Smoking lights?? Wouldn't smoking full flavor or menthol have the same resrictions??
Seriously though, if you use the static cling tint it can easily be removed and perhaps avoid a ticket if in fact they are illegal.

im not quite familiar with the Tri-State area enforcement laws, but down here in San Diego, California, i know that its usually a $10 dollar fix it ticket

right now, im proudly rocking Smoked Taillight Overlays.. courtesty of http://www.BLUEBATMOBILE.com
:D :D :D

i've asked around extensively if anyone has gotten to any legal problems prior to getting mine, and i havent heard any complaints.

if anything the vinyl overlays dont block out reflectors less than 300 feet away (california law i think) so i believe i am still safe from the law

and if anything else, theyre removable.

for any further questions, send a PM to BlueBatmobile or email him at doubleA@peoplepc.com he'll be more than happy to help you out

The reflectors with my Overlays can be seen from 30ft back. I've never had a problem with mine, and I've heard of only 1 person that got pulled over a few years back, but he simply peeled the suckers off  . BTW, my email is :

My understanding of the law are anytime you modify the lights its usually illegal. But I have bluebatmobil overlays too. I have never had a problem. I've had cops follow me at day and night and never been pulled over.

So long as your car is not registered in those states, you are exempt from their specific rules and regulations. I work for NJMVC and we have no jurisdiction over cars with tint, lenses, etc. in our state that are registered outside of NJ.

i just have one thing to say, the jetta taillights on teh wolfsburg edition and the trek edition all had the smoked taillights. also not to mention the vr6 models. so how will smoking our tails be any different?

There are also a few new SUVs with smoked taillights. I was a little hesitant to do my car until I noticed about 5-10 percent of the cars in my area seem to have smoked tails. (Baltimore/DC)

Because the Jetta taillights were designed and _certified_ to put out the proper amount of light in their originally smoked condition.

Your aftermarket smoked taillights aren't.

That's all the cops look for, whether the lenses have DOT stamps or not, and whether the lenses have been modified from their certified configuration.

That being said, I have had non-DOT brazilian taillight lenses on my VW for years without ever getting a look from the cops. The DOT lenses are hard to find and very expensive and the brasilian lenses are only a few bucks each. The cops don't notice because the lenses look and act like the originals.

If you put smoked overlays on your lenses that noticably cut the light output or impair the reflectors, you will get the attention of the cops, and rightly so.

Just for your info, in CA, the law is that the rear tail lights (when lit) must be visible from at least 500 feet back.

FROM CA DMV WEBSITE.

24600. During darkness every motor vehicle which is not in combination with any other vehicle and every vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles shall be equipped with lighted taillamps mounted on the rear as follows:

(a) Every vehicle shall be equipped with one or more taillamps.

(b) Every vehicle, other than a motorcycle, manufactured and first registered on or after January 1, 1958, shall be equipped with not less than two taillamps, except that trailers and semitrailers manufactured after July 23, 1973, which are less than 30 inches wide, may be equipped with one taillamp which shall be mounted at or near the vertical centerline of the vehicles. If a vehicle is equipped with two taillamps, they shall be mounted as specified in subdivision (d).

(c) Every vehicle or vehicle at the end of a combination of vehicles, subject to subdivision (a) of Section 22406 shall be equipped with not less than two taillamps.

(d) When two taillamps are required, at least one shall be mounted at the left and one at the right side respectively at the same level.

(e) Taillamps shall be red in color and shall be plainly visible from all distances within 500 feet to the rear except that taillamps on vehicles manufactured after January 1, 1969, shall be plainly visible from all distances within 1,000 feet to the rear.

(f) Taillamps on vehicles manufactured on or after January 1, 1969, shall be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than 72 inches, except that a tow truck, in addition to being equipped with the required taillamps, may also be equipped with two taillamps which may be mounted not lower than 15 inches nor higher than the maximum allowable vehicle height and as far forward as the rearmost portion of the driver's seat in the rearmost position. The additional taillamps on a tow truck shall be lighted whenever the headlamps are lighted.
