just wondering how many of you people are in scion's target "generation y" age group. time to vote...

what is it with this Demographic?
When i went to Anderson Honda to check out the Element back in October 2002, the sales rep said that i was the first person in the intended Demo to be interested in the vehicle. Yet according to Honda the intended crowd is 25 and under. That puts me at the far end.
But from what i see in this poll the largest percentage are 25-32.
So what i want to know is...
WHERE THE HECK ARE ALL THE GEN-Y'ERS!?!?

Toyota is winning over a younger crowd. Yes, we could very well be the children of people who own Camrys (factually i am), but my younger sibs who are smack-dab in the middle of Gen Y have no interest in it.

Please people... tell me there are some out there, 16, 17... 20.. who want a Scion

eric_m

because we (the 25-32 age group) have money! haha. so we will be early adopters of the scions. i'm sure once they become sought after, the younger kids are going to want scions too, if they don't already. what would you rather buy with $15k, a scion or a civic?

ok, most people would say civic, but still..the scion is more original. and toyota already has a great reputation for quality, so they should sell themselves. i think scion is getting a little too "hip hop" with its marketing, but if that's what sells cars, cool. hey, i even listen to some hip hop, but when i first saw the scion magazine/catalog, i honestly thought i didn't belong in a scion because i'm not black. obviously that's retarded and i know better now, but it's funny how marketing works and how it can lure in certain potential customers, and scare away others.

I gotta tell you guys about the folks I see coming in to check out the Scions. Most of the initial interest right now is from younger folks (under 35) because they are online and find out about the Scion on the net. So, most of the people who are interested in the Scions now are enthusiasts, and thus, most want sticks! Too bad Toyota decided to send out only automatic demo vehicles to all norcal dealerships. Now, the older folks (over 35...and I've talked to a guy who was almost 70!) aren't here for the Scion per se. They usually came in to check out the Corollas, or RAV4s, etc. but end up gravitating towards the Scions once they see them and note how practical they are.

Also, since most interest right now is from enthusiasts, there is more demand for the xB, because it is very different. A standout. But I can foresee xA sales and demand surpassing the xB's once the cars are officially released, and more of the older generation start picking the xAs up because they want a very affordable, well-equipped car that gets great mileage.

Hey all,
Just thought you'd be interested in that tidbit. No, I can't remember where I saw it but it's not too surprising. It's a bit of a midlife crisis car in one sense too. It's also not that cheap. It's a "Mummy and Daddy bought it for me for graduation type of car," methinks, where the Scions are more like an "I can actually afford this thing if I don't go crazy with the accessories" thing for a Gen Y-er.
Then again, I'm an old fogy at 29. eh, what was that Sonny?

right now i am 22, but i will be 23 in august. when i went to test drive the scions there were 4 couples looking at the scions and they look like they were 35 and up. although toyota is gearing these towards the younger generations i think there will be mix of ages buying these.

Ok here's a C&P from the scionworld mailing list:

Subject: Oldest (and coolest!) Scion customers?

Woah... this experience is too strange not to share. Just talked to
a pair of Vietnamese couples that came here from Texas. They've got
to be in their mid- to late-70s, and although that *may* not seem
strange to some people (even though they are nowhere near the Scion
Gen-Y target), the really peculiar part is they WANTED 18" 5Zigen
FNO1R-C wheels in bronze! And I mean they REALLY wanted them! They
even said 17s were too small, and they wanted me to outfit an xB for
them exactly like our demo car!! Weeeiiird.

07-02-2003, 12:42 AM
Oh that's the BEST part! It was for them!!! They even knew about different tire sizes! They were checking out the 17s on our demo xA and were talking about how it was too small for their tastes. I just stood there in amazement! I especially loved it when they were talking about cruising around TX in the xB to the grocery store and go shopping. I just really didn't even know how to react! Made my day, for sure! >HAHA<

I'm 20 years old...first car was an automatic integra from my parents, second was a stick civic hatchback that I drove for awhile, hopped up and everything..and now, I am officially paying for this xB for myself! It makes me feel really good, especially when people say, "ew thats whack" I tell them, "It's ok, at least my mommy and daddy aren't ____ing out cash to buy me an IS300/A4 like you make your parents".

I take pride in being of a younger crowd, that appreciates practicality and price point at such a young age. Hopefully, toyota can continue to reach it's target market audience....they did with me!

I'm 18 and agree. I was happy that I could pay for this thing myself. It brings a lot of pride when you can do this instead of being spolied with those luxury cars that are purchased on lease. Toyota is definitely reaching their target audience in some way, and their marketing strategies are far better than that for the Element, which I was actually considering buying. But, when I saw the scion xb in thundecloud metallic and auto, I said I had to have this one!

I find the age ranges selected for the survey interesting in that they only go up to 40. There's half a lifetime after 40! :)

The target demographics of a vehicle are an interesting study. Old folks will buy a "young" vehicle, but young folks won't buy an old fogey's car.

When you get down to it, the xB is a basic, practical car. It's more akin to the VW bus than to any performance car. It just about screams "mommymobile" The accessories offered are all hang-on geegaws without significant functionality.

The xB could just as easily have been marketed to the middle or upper age groups, as there is nothing inherently "young" about the car. Toyota is a bit worries about their advancing demographics, so they made a symbolic "break" with the Scion brand to try and convince youngsters that they weren't buying a "boring old Toyota".

The Scion brochures are the only thing that make this a "youth" car. They're just about incomprehensable to anyone over 40. I've a feeling that Toyota saw Honda's failure to crack the genY market with their indifferent Eement marketing and decided to go "hard core" with the Scion. I also thing that they will probably come out with a more conventional brochure for the Olde Folkes pretty soon. The salesmen were almost apologetic when giving me the current brochures! :)

I find it humerous that the upper range is 40+, survey must have been done by a youngster that thinks 40 is old..... Hell, at 48 I'm not even middle aged yet! I plan to live past 100, laugh if you like but my grandmother died at 97 and with modern technology 100+ should be a breeze....

As far as us "old folks" and modifications go- I've been hotroding everything I own for the past 35 years, even the family minivan is modified.

Hello to you all. I am here on the East Coast where I work at a Dealership in Atlanta (Atlanta Toyota/Scion: shameless plug). I currently have a 2002 Celica GTS and looking forward to purchasing a new tC when they are released in June. Also, a quick question, if anyone knows and can help me with adding some pics of the Scions that we tricked out here at the dealership and if you know of any other Scion related websites, it would be greatly appreciated. I think it has something to do with the fact that we sort of know the inside scoop on these scions and were the first to be told about them. That plus we were trained to learn about them, hence some of us have fallen in love with the vehicles.

Ok here's MY take on the whole situation. Everyone is curious why no Gen Yers want the Scion, and there's one undisputable reason for that. What is it you ask? How about that puny lil 1.5L sittin in the engine bay? Yea sure it's cool, but no self-respecting 17-22 year old is really gonna spend 20k on a tricked out slow ___ box. I mean don't get me wrong I LOVE the Scion and I'm only 19, but Toyota screwed themselves by not putting a beefier motor in the car. Unfortunately, especially on the east coast, import tuning isn't about style, it's about speed, and here on the east coast where my dealership is, no one wants a 108hp box, they're all waiting for the tC to come out.

Hey! I'm 22 and this is my first ever "new" car. Before my Scion i was tormented with 2 crappy "at least you have a car type of cars" that my parents bought just to suffice my transportation needs, namely a '89 GOLD (yes...very ghetto fabulous) Ford Probe and a '93 Cherry Red Ford Probe. They were fun cars to beat up and drive and I have many memories with them but i'm glad they are gone and i have my SCION :) By the way mine is Indigo Ink Pearl (some crazy person who names the crayons for crayola had to have named this color) and it's so cute! I will post pics when I remember to write down the VIN haha and mine will be stock for awhile until I have the cash to upgrade it :( PM me if you have ideas for cheap upgrades!

I myself turning 32 soon, I miss the GenX bracket by a year or two, but what a different a few years make, Even thou i can afford a xA or two without problem or from his eye, i might be luckier, What he donno is i'm like most GenY are with mortage to pay, insurance (Auto, Med & life), daily house hold expense, utility, 401k, 529B, ESPP, entertainment, vehicle maintanince, operating expense... Then at the end of the day have some left over for saving then with money beside the saving available for a second car. Now who is the lucky one. I'm 24 as well, and yeah, I don't feel old per say, but being 24 feels weird. When I walked in the Subaru dealership back in october of 2002, no one took me seriously. :(

The sales woman told me she wouldn't let me test drive unless I gave a deposite to order the WRX, WTF!!! Why should I order a car that I have not driven?

Then they told me the price they were asking was $26K for a 2003.

Finally I found a place where they treated me better and sold me the car for $24K.

Now, when I walked in the Toyota dealership, and saw the Scion, the sales woman there was very nice (beautiful too) and took me seriously.

When i bought my Scion i was 18...had a little bit of credit from my cell phone and credit cards, but not enought to by an accord, or a new F150, or even a Honda CBR600RR (ill have to live with my oldie but goodie) But when i went into the scion dealership last winter, i was approached with a different side...instead of.."Ohh sorry, your not approved...guess you'll have to wait a few years to get your car" They did everything...(pulled alot of strings) SO i could get this car on my own...and it worked, i have a brand new car, and its a great feeling, plus, its also a great way to estanblish some good credit history, so that in a few years, if im still up for it, will be able to get the luxury car of my dreams.

Today I took my wife to see the xB and to test drive one. I asked her what do you think of it? Her reply: none, this cannot be good. Well after returning the xB, I asked her again. She said that the car does not look like a car, it looks like a TOY!

She did however like the tC.

With 15K I'd go for the Scion. They are going to be a economy tuning car for the future. When my Echo Hatch was stock it had about the same amount of torque as a Honda Civic SI. Oh yeah I'm 23 by the way. I'm on the generation x/y cusp.

Kenshi, take the bus...or make some friends with the kids who have cars. You live in Pembroke Pines...there's always gonna be kids whose parents bought them cars...I'm one of them (but they didn't buy me one until the end of my 2nd college year).

<RANT>I know this girl who just wouldn't stfu about how I'm spoiled because my parents bought me a car. I told her, "Maybe if you weren't a ____ing brat when you lived under their roof, just maybe they would've rewarded you with one too." Kids trying to be independent and _____ about those who aren't. Come on, you're a kid. Know your limits.

I commend those who are independent and are making the best of it. I shake my head at those who say they are independent and mope about it. They are just being attention whores. They dig their own holes and hope someone will look down into it. I know not everyone's parents are the same, but all you have to do is make the best of it.

I lived without a car until last February. I wanted a used car, but my mom wouldn't let me buy one. I could've had a Triumph TR6 (in mint condition) for 500 bucks, but no, she wouldn't let me buy it. I know my limits. I know not to defy my parents, either. Once I defy my parents, I am forced to become independent and with bitter ends. And even at 20 years old, I still don't think I'm independent. I don't bite the hand that feeds me.

Here's a story...my dad was in his last semester in college. My mom was pregnant with my older sister. My dad's parents kicked him out of the house. They took both cars away from him. He was house-hopping and even slept at the post office. He road his bike 20 miles every day to UMD. He worked at a gas station and taught at a karate school. It got to the point where he had to withdraw from his classes 6 weeks before graduating. He's in his 40s now. He still doesn't have his degree in Zoology. But you know what? He worked DAMN hard every day of his life. He even had two full time jobs when me and my older sister were small. Nowadays, I go to work with him sometimes to drive so he can sleep on the way to his accounts. One thing I've never seen or heard him do is _____ about his job. He loves his job and he loves his family even more. I remember he sold some of his favorite firearms to get me and my older sister through private school.

____, since I've been in college (note, I'm the only one of the three kids that's going to college), my mom has taken up another job. She's a supervising caterer at a private school during the day and works at Publix in the afternoon/night. She pays for my tuition(25% of it due to scholarship), books, apartment rent, groceries, car, gas, and she even has enough for a $100 monthly allowance for me. You don't know how much pressure that is for me to do good in school...</RANT>

Kenshi, you gotta realize not all these kids' parents are rich. Just because the kids are stuck up doesn't meant their parents are. I know of a lot parents who work 24/7 to keep their kids in school and pay off bills. It's what they call the American Dream...

Hi everyone...

Check out the charts next to this article, about DaimlerChrysler's
plans to roll out its own youth brand. (To see the charts, click on the link I've included.)

Scion is attracting 19.1% of Gen Y buyers (age 25 and younger), more
than any other brand. The average Scion buyer (age 40) is also
younger than the average buyer of other car brands. These figures
are from J.D. Power and Associates.

DaimlerChrysler explores brand for younger buyers

Interest signals influence of Gen Y, which is expected to buy 1 in 5
vehicles by 2010

By Brett Clanton / The Detroit News

Of the several thousand auto manufacturers who have operated in the
U.S., only three remain. But many nameplates that were once well-
known are in the family trees of those three surviving auto makers.
Read the story online In Rearview Mirror: detnews.com/history/

DaimlerChrysler AG’s Chrysler Group could launch an all-new, low-
priced brand aimed at young buyers within two to three years.

The new brand would be an entry-level spinoff of the automaker’s
Dodge or Jeep brands, Chrysler CEO Dieter Zetsche said in an
interview last week. Chrysler would likely seek a low-cost partner
to help develop and build cars and trucks for the new marque, he
said.

While Zetsche declined to provide details, a Chrysler source
familiar with the matter said the vehicles would be sold in Chrysler
Group dealerships, but marketed separately, similar to what Toyota
Motor Co.p. has done with its youth-centric Scion brand.

Chrysler has been exploring the new brand for more than a year and
likely will decide whether or not it will launch it by year’s
end,
the source said. At least three concept vehicles have been developed
for the new marque. If Chrysler decides not to create a new brand,
the vehicles could be sold under existing Chrysler Group nameplates.

Chrysler’s interest in a new brand that appeals to younger buyers
underscores the growing influence in the auto industry of Generation
Y, the 65 million Americans born between 1977 and 1994. Gen Y
consumers are expected to purchase 1 in 5 vehicles in the United
States by 2010, according to J.D. Power and Associates.

Marketing experts say the impact of Generation Y could rival or even
exceed that of baby boomers. “This is a trend Chrysler cannot
ignore,” said Michael Robinet, an automotive analyst with CSM
Worldwide in Farmington Hills.

A youth-oriented brand could introduce Chrysler to buyers who might
otherwise ignore the smallest of Detroit’s automakers. The
average
Dodge customer is 44 years old, while Jeep buyers average 43 and
Chrysler brand buyers average 50, according to J.D. Power and
Associates’ Power Information Network, which studies dealer sales
data. The average age of buyers of all vehicle brands is 46.

Pros and cons

Chrysler executives in Auburn Hills are still weighing the pros and
cons of spending millions to roll out a new brand in a U.S. auto
market already crowded with nameplates.

Zetsche said a new brand from Chrysler must be attractive to both
young buyers and other entry-level buyers the automakers’ current
brand lineup may be missing.

“(The concept) was not driven in the first place by the idea of a
youth brand,” Zetsche said, “but more of an idea of creating
an
affordable brand.”

Because young buyers are typically more sensitive to price, though,
offering vehicles with lower sticker prices could be one way to
appeal to Gen Y customers, he said. But there is still debate within
Chrysler over the best way to reach Gen Y buyers.

“Some people feel you need to have a $12,000 car, either built
domestically or imported from somewhere else,” said George
Murphy,
Chrysler’s senior vice president for global brand marketing.
“Some
people believe you’re basically served with used cars, which is
75
percent of what people under 25 buy.

“I haven’t seen much to tell me that our current brands
can’t reach
younger target audiences with the right products.”

Any new brand will not be affiliated with the Chrysler brand, which
Chrysler is trying to move upscale with premium vehicles such as the
new 300 sedan. It would be more likely a spinoff of Jeep or Dodge,
which have younger average buyers.

Chrysler is likely to seek out a joint venture partner, perhaps in a
low-cost country such as China or South Korea, to share engineering
and parts for the new brand. Because of high labor costs, it’s
often
impossible to make a profit on small, low-price vehicles produced in
the United States.

“You should look for some cooperation for execution of this
idea,”
Zetsche said, but that does not necessarily mean Japan’s
Mitsubishi
Motors Corp. and Hyundai Motor Co. in South Korea. Both companies
are partially owned by DaimlerChrysler and linked with the automaker
on several existing vehicle projects.

Zetsche said Chrysler has approached several automakers with the
idea of partnering on a low-cost car brand, but declined to name
them.

At one time, there was talk within Chrysler of giving the Plymouth
brand a more youthful cast, but that idea died with the historic
nameplate in 2001.

Toyota Scion

Toyota rolled out its youth-oriented Scion brand last year. The
compact and uniquely-designed cars start at around $16,000 and are
meant to be a test case for Toyota as it tries to discern the
preferences of up-and-coming buyers. Toyota hopes to sell 100,000
Scion vehicles in the United States in 2005 after a staggered roll
out this year.

“Toyota is breaking new ground that is likely causing most other
mainstream manufacturers to take a look at their youth
strategies,”
Robinet said.

While Ford Motor Co. has won over young buyers with its Focus sedans
and hatchbacks and General Motors Corp. has reached Gen X and Y
customers with its Saturn brand, neither has launched a nameplate
aimed squarely at those groups. Honda has also found room for the
youth-targeted Element SUV within its lineup without creating a
whole new brand.

But there are no guarantees that youth-driven brands or designs will
ultimately attract youthful drivers. Scion draws more Gen Y buyers
than any other marque — 19.1 percent of sales are to consumers 25
and under — but the average age of Scion buyers is still 40,
according to J.D. Power and Associates. And Honda’s Element has
an
average buyer age of 43.

In the end, Chrysler may decide that adding another brand is too
costly and too risky, given the already crowded landscape of vehicle
nameplates in the United States.

But if Chrysler rolls out new, low-cost cars, Dan Frost believes he
can sell them. “We don’t offer (young buyers) a car at
all,” said
Frost, president of Southfield Chrysler Jeep. “The closest we
come
is a Dodge Neon.”

Zetsche, however, is making no promises.

“Once again, I don’t exclude the possibility that we might do
that
someday,” he said. “But there’s nothing definite at this
point in
time.”

Its hard to imagine someone still saying "so there" without them snapping their fingers and waving their arm at you. Just a thought.

But anyways...just because someone's parents help them buy something doesn't mean they don't deserve to call it theirs. While under the law the car belongs to the parent (obviously, they're paying more money towards it) I know a lot of kids like myself worked hard for what their parents gave them.

My parents bought me a '91 Integra when I was 15 from an auto auction place. Not only did I bust my ___ in school and graduate near the top of my class in highschool because of it, I started working as soon as I was old enough to do so. I wanted to get a job to help pay my parents back for what they gave me, even though my mother said she'd prefer it if I just concentrated on school. It inspired me to keep on working by showing me that hard work is often rewarded.

I do disagree with richer families who tend to buy undeserving, non-working 16 year olds a brand new vehicle just because they are of driving age. If you truly haven't worked for anything, you shouldn't get anything.

I have a lot of respect for people whose parents do not give them everything they want and therefore have to get a lot of it on their own. You may be one of those people who had to work for nearly everything you own by having multiple jobs because your parents couldn't or didn't give it to you. If that is your personal case, I admire and respect you. However, I don't think that just because you were one of those people, you should harbor some ill will for people who were more fortunate. At least not those people who did work for and deserve what they got.

Now that I'm older (20) I'm still working on my education and doing better than I ever did before. Yes, my mom helps me out, but I also work more at a job that makes a lot more money than those of many of the people I still know from highschool. I was able to get my xB because of it, and my name is the one on the title. Combining my work schedule with my college classes , I seem to be busy 7 days of the week on something school or work related. Even though I feel overworked sometimes, I like to think my parents' encouraging and rewarding me gave me the determination and drive to be more than I ever thought I would be.

As far as I'm concerned I worked (and am still working) my ___ off for what I got, and whether or not my name was on the title of the vehicle, I always considered it mine.

well, to tell you the truth... around where I live, I've seen A LOT of 60+ years old pple driving the xB HAHAHAHAH they are probably not represented in this poll, coz' they dun really go online :D but yea... my neighbor told me their pastor at their church just got an xB (the couple is 70+), they are looking cool with the shades on and all.

I am 66. I have been driving a 1991 Geo Metro manual. I wanted to replace it with a later one litre Geo Metro with automatic as I have foot problems. I finally gave up and shopped for a new replacement. I wanted something similar in size and shape to the Metro. The highest gas mileage automatic that I could find with some assurance of quality was the Scion xA. Hence, an xA is on order in white, auto, side air bags. On the dealers lot there were six xA but only a black with side air bags. Surely poor planning on the part of Toyota.

At the time I was filling out the papers for an order a 60ish couple were purchasing an xB. They had been looking at smaller SUV and claimed that the xB was more roomy than the Matrix. Also just felt more open. They were quite happy with their choice. They had traveled perhaps 65 miles to find a Scion dealer.

I don't know if it's all about age, some people are just car people. I am 36 and been into car's from day one. Started with speedracer, hotwheels, drawing car's, building models, THEN THE REAL THING . I will mess with anything with wheels. I guess what i'm trying to say is there are people who buy their car, trucks, or box because it get's good gas mileage or it was a good deal. But then there are those of us who buy it because we see a blank canvas on which to perform our art. Some of us have differnt taste and ideas about what look's good or what's cool but that's what makes the world such neat place. Those who don't get it, never will.

Good points. I feel the same way. I've always loved cars, I got it from my dad. He took me and my bro to shows and races as kids, so we both grew up total car guys.

I did consider MPG when buying my xB because I have a long trek to school. But the uniqueness and 'blank canvas' thing made me pick it over something like a Civic or Corolla.

Well, I guess I fit the older than dirt category..... First car was a '63 VW beetle, 1200cc 6volt electrics. owned a lot of cars since then, but I love my xB! It's different than anything else on the road. 18" wheels, billet grill, blue cathodes... having a ball! I ride a motorcycle every day, bought the car because it's so much fun.... (have a '69 Triumph Mark III in the garage).... If I want fast, I'll take the bike. I put my vote in the highest age category, which wasn't nearly high enough...... I have 5 grandkids who think I'm the coolest gramps going!

30 here! First car was a 92 Plymouth Laser (manual), then a 94 Ford Probe, then drive that lovely 94 Subaru SVX. After a big time financial crisis, I was driving a 92 Tercel. Finally, own a tC now, which is one of the best thing that happen to me this year.

37 Here.... I drive an XB by choice not financial need. I bought it based on form an originality. I have other cars that fit other needs (see my sig). But the XB is my new fave. I also mod everything even the Volvo get IPD parts...BTW my son who is almost 4 loves it too...and he felt slighted since he could not vote :D

22/F here... First car was a 1996 Grand Prix GTP (still have but for sale), and I just put $5,500 of my own money down on my White tC. I love it! I love cars, I love Toyota's build quality and reliability and I am so happy with my decision to get a tC.
