I heard that smoking out your tail lights were illegal. Is this true?

Yeah, they are illegal. But eveything you modify on a car is illegal; intake, exhaust, vynl graphics blocking view, front tv, etc.

if you don't them too dark, you should be ok.

i've had mine for about a month and have had no problems...

same here.. fortunately, our smoked lights arent super dark

I think he must mean the intake types that DON'T have CARB approval...same for the exhaust...plus most are WAY TOO LOUD!

I've yet to have any problems with mine, and I've had them on for over a year now.

Technically, ne mods done to your car after purchase are illegal.
Stupid laws, but they overlook the little things.
Too many ppl would be getting pulled over, and the import scene wouldn't be wut it is today and the Scion probably wouldn't exist. but thank god it does

BUT i do know it varies from state to state.. AND
GTS autostlyling.. they sell like all kinds of snap on
covers for headlights and taillights.. most are street legal!

i have bat's smoked tails on my ride and haven't ever had a problem i love them and would recommend them to anybody. if you are worried though he has red overlays for our car too.

they are illegal but you can argue the point. just like the eurotailights, black out tailights are on some cars from the factory Example- Mazda RX-7 i think it is the 95-97 not sure about the year, also the 99-00 trailblazer from chevy has smoked tailights, so if the company can sell them stock with smoked tailights then they can't be illegal. because that would be discrimination . same thing with the euro tailights, mitsubishi outlander, and evo,lancer have euros stock, and mercedes come with them too. and now the clear taillights are legal beause of the scion and the prius. car companies are great, they create loop holesin the laws for us.

those vinyl overlays are cool but i see one problem. - where are the back up lights? especially with the redout. we can't have red back up lights, people will run into us thinking we are parking when we are really backing up. other than that they are cool .can you make a kit with everything red but the backuplights?

My redout kit is available without the Overlay over the backup light :wink:

If so how does it look and do u have anypics? Also...some people have said they are hard to put on and others said they were easy...anyone have any tips for installing these overlays? Thanx

i don't see why they would be illegal at all. as far as i know, light output for tailights must be red, so as long as you keep the red bulb, you're good there. light output for turn signals must be that orange color. so as long as you keep the orange bulb, you're good there. light output for backup lights must be white. so as long as you keep the clear bulb, you're good there.

umm... as far as car companies making "loop holes" that doesn't have anything to do with it. the laws have always been the same. the people that actually get tickets and can't get out of it, its because they have clear turn signals or clear stop lights. a lot of those aftermarket "altezza" and clear taillights being sold are DOT approved anyway, as long as you keep the bulbs the color they're supposed to be.

The Vinyl I use is a 6 out of 10 on darkness. It appears darker in some pics, that's just the effect it gives. Light passes through them just fine :wink: . Email me if you're interested.

ok. i gotchya.... well, i think with the paint i used, it doesn't retard light output much at all. i used smoked spray paint, and while it appears solid black when you look at it, the light can fully shine through. i know that wont hold up to a cop, or defend why i did it, but i think it looks sexy on my black sand pearl.

Yes, it woudl look quite sexy :P

If you look in my Gallery, there are pics with the lights on with the smoke Overtlay I use. Light output is affected very little.

ok here is the scoop on getting pulled over... and yes i know what i talking about .... A cop ask about your tails tell him/her thats how they came... they dont know....do you know how many cars come with euro style tails and so on... well thats if they dont use ScionLife :lol: also must cops like cars probally will ask you what it is .... oh yea dont act like a jerk then you deserve it. :twisted:

p.s. dont red out your reverse lights bad bad bad (well thats unless you dont live in a no-fault state cause it doesnt matter :( take it up with the judge)

True though. Alot of Euro cars have smoked taillights, stock.
