i know its been talked about over n over ^^^^ but never really polled.....
Magnus 05-28-2004, 02:50 PM '87 octane in all my stuff, even the air cooled biked. None of it says it requires higher octane and I will not get a performance or mileage boost using it so why waste my $$$ on gas (that is high enogh already) when I could be spending that green on my machine.

Ditto! Only time you should run it is on high compression cars, nitrous, or forced induction.
cmdxb 05-28-2004, 03:21 PM isnt 87 what the manual says?
i know my q45 says use PREMIUM ...ON THE GAS DOOR!!!...lol WTF? 8)
BlueScionXB 05-28-2004, 03:21 PM Rockin 87 all the way...

ditto. why spend $ to get nothing in return..........
ditto here, freaking gas was at 2.25 for 87 where I am at. maybe once a month I hit up a chevron and fill it with 91. Thats only on a good day in a month!
ScionMikey04 05-28-2004, 05:07 PM I also use only 87 octane preferably from Chevron because it has Techron in it which is good for the fuel injector's.Gas price's here are between 1.91 to 1.95 for regular unleaded.

ScionMikey04 Let's just all try and get along and live in peace.
TheScionicMan 05-28-2004, 06:17 PM Running higher octane in a car that can't utilize it also contributes to air pollution and smog...

You ain't kiddin' about the Techron. Did you know its essentially the same stuff as Yamaha REQUIRES you to add to all their outboard engines to prevent carbon build-up on the rings?
don't have mine yet but I'll be burning 89 ethenol blend, cause in Iowa its state subsidized(sp?) so its normally 2-3 cents cheaper than 87 plus since it has corn alchohol in it it helps the Iowa economy, and it burns cleaner. been using it in every vehical I've owned from my 79 320i to our current 04 Matrix and always seen better milage and fewer fuel related problems.
MIKE_DEGUZMAN 05-28-2004, 09:54 PM im usin 93 octane. i really dont know why to tell you the honest truth. i guess im just used to it. my bmw n xterra ran better w/ 93. or... maybe it was just my imagination... who knows... but i use 93.
JDMxB 05-28-2004, 09:59 PM 87
satanisanerd734 05-29-2004, 07:52 PM well since gass in South fl is $2.10 i gots to use 87.. but if it ever drops back down.. mayb i can afford 93.
nosSER 05-30-2004, 10:02 AM you guys lucky 87 where i'm at is $2.25 but i have been putting 91 @ $2.55 I dont know why I guess i'm used to it too having an n20 car.
DeanCouchey 05-30-2004, 03:31 PM 87 for us, costs 2.13 a gallon at the cheapest spot. Exxon and Mobile are at about 2.20 or so
claffeyb 06-28-2004, 01:09 PM In the old days, you could use higher octane to compensate for pinging, but not with the computer-controlled systems these days. Higher octane gas is slower burning, and since your car's computer does not know what octane you put in it, it leaves more deposits if you use higher octane, More deposits means that eventually you will have an engine with higher compression, which means that then you have to use the higher octane gas to keep it from pinging. Does not make sense to fall for marketing hype of the oil companies. But, I do concur that Chevron with Techron is the gas to use because it helps control deposits. Alternately, use the Techron additive to keep the deposits down or use BG-44K once a year.
Whie I'm on this subject, many don't realize that fuel additives that claim to reduce deposits on valves and injectors do their job when the engine is turned off. The fuel with the additive sits on the deposits and softens them, which allows them to be "blown off"/disolved when the engine is started up again. It does not make sense to add the additive and then drive 300 miles on that tank. You won't be getting any benefit.
Lastly, if you get the additive in a combination with claims to remove water from fuel, that basically is done with isopropyl alcohol. If you want to remove water that gets in your tank due to condensation (yes, it happens all the time), get a bottle of the water remover that has ispropyl alchohol, not methanol alchohol. Don't get a diluted deposit remover product with it added, as it won't do either job as well as either individually.

Ditto
dinkjs 06-28-2004, 03:22 PM I use 89 octane....but for long trips like when I go to see my father in Ohio I use 93 for better gas mileage
NHGrafx 06-29-2004, 05:15 AM I just use plain regular unleaded. It costs anywhere from 1.50 to 1.90 a gallon here depending on where you go.
wyldkard 06-29-2004, 04:25 PM don't have mine yet but I'll be burning 89 ethenol blend, cause in Iowa its state subsidized(sp?) so its normally 2-3 cents cheaper than 87.
I noticed that when I was in Iowa a few months ago...every station, gas was $1.76 for PREMIUM and $1.79 for REGULAR. It was the craziest thing I had ever seen.
I use 87...I'm ashamed to say the price it is in the town I live in...even the Texas people are going to hate me. Most stations are $1.89-$1.93...however, the Shell station is $1.70, maybe less today...they've been competing with the surrounding towns(beer store towns).

MCHolmz 08-02-2004, 07:38 PM I'm using 93 and getting about 36 mpg, @ about 30% highway. 93 runs about $1.80 here.
dont_hate_the_box 08-02-2004, 10:57 PM i be using 87 octane in me box cause its cheaper and i think thats whut they recommend to burn in them little 1.5 litre 4 bangers. plus i use it in my 73 suzuki gt750. ah its a nice bike and very rare, 2 stroke 3 cylinder. 8)
fireballfish 08-05-2004, 11:11 PM I use regular 87 what ever is the cheapest. For those of you who use "snake oil" (i.e. fuel additives that say they'll clean deposits whether in the combustion chamber or in the fuel injectors) I would recomend a FULL tank of Super (93 if you can get it) prior to treating the gas. I personally dont use any of the products as all petrol contains additives whether you go to a ma' and pops station or a Texaco. The only additive you need or should ever use is "Lead Substitute" if you have an older car that ran "leaded" petrol. As for those of you that run higher than 87, as stated before, you are actually contributing to MORE polution by running a higher octane rating than required. Don't believe me, get your car emissions tested, one with 87, one with 93... the results will suprise you.
