Default Wiring Harness Help

Hey Folks,

I have a question about wiring harnesses. I've got a Kenwood DDX6019 Sitting in my house, waiting to be installed in my 2006 Scion xA. The problem is a wiring harness. I've read in various places that Circuit City no longer sells Kenwood products. I assume I need a wiring harness to connect the Kenwood Double-Din DVD player/Stereo to the Toyota wires. Is this right?

Does anybody know which specific harness I should use? Part number? I've seen various wiring harnesses that might fit the bill, but they seem to have different numbers of connections and so on. Any help you folks have would be great! I wanna get this installed ASAP.

Thanks alot in advance!

You would be correct, C.C. does not sell Kenwood equipment any more, so they will most likely not have the universal end to Kenwood plug. But your Kenwood double din should have come with a plug, then you can go to CC and buy the Metra 80-1761 and cut the universal end off and wire the two harnesses together. Just dont forget the the dash kit Metra 95-8202. while you are there.

How do I wire them together? With wiring caps, or solder?

Thanks for the quick reply.

Personally i would solder, thats all i do at work for wiring, as long as you have a soldering iron, solder and tape. That is the best way to make connections, the second choice would be crimp cap's( not wire nuts, they stink and are for home wiring) third choice would be butt connectors.

Okay, I have crimp caps. But I also have solder and tape. What kind of tape? And basically, what's the technique for soldering them? Maybe you could refer a website that has that technique? I imagine that a good solder will outlast a crimp cap, and probably also transfer a cleaner signal. Are those the benefits of solder? What about the advantages or disadvantages of crimp caps?

Sorry for the long posts. Thanks so much!

Black electrical tape( preferably 3M). Twist your wires together across each other, so you have made one wire( if that make sense), aplly the heat from the soldering iron from the bottom, wire will heat and apply solder to the wire until it creates a nice shiny coat on the wire(not dull, dull is bad and can mean a cold solder joint), tape all connections, it really is easy just takes a few wires to get use to it. Soldering makes a better and stronger connection, crimp caps and butt connectors can pull off real easy and may not make good connections. Hope this helps.

Go to radio shack and get heat shrink tubing.

It is as EZ as tape, but will not get gooey and sticky over time with heat. Just cut a short piece and put it over the wire (away from the solder joint!) before soldering. Slide it over the finished joint and heat lightly-with a match, lighter or even the barrel of the soldering iron- to shrink over the finished joint. Much cleaner.

When you say cut the universal end off, exactly which end is that? The Metra end that connects to the ddx??

So Im guessing this is the one. http://www.circuitcity.com/rpsm/oid/...wToGetItTab.do

One end connects to the toyota harness and the other end gets cut off and spliced to the... err? This doesn't just snap together on both sides?

The clear end(universal end) gets cut off, which is on the right hand side in the pic below. CC does not stock a Kenwood plug anymore so you can just click the 2 harness together. So after you cut the clear end off you would then take your Kenwood harness that came with the radio and match the colors up and connect some how( solder, crimp caps, etc..).
