying to do as much as i can with it.

in my opinion i can't see how some of these companies have come out with armrests that don't even come close to matching the car or that use bare metal as a mounting technique. it's just disgusting looking. and why mount two screws into a console that already is wobbly? at least conforming to the console you minimize the movement of the armrest.

how stable are those zeta and wood company armrests (quality auto interiors)?

my top pick for an armrest excluding my own would be JJ Products... just a shame that it has no storage.

i'm pretty sure the wood armrest would be nice too, alot cheaper at that also. problem is i don't think most of these car owners are handy people or willing to try things. every since i started messing with fiberglass and bondo i've been trying to do as much as i can with it.

in my opinion i can't see how some of these companies have come out with armrests that don't even come close to matching the car or that use bare metal as a mounting technique. it's just disgusting looking. and why mount two screws into a console that already is wobbly? at least conforming to the console you minimize the movement of the armrest.

how stable are those zeta and wood company armrests (quality auto interiors)?

my top pick for an armrest excluding my own would be JJ Products... just a shame that it has no storage.

I can't speak for the others, but the Zeta armrst is probably the most stable of "all" the armrests available. That's because we anchor to the seat tracks for a rock-solid, secure mount. We do not use the cosole at all. All other armrests (excluding JJ's) use the flimsy console. As for the JJ armerst, who really wants to cut & drill into thir seats? As for storage, do you really need any more?

Thanks,

Zeta Products

oops! managed to ____ off the maker.

so it isn't the zeta that uses the console then... but still, why show bare metal? why not build up the console so it looks more factory?

i'm not trying to talk down on your armrest, i think it's good that your company was one of the first to come out with one.

always need more storage  storage and armrest are two things that should be together, i've rarely seen cars with factory armrests that don't have storage. i'm just curious, do you drive a scion? if you do, where do you put all your loose change? in the cupholders? i'm used to throwing mine in an armrest storage as i'm sure most people are. i keep my sunglasses and all kinds of stuff in mine.

Since you asked...

We used flat steel for the legs so the armrest support would be "less noticeable" when the front seats are in ther normal position. When you are in the back seat, the legs vitually disappear! You don't see a big chunk of plastic sitting there.

We didn't add storage because the rear cup holder and the bin next to the e-brake are still usable! We looked at every aspect of the design and ease of install and stability were are 2 main concerns. Hope this answers some questions.

More storage is a Good thing especially covered storage. Sure the BOX has some storage but it is all exposed to sun and prying eyes. A console with storage is a natural. Why design an armrest only when it doesn't take much to do both. I'm really surprised no one came out with one like the molded plastic one thats available for the jeep wrangler. It's cheap to produce and works great. Also the current prices on all the aftermarket ones are too high, from the ones I've seen they should be about half of what they are. The one I made does the job perfectly and looks factory! COST about $20 :P
