I will get more info on it today.

Did you get a closeup of the mounts? Are they screwed into the roof or do they mount to the "drip rails" under the rubber inserts?

I guess what I'm really asking is if there are hard points for a roof rack hidden under those rubber strips.

George <-- who needs a _real_ roof rack badly!

This answered one question. The rack is attached to the roof inboard of the rubber strips I mentioned.

I'd sure like to see the underside of the roof without the headliner in place, so that I could locate the roof structure.

I got a couple of pictures from a lady at Yakima of their rack that they are coming out with. It is a Q-tower set up and it looks like crap, the clips are like 4 inces long to reach into the door jamb. I dont have web hosting or I would put them up.

I have seen yakima racks on their track system that look realy good on an Xb. I think I am going to get that setup as soon as I get up the guts to drill into my roof

How much height does it add to the car? What brand is it? Where do I locate this rack?

Info on the RACK:

The kit cost $225.00 + Tax + shipping (if needed).

Installation cost is $75.00.

If this is a dealer installed option, I think it cost 599.00.

I haven't talked to the installation tech yet to get the details on preferred mounting points on the roof.

The rack looks almost factory...but the rack seem to be drilled onto the top of the roof...cuz u can still see the rain cutters ...it's obviously attached to the roof by either drilled bolts or adhesive...but i assume some type of drilled nuts and bolts. I just hope it doesn't rain in.

Wat's the load capacity on the rack? and will Yakima have adapters for the racks?

Yes, leakage is a concern. This rack is obviously not designed for the XB because the fore-aft bars have a curve to match the roofline of a different vehicle.

I am leery of racks not designed for the vehicle, because they probably don't pick up the "hard points" in the roof structure that a properly designed rack would. If it's just attached to sheet metal it will oil-can and look bad if the rack is loaded to capacity.

The next time that someone has their headliner out, I hope that they will take some pictures of what the under-roof structure looks like. That would be very helpful to those of us in search of a proper _usable_ rack!

what other types of problems do we need to be aware of for the racks. I understand the concern for water coming into the vehicle if the racks need holes drillled into the roof, but what other things should I be looking for? I need to get racks for my kayak and have been waiting on Yakima to put thier product out so that I may see it.

I have a Thunder Cloud Xb and would prefer a brushed stainless steel rack. Any clues where to get one???

I will be going with a removable Thule/Yakima rack. I've been using a removable Thule rack on my other car for about 7 years and have never had it scratch or mar the paint. I think the key to keeping it from messing up your paint is to remove the rack when you are not using it because dirt can get under the mounting feet of the rack and begin to scratch up the paint if the rack is left on for too long.

The advantages of a removable rack as opposed to a fixed one are:
- you don't disrupt the smooth looking roofline with roof rack rails when the rack is not in use
- You don't have to worry about leakage or rust, as you would with a fixed rack

If you want a removable rack that matches the color scheme of the thunder cloud XB, I would go with a Thule rack. Thule rack components are black and silver (non painted aluminum). Check out www.sportsrack.com , or go to a local Sports Rack store if you have one in your area. I know they are all over the place here in the bay area.

Now this is more like it. Too small, though. I want one that extends the length and width of the roof and has room enough for a decent size top box. The more I wait, the more I think I'm going to have to make my own.

This post is old so I don't know if you found your rach. But I just got one from Target that is very similar to the one pictured here. 79.99 made by Bell. I love the way it looks. Need to extend the straps though.
