We had a lady's Caddy towed into the shop where I worked cuz it would turn over but wouldn't start. The tech turns on the key and there's a 1 inch tall E on the digital gas gauge display...

 

R for Reserve, older cars used to have a second 1 gallon tank called the Reserve Tank, you would use from it when the main tank was empty.
