Default Mufflers

While waiting for my xB to come in, I ordered many mods. One that I considered was a muffler with some sound. I had only heard a stock xB during the demo drive, and never heard one with an aftermarket muffler, but I wanted a little sound. I almost ordered a Precision muffler because it was said to be the quietest, and their web page said the design went very quiet for a few mph either side of 65 mph.

After driving my MT xB for 1,500 miles, I do not feel the need for another muffler. The stock muffler is not silent, but has a constant sound that is muted and pleasant, from start up, to idle, in acceleration through the gears and at cruise.

The xB is not powerful or fast enough to warrant a loud muffler. I would not want a muffler that gave people a false expectation about the car, or that influenced my driving to try to live up to that expectation. I also read DYIs about people adding soundproofing to the insides of their xBs to reduce the sound of their aftermarket mufflers.

For those who have not received their car yet, and are contemplating a different muffler, I would recommend waiting until they have driven their car awhile. If they decide to keep their stock exhaust, I do recommend replacing the stock chrome cover with the double-walled Valor stainless cover, because it provides a more visible, substantial and tasteful termination.
