xB Clutch has to be replaced 2X..PLEASE HELP, need advice!!!
I have a Xb, 2004, It has 55,000 miles. I am posting because my clutch has gone out for the second time, and was searching the internet for parts and found this website....
I initially "thought" my clutch went out 1 year ago at 18,000 miles, went to Central Florida Toyota, and they said they replaced the clutch...Total cost was $747.00, $520.00 in labor and $130 something for parts. Well, little did I know until today, they only replaced "parts"of my clutch......(I was under the impression the clutch itself was being replaced. -I was told this.)
So, here I am today. My clutch wet out on Tuesday again, or so I think..... Im at 55,000 miles now, and again unfortunately, I think the clutch went out again....I called Central Fl. Toyota after the clutch burnt up (while I was on the side of the road. )I had them quote me for the stock replacement OEM clutch @$220.00 and the TRD @ $319.00....W/ labor they said a minimum of $950.00!!!
I am at a loss for what to do, and based on other posts Ive read, there are a lot of people thta know a lot about clutches...and had had similar problems. Anybody find a loophole with Toyota? PLEASE HELP! Im being quoted $88/hour for labor and any cost for parts. I am EXTREMELY concerned though that one of the parts they didnt fix last time are bad this time around, and am paying double..... I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO....can anybody provide any insight....???
*I have a rental car now, Im paying $35.00/day. I have been offered labor at $55.00/hour in Tampa, Fl at Coutesy Scion in Tampa + parts cost.(whether it be a new replacement or just parts--OEM stock clutch) I am the sole driver of this car, I have owned a 5-speed Jeep Wrangler before my scion, so I know how to drive it. I do not ride the clutch and DO NOT race it.

My wife owns an automatic xB, so I can't speak too much on the clutch. However, there are many in here that will tell you that the xB clutch is notorious for premature wear. And the chance of Toyota covering the replacement under warranty is about zero.
If it were my clutch I would find a local clutch shop to do the work. That is all they do, and they are typically very good at it. It will likely save you quite a bit of money. And since you are replacing the clutch, why spend good money on a factory clutch that will fail again prematurely? Look into aftermarket options.
Hopefully Hotbox05 will chime in. I believe he has the Spec Stage 2+ and is very happy with it. He also changed the line to a stainless line and is very happy with that as well. You might not want a Stage 2+ though. A Stage 2 or even Stage one may be sufficient for you. Take a look at their website and see. List pricing for their clutch is also right in line with the Toyota parts as well.

My understanding was if the car gets worked on at any location other than a Toyota dealership, it will void my warranty....Is this true? I initially purchased the enxtended warranty to cover me through 6 years...

The warranty was purchased when I bough the car off the lot. I tryed the first time through this to take advantage of my warranty, but it explicitly states the clutch or any internal parts are not covered.....What would my costs be for a aftermarket clutch? and is it better to replace the thing....or just get parts fixed??? I have to be cost effective........so, I can take the car to any mechanic??
aftermarket parts wise is around 300-400
replace everything. the problem with the stock clutch setup is too weak of a pressure plate for the vehicles weight.
is your car stock? if it'
s stock or damn close to stock the clutch should last close to 100k by my calculations. if it's dying in 30k intervals someons needs to learn about clutch saving driving techniques.
and yes any mechanic . i'd def go to a local trusted transmission place.

I have a stage three SPEC clutch I'm looking to sell (selling car, I never put the clutch in). $250 plus shipping, if you want it. Stage three is pretty close to a racing clutch, so it won't go out but your knee might ;) Let me know :D

clutches are rarely warrantied or have issues
this to ME sounds kinda odd, unless you have NO IDEA how to drive, why would they only replace some parts last time, and now they want evrything replaced??
I would call Scion Customer Service and get someone involved in this
even working at a dealer, its pretty odd to me
Something is not right here
i hope it all works out
Just chiming in to also suggest going to a decent local transmission shop for the clutch work: Usually better work and MUCH better prices.
(Just off-hand it really does also sound like there is a problem with clutch technique involved with these failures, ESPECIALLY since this car is in the flatlands, not mountains. You might want to re-examine how you use the clutch.)
Also, with possibly more parts needing replacement this time, you may very well have finally toasted parts that were actually OK last time.
Good luck!

ive warrantied 1clutch in 4 1/2 years, and that was a good will warranty.

Do you have the receipt from the original work? Can you get someone to look it up on the service history? Do you ride with your left foot on the clutch pedal? Sorry to riddle you, but even I can't wear out clutches that fast. There are some reviews under the parts section on clutches. If you have to replace I would definitely upgrade.

whats it say on the receipt??
For example, if only the pressure plate is bad (excessively worn) only the pressure plate is replaced. If instead one has also now toasted the flywheel, it needs to be replaced, too.
Just because someone has damaged one part doesn't mean that everything near it needs to be replaced every time.
Let's put it another way, brake pads get replaced fairly often - they wear out. That doesn't mean one replaces the rotors, seals, or pistons every time, too...

since he was paying, might as well tell him what he needs, just kinda shady to me
But, if they replaced the pressure plate but didn't resurface teh flywheel, they're setting him up for premature wear on the new plate.. kinda like having bad rotors and not turning them when you put on new pads. Poor kid, never had a chance!
