View Full Version : Slept inside your Xb?
neneago 06-02-2004, 08:36 AM I was looking at this pic below and was amazed. Has anyone actually lied down inside while all the seats were down? How tall are you? Comfortable?

quadoptix 06-02-2004, 08:57 AM im 6 feet tall and ive done that before i put my box in...now i just sleep lengthwise...i can fit no prob...6 feet 210 lbs
neneago 06-02-2004, 11:21 AM How much more room do you have? I'm 6'2"
AKgoalie7 06-02-2004, 11:26 AM I haven't yet 'christened' my car... but there is sure plenty of room for that...
;)
nolanneuner 06-02-2004, 12:03 PM i gonna try laying down the seats and putting an air matress in.
neneago 06-02-2004, 12:15 PM Can someone take some measuremnts to see what size of air matress one can fit in there. I'm thinking that twin size might fit.
neneago 06-02-2004, 12:22 PM I found this matress on ebay. it comes with a 12v electric pump. The measurements are 72"x30"x5"

I'm 6'5" and i have slept in my car TONS. I just put the back seats down and curl up... two pillows a blanket and your set.
scionracerxb 06-02-2004, 06:29 PM I'm 6'5" and i have slept in my car TONS. I just put the back seats down and curl up... two pillows a blanket and your set.
curl up is right. I tried to lay down back there, and it just didn't work. i'm way too tall. I havent tried to lay the front seats flat like in the picture tho.
I'm 6'0" and I've slept inside my WRX many times, can't wait to get the Scion and sleep in it, with my gf, lol,
xboxPS2 06-02-2004, 06:59 PM I haven't yet 'christened' my car... but there is sure plenty of room for that...
;)
be careful every time i've christened a car, it broke down within a week after...usually not major stuff but the first time, the timing belt went, put valves into pistons they were soo deep that it almost went through....again i warn you...

yeh that usually leads to bad things
metalbox 06-02-2004, 07:33 PM I'm 6'4" and I've put all the seats down and slept it my XB, but it's not very comfortable. I would be more comfortable with an air mattress, but won't be very flat. I have also laid in the back seat "curled up" and that sucked! No way I will ever do that again. If you find an air mattress that will fit, can you give me the brand and model#. Thanks.

it should cause thats like 2 more feet or maybe 3 more...
thats awesome though I wonder if it will work with the tC cause I'm around 6'3".
neneago 06-02-2004, 07:42 PM I will be able to get a mattress once somebody post some measurements of where the matress will fit. Somebody get up....walk to their Xb and take some measurements. :) I would if I had an Xb. Soon I will.

Dude, looks like you need to go a little easier on the "christening". You only need to bust one thing... and it isn't car related!
wickedxb04 06-02-2004, 11:15 PM Dude, looks like you need to go a little easier on the "christening". You only need to bust one thing... and it isn't car related i second that.
i've went on a road trip with my girl and alls we needed were 2 pillows and 2 sleeping bags...one to lay on and the other for over top of us. needless to say, we "christend" my box...only prob is she can't be on top cause she hit her head  ...oh well
metalbox 06-02-2004, 11:30 PM Here are some specs:
Width above wheel wells : 49.5"
Width between wheel wells : 38"
Lenth from steering wheel to back door : 81"
Lenth from dash to the back door : 89"
Lenth from stick to the back door : 84"
Hope this helps you out.
neneago 06-03-2004, 08:32 AM I went on ebay and most air mattresses are 39" wide. :D They don't want us to have fun in the box. The only one that I found that would be perfect and it has a 12v lighter connection pump. Meausres 72"x30" Can anyone find something better?
http://prod.bsis.bellsouth.net/coDataImages/p/Groups/143/143190/folders/94006/662581biams72[1].jpg
neneago 06-03-2004, 08:55 AM What was I thinking?? It's an inflateable mattress. we should be able to squeeze in the one that's 39" I just placed a bid on ebay. 8)
vanhate 06-03-2004, 09:26 AM What was I thinking?? It's an inflateable mattress. we should be able to squeeze in the one that's 39" I just placed a bid on ebay. 8)
You may want to check out www.campmor.com. I've done tons of camping/backpacking over the years and they always seem to have the best prices. If you're looking for inexpensive, they have one that is 74 in. x 39 in. x 5 in. for only13.97. Looks like that's the standard size for a twin air mattress. Double is the next size up and you get killed on the width of those with them being 54". Of course someone could always fab a custom one.
neneago 06-03-2004, 10:05 AM vanhate....That's the same price they have on ebay. The one on ebay includes the electric pump. Inflates the mattress in less than a minute. :D
MotoMan_YZ400 06-04-2004, 06:00 PM Slept and christened? Well i've done both. Slept, i was in the parking lot of myt work (hey i had a long night and it's almost 2 hour commute, so sleeping there sounded like the better idea, plus i was partying in that area anyways) All i did is flip the driver seat back.... yeah it sucked. The back part of the front seats, when folded flat with the bottom part of the seat, leaves a large hump, very uncomfertible. Now as for chrisening, well it was done in the back seat, not folded down, but the front seats were pulled and folded all the way to the dash. Man you could have an orgy back there with that much room! :P
cmanworkz 06-05-2004, 09:02 PM ive never slept in my xB, but ive doen a lot of stuff in there....
2tone_xB 06-27-2004, 12:30 AM Waited for my girlfriend to get out of work a few times. I'm 5'4" ( yeah yeah I know) When I try to sleep in the xB, I push the driver seat and back rest all the way back. Rest my body there and rest my legs on the passenger side seat.
Don't know if that makes sense but I guess it was comfy. I slept probably for 1 hour straight without a prob...
TokyoRaver 06-27-2004, 12:43 AM I just throw down four O.E.'s
after that, I can sleep comfortably on the asphalt under the car for a couple of days.

BMarle 06-27-2004, 03:08 PM I take a 30-45min siesta Monday-Friday in my Scion :D

Being I'm going for the JDM look, I'm currently having custom tatami mats made for the inside of my xB. Also, being the rear seats don't lay completely flat a custom platform in the rear cargo area is being made to level the whole rear area and will also house the Digital Audio/Video Control Surround System. The tatami mats will be made in a way that the rear seats can still be used up or down. Pic's will be posted when completed.
By the way, are you in Japan? I'll be there very soon to buy bB parts. Maybe we can hook up?
neneago 06-27-2004, 04:09 PM pm you.
ProjectFusion 06-27-2004, 04:38 PM i gonna try laying down the seats and putting an air matress in.
It has a little trouble with the width but length is ok. I had to do this 2 weeks ago.
isn't nice to know that if the wifey is madd, i can sleep in the box!!
samshaft 10-01-2004, 03:20 AM Hmmm.......thats nice to know.......cause ive about had it with my wife, and she me....at least i can live rent free until i find somewhere to live.
Ethereal_Dragon 10-01-2004, 07:18 AM I am 6'4". 225... I slept pretty comfortably in my xB. I used 1 pillow and a sleeping bag. I used another pillow to lay on between the front seat and back seat to make it more comfortable. If you have a thin sleeping pad (bed roll) or air mattress, it would be good to go.

God I had to chase that stuff when I drank it. Cheap though. As for the cristening. I'm 6' and it works sideways on the back seats. Used to use the front seats in my 626 but the fronts so so much lower on the box i found out. Oh well no cristening for a while for me (**** chics :-D)

will that fit. That is a lot more comfertable than a blow up bed that u showed or even the ones like a sport chalet. I have one and it feels really empty.

 I would like to see one of those in a xB. I would think if you did this, & went to bed. Better not have a nightmare. The moment you wake up, you will knock your self back into a hard sleep
Djbombsquad 10-02-2004, 05:55 AM well i believe you can adjest them as well and u inflate both top and bottom so just inflate the bottom like 50% or something.

It might work then. http://www.walmart.com/catalog/product.gsp?product_id=1818708 I would look more into something like that. I would first take the measure ments to make sure it would fit.
xbxxx 10-02-2004, 04:51 PM We had a piece of 4" foam custom cut for us at the local foam shop to fit into the back of our Explorer when we went camping. It worked great!! It's easy to cut to form around wheel wells and such. And it only cost about $20.

Kenneth_Brandon 12-04-2005, 03:00 PM I found the seats in the down position had a lot of ups and downs. Check out my thread on converting the xb to a one person camper.

Chimmy3 12-05-2005, 02:18 AM I slept once when it was 2am and I was so tired I couldn't drive straight. Without the gear the seats are pretty uncomfortable... I haven't tried the back yet though... I only pulled over for a quick snooze so I wouldn't kill anyone or myself.
I saw the camper conversions... pretty neat idea... might try it when I go camping...
AdioScion05 12-05-2005, 02:24 AM Went to SPI durin spring break and it slept 4 guys plus some luggage...was'nt to bad...
hotbox05 12-05-2005, 02:37 AM i've "slept" in the back of the xb in more ways than 1. lol. never put the front seats down. and with the seats all flat like the pic you NEED a matt to be comfy and i do not lug a matt around. that and my rear strut bar complicates things. as well as my soon to be had front harness bar. still ave a trunk tho!
HOpeNEverFAdes 12-05-2005, 02:57 AM its pretty darn comfy, for a car @ least.
mile_hi_sci 12-05-2005, 03:16 AM i have had to sleep in my box, ita almost bigger than my bed!!!!
cierrecart 12-05-2005, 09:00 PM A better idea would be to go to a fabric or craft store and buy a sheet of upholstery foam and cut it to fit. That would be WAY more comfortable than an air mattress.
Rider 12-06-2005, 01:06 AM I'm thinking living in my XB for a complete week this summer when traveling, I'll for sure find something to be comfortable inside this big box, can't imagine having this room and not to get benefit...:)

Im 5'10"
Cueball3 12-07-2005, 04:40 PM Haven't tried it yet, but I slept in the front seat of a '97 Ford Ranger while traveling the country for several months. So, my XB should be a 'lay' in the park. :)
crayonBOX 12-07-2005, 04:59 PM wow. this is a 04 thread....

would post a pic ..however am sitting in Louisvile,ky with an oversize load... just waiting out the weekend curfew...
Kanotoa 07-16-2006, 03:42 AM I gotta go camping with my son one day.
nightDenizen 09-11-2006, 11:25 PM This last weekend, went camping for a night with the wife and kids. Talked the wife into trying the xB for our sleeping.
About 10 years ago I picked up a 48" wide air mattress (have no idea where, and can't find them online now). I inflated it enough so that if I sat on it, I sank all the way down.
Put the bench down, removed headrests and put the front seats down. Laid the air mattress inside. It was up on top of the wheel wells, but it just bent around them when you got on it. If you tried, you could just squeeze your hand down between the door and the mattress. The nice thing about having it slightly soft, is that it compensated for the bumps in the front seats (and where they met the back bench) wonderfully. We slept with our heads toward the front of the car.
I'm 6', and my wife and I are both pushing 250 lbs. We slept there for half a night comfortably with our 18 month old between us. It was pretty nice - would have been perfect without the baby. Then the 3 year old woke up in the tent, and we had to squeeze him in as well. Not nearly so comfy. The worst 3 hours of sleep I've had (well, can probably only count 1 hour of it as sleep) in a long time.
I think the ideal setup would be to have one 48" mattress pumped up kinda soft, topped by another pumped up as hard as you could get it. The bottom would compensate for the uneven surface, while the top would give you firmness. Since they are only like 6" high, you'd still have plent of headroom.
TehJCY 09-12-2006, 01:36 PM I did it one bad night during my caming trip a few weeks ago. Heavy rain storm flooded my tent. Ended up curling up in the back amongst the camping supplies. Ouch!
xBster 09-12-2006, 05:54 PM I took mine to the drive-in and folded all the seats down, added a few blankets and pillows, it was great.
xbxxx 11-02-2006, 04:08 PM I'm probably the only one taking advantage of this in my xB.
Ryan
I've been sleeping in my Xb on trips out to Johnson Valley for over a year now. I tow my quad with a Curt hitch and Harbor Freight trailer. Then I set up my little "cave" with an air mattress or down pillow- top (or a futon pad works great too!) and a couple of comforters. I have everything I need in there. I've got tint all the way around and dvd's to watch. If it gets a little hot after a ride I run the air for a bit and relax. If it gets a little too cold at night I run the heater for a bit. The motor's so quiet people don't even know I'm in there.
badbasic 11-02-2006, 04:25 PM my son and i camped out the nite b4 the bounty hunter conclusion. we drove 11 hrs and just slept in the box since we didnt get to ny @ 1 am. a little uncomfortable, but we were so tired it didnt matter.
I went to Gallaudet University a few weeks ago and I slept in my box for 2 nights in row. Not great, not bad but definitely better than sleeping on a couch.
Stealth97 11-02-2006, 09:18 PM I sleep in mine almost every day. I work 10pm-6am, and totaled my last car because I was so tired. I refuse to risk that again, ever.
jwaj2002 11-02-2006, 11:09 PM I sleep in mine 4 days a week, for about an hour monday through thursday, I just lay the passenger seat back and go to sleep, I've camped that way before, I'm about 5'6
13edge 11-03-2006, 01:04 AM If sound gets out the soundproofing as easy as it gets in, my snoring would probably wake up the forest.
Radiodude 11-03-2006, 01:30 AM Most definitly have I "enjoyed" someone in my box.
3 words... girl on top. :lalala:
Nuff said.
rallying_the_scion 11-04-2006, 11:07 AM for a year i slept in mine for 2 hours a day, 5 days a week, and ill admit, i slept great, im 6 foot 2 inchs, laid down the front seat all the way back used my jacket as a pillow, and out like a rock, of course, that was after a 2 hour drive, lol, at 3am.
xB4sale 11-04-2006, 04:23 PM Only slept in mine while driving from Alaska to NC. Car was packed to the max and all I had was the driver's seat. Not a comfortable rest, but when making 20 hour days on the road, any place to shut your eyes is just fine. Made the 5800 mile trip in 90 hours....no hotel, no stopping.
rallying_the_scion 11-04-2006, 09:04 PM dang, i made the trip from southeast texas to alaska in 9 days!!!! but i had to stop every 500 miles USAF regs at that time, im gonna try to make it alot faster later in the years
xB4sale 11-06-2006, 02:43 AM Stopping every 500 miles.... that would drive me nuts! I'll admit, I never kept to the 100kph posted through Canada. When the signs said "Speed 100" I ignored the kph and assumed mph instead. Couldn't keep 100 mph through mountains, but hit 105 a few times. Averaged 37 mpg even at those speeds. On a long haul like that, it all turns out to be a blur anyways, so a 4 hour nap each day is about good enough....comfortable or not.
rallying_the_scion 11-06-2006, 02:55 AM i got 37 MPG to, pullin a trailor, 800LBS. i might have to make the run that way when im goin back to the lower 48 later in the year, cant wait!!
xB4sale 11-06-2006, 11:04 AM Sorry to hear about your recent snowfall up there. It's about that time for hibernation in AK, I'm sure.
Gothbox 11-06-2006, 11:14 PM I sleep in mine almost every day. I work 10pm-6am, and totaled my last car because I was so tired. I refuse to risk that again, ever.
the same for me, I don't work those hours anymore, but I did the same, i prob slept more in the box than at home.
cmpfuel 11-15-2006, 03:55 AM Firstly, I discovered that a 39 " mattress, AKA a twin, does fit perfectly, as apparently they measure the 39" when the mattress is deflated. I car camped in it last night, and it was pretty comfy, except for the coldness, but that was entirely my fault as I neglected sheets or blankets.
Also the other pic shows a custom made collapsible awning I created, which doesn't uyse stakes or anything, just rope, tent poles, and tension. It worked pretty well, although it might not look too pretty ; ).
And the pallets were there for kicks, and boy did we get strange looks. We camped in a Walmart lot, since they alow RVs to stay overnite, we just told them we were an RV and had a free nights stay.
Also you can see the canoe pic, I got even more funny looks for that. The canoe is an 18 footer, and as you all probly know the toasters only 13 or so.
Peace

xbxxx 11-15-2006, 10:36 PM Yep. Camp free at Wal-Mart. Always an option in a pinch!
Robot_Box 12-02-2006, 07:31 AM yeah and it sucks...i think....we take my box fishing a lot and sometimes end up sleeping out there...maybe cause it smells like crap with the dead fishes in it....but sleeping in cars period sucks
Sweatstance 12-02-2006, 06:49 PM i slept in mine and its wasnt too comfortable. im 6 feet 2 but i had no pillows or covers
MissMurder 12-02-2006, 06:58 PM on average, i sleep in mine about 3-4 times a week. i'm in college and i commute so instead of driving home between classes, i usually take a nap in the back seat, without anything folded down. i'm 5'6" and can almost fit on the bench without a problem....my feet hang off unless i curl up.....but i'm comfortable!!
lil_blue_star 12-02-2006, 09:36 PM Slept in the car at NOPI after she got judged. lol. Spent the entire night before heading to ATL on detailing, left Shaw at Oh-God-Thirty *or would've if everyone else hadn't overslept* and drove non-stop except for gas before we got there. Once 8 or 9 at night hit, I was done. Leaned my seat back far enough to not disturb the back display and crashed until my team woke me up to go to the hotel. :D
jwaj2002 12-02-2006, 11:13 PM lol I sleep in mine every day its more comfortable then my bed and I just wad up the jacket I keep in there and crash, passenger seat leaned back about 2/3rds of the way and the stereo on
Daewootech 12-03-2006, 08:16 AM Im about 5-9 and ive taken my xb camping twice, once with my subwoofer box in it. all the seats lay down enough for two people to stretch out fine, the seats arnet exactly soft, but not too bad, the part that kills a bit are those plastic parts where the car seats clip into. also if your thinking of throwing a full size matress, think twice about the wheel wells, theyre a bit lumpy on the ends. otherwise, throw a few blankents down and youll be nice. throw the heater on for a while, then sleep comfy all night
bobthis 12-06-2006, 11:22 AM I slept on my backseat before and it was very comfortable. Might I add that I was completly trashed at the time though!
Daewootech 12-07-2006, 05:19 AM Oh yeah, on a different not, sleeping in the front seat, not comfortable, the steering wheel is very restrictive, and the seat has a bit too much lumbar support for it to lay down nice.
hotbox05 12-07-2006, 08:15 AM i'm gonna do it tonight. damn me and my incessant need to buy more wii's so i can sell them.
prescottn 03-26-2008, 05:50 AM Drove from Rancho Cordova CA to Norfolk VA in 3 days stopped to sleep twice for 6 hours each time... I am 6'7''. After spending 6 years in the Navy though you can sleep anywhere.
boostedbox06 03-26-2008, 07:29 AM with a beautiful female last night! Is there a better way? haha
Sciondreams 03-26-2008, 02:25 PM Oh the tales. When I first got mine I partied a lot! So with the hour and a helf commute to work Id sleep in my car in the Advance Auto Parts parking lot. Ive slept in the front seats, ok for a cat nap. Done the legs sprawled over into the passenger seat.... a little better. Ive slept in the back seat, curled up for a few hours a couple times. Camped in the back (seats down) with it backed up to a camp fire numerous times. The baby strap thingys kinda hurt but thick blankets take care of that. Went out west for a few weeks and camped in the front and the back with my boyfriend. And the greatest of all.... Roswell New Mexico, pitched a tent in the walmart parking lot right next to the xB and took the fly and strapped it the the back door for a place the change. To deal with the people peeking into the car when you sleep, 4 saraungs (spelling), the things girls use for wraps in swimming suits. Lay one over the visors. Tie two to the handles. and hook them over the gas shocks on the back door. Other options, Sew them up with magnets in them and make a little room in the back with the hatch open. Or for shows, Get netting and some small magnets and hang it up around the back hatch and crawl inside :D
fusionscion 03-26-2008, 02:28 PM I haven't yet 'christened' my car... but there is sure plenty of room for that...

Haven't slept in the box yet, I'm sure I will.. planning a roadtrip to Minneapolis and Chicago this summer. :P
TheScionicMan 03-26-2008, 06:22 PM I've done the "Camper Special" setup for a few shows. It's something different and a great place to nap during a long car show:
