c;utch chatter
I have a 06 xB and I have noticed that I get alittle clutch chatter in first when I take off from a stop. Now it doesnt do it everytime but I noticed today that after I got on it and spun the tires and hit second and spun them then came to a stop and then took off it did it.Does the clutch get hot fast and then this happens.Any one else with this happening??
I have an 06 rs3.0 xb. I've driven a stick since I was born and am having a rough time with this clutch. On several occasions daily I get what seems like clutch chatter. It happens when starting out in first, especially with a heavy load or on an incline.
If I get the clutch out under 1500rpm's it seems to not happen. "Riding" the clutch out under load or on an incline especially over 1500 rpm's seems to make it worse.
The 30 year veteran mechanic in Toyota service (he driven Toyotas all his life) claims it's the way I'm working the clutch!!! It's annoying, but I have to give it a chance. My previous ride was an 03 Mustang GT with a mechanical clutch. The mechanic also reminded me that the clutch is NOT COVERED under the warranty. Now, I feel that if I have a clutch problem, they'll claim it's improper clutch use.
I would love to here from other owners with this problem. If there arn't a lot of us out there, it may very well be a problem with the left leg and not mechanical.
I'm curios about your age oldboxman? I'm 40 and thinking that your moniker indicates your an "older" box driver like me. So far, in my area I haven't seen anybody under about 35 driving these wagons. If you are older like me , the clutch issue may in fact be because we were raised on big, mechanically clutched high torque v8's that needed no finesse to drive

they will not cover any clutch problem with over 5k miles. hell probably anything over 1k miles.
upgrade to a stage 1 or higher clutch from act , spec , exedy , clutchmasters. much better life.

Happy mem. day to all,
I have had my clutch do the same thing a few times. I herd on SL that these clutches are no good. They like to chatter alot. I am waiting for some one to say"Hey we got a much better trany for your XB" and swap both at the same time. Oh yeah I am 31 and have driven many differnt types of vehicales, many clutches. quit frankly there is a few things my XB does that would scare me if it werent for other people here on SL saying they have the same problem.

What you have stated is exactly what my car has been doing. What I have done is take it out of traction control and it stops. So Iam thinking it has something to do with that.BTW Iam 38 so yes Iam used to different clutches.I have always driven sticks.I miss 2ND in this box quite a bit.I guess I will need more time behind the wheel.
My clutch chatters occasionally, too. It's hard for me to say it's really a problem, as I haven't even put 1000 miles on the car. Sometimes a clutch is a thing that needs to be seated to work perfectly.
I suspect the pressure plate clamping force is a little on the light side for enthusiast type driving. Yeh, sure, it's a joy in stop and go traffic, but I figure Toyota would be smart to use something just a little bit stouter to avoid issues...

they use old echo units , cars with less aggressive gearing and a lighter vehicle weight.
I just dont like the way it feels. To me it dosnt feel very tight when I shift gears. I know the feeling about missing 2nd. But I figure it is because I am not used to it. I will definetly take it out of traction control and see how that treats me.
The other day I raced my buddy and I forgot to take it out of traction controll and I got this feeling like I was getting weel hop when my tires were spinning. Then at the next light I whent to take off( not fast or any thing) and it fellt like my clutch was chatering. Well I took it out of T.C. and it stoped. Then Yesterday my buddy finnally got me to do a burny in the lot and I took it out of T.C. and what a difference it made. Night and day. So to all that is going to race definetly take it out of T.C.
I dont know if it is bad, but generally if you have some thing that is jerky in the tranny then you could potentially have problems in the futer. I would think that it would be hard on the drive train.
Mine bites too, but some times I get that chatter...just hit the traction controll buton and I dont have to worry about it. To day I was coming on the on ramp to the I 10 west and a WRX decides he whants to show off his car to his son. Of course I got whooped but I couldnt just let that go. I was going around the turn in the on ramp and all the sudden my xb quit excellerating and the rpms rocketed. My guess is that when I whent around the turn my inside wheel lost traction. So in my opinion the tracktion controller is junk. It would be nice if Detroit, E-locker, or any other brand that builds lockers would build a locker or limited slip for our xb.
thanks for teh article man. So what problem do i have? My clutch makes noise when i am in low rpms and hittin the gas? When i press the clutch pedal in the noise stops. the noise only happens when the clutch is engaged.
