I went to Walmart to consider buying a 'Club' steering wheel lock for my new 2005 xB. They had a 'TheClub (http://www.theclub.com/default.asp)' brand lock for $37. It was ugly and junky. Then I saw a much better one (IMHO) for only $19.97.

I know steering wheel locks have limitations and don't stop the pros. I hope only to deter the joy-riders and newbie thieves. I've read many of the ScionLife threads on alarms, Lo-Jack, security systems, etc. and know about the alternatives.

They don't pick the lock...they freeze them.

Then the tumblers shatter like glass, and they close the device and drive off. No need to cut the wheel.

Dude, you can watch then do it on freakin' dateline NBC if you wanted (I saw it on the show a few years ago). It's pretty much common knowledge, and dolt can find the info with a simple search engine.

Stuff like this was on just last week. They took a criminal that grew up stealing cars and put him working with the cops testing out peoples different security devices. After they broke in the car, they would wait for the people to come out of the store, mall, whereever they were at, tell them what just happened, then get their car fixed for them.

Just cause you see it on TV still does't make it ok. That's like when they aired the first school shooting. What happened, School shootings started happening across the whole country...... My point is any security measure can be bypassed, but why make it easer and post how it can be done. I've read on other forums on how any Chrysler product can with a glow ring can be stolen in under 2 min. But do you think I'm going to brag about it on a public forum? :roll:

just so you know, the way you bypass the steering wheel locks is to take a hacksaw to teh wheel. You are through in like 20 seconds.

just a heads up, if someone wants the car, they will take the car

Because the lock is "Quad Hook" it makes it harder to cut the steering wheel, because the double hooks wrap around each xB spoke. 8)

I bought the smallest club I could find (its that yellow one that is sold on a lot of car part web sites) and I don't stick it on my steering wheel, I have an automatic and I stick it between the E-Brake and the Shift handle with the long club end going under the dash area. Now you can't put my e-brake down and you can't put my car in gear either. This makes towing difficult as well. I know this doesn't solve the freezing the lock problem but it would be harder to cut through the shifter or the e-brake handle than the steering wheel.....Just my two cents

Crooks have already developed an easy way to get past that too. The guy with the handbrake/auto shifter mini club thing sounds like he has a decent idea though. Too bad it won't work on manuals.

Nothing will stop a pro, as they use tow trucks.

Clubs will deter joyriders and amateurs. They will move on to easier pickings elsewhere.

How about a 1/4 inch cable on a spring-loaded reel behind the bumper? Pull it out, wrap it around a telephone pole, and put a hefty padlock on it. You could even include an alarm wire in the cable.

It's odd enough that a typical car thief wouldn't have a tool to cut it with, and said crook would have to do his cutting out in the open, not hidden inside the car.

I usually remove the engine and put it in my living room when I'm not using the car. I suppose someone could bring their own Xb engine and drop it in if they REALLLLLLLY wanted the car. Hmmm
