xB Manual or Automatic
Seen the xB at the Auto Show here in Detroit, Fell in love with it. Test drove a few and really wanted to get a manual trans. I love the manual but don't understand why there is such a large differance in final gear ratio between the M & A tranmissions?
I plan on keeping the car a long time, want good MPG and the area freeways can go 80 MPH here. Seems like the motor is really screeming at this speed. Will the MPG suffer at this speed more so with the manual than the automatic? How about engine life?
Maybe this is more normal for these smaller engines? Seem really high to me.
Thx

normal.
Toyota has the best engineers in the world. Their cars last forever and that isn't an accident.
If you live in a big city, the auto is will costs less to own. No clutch to replace.
If you don't, the manual will be more fun.
good luck

I drive a manual xB and i love it. I drove two automatic cars in the past ( honda accord and an eagle talon) and i now wish they were a manual. i say go with a manual if u do relative long driving, but if u drive in areas with stoplights around every corner, i say go w/ the auto.
personally i had a VW GTI manual
and my dad always wanted to drive it but he hated stick
now that im getting an Xb i decided to get it auto
just to see him ride around in it with the 18s
should be good
my thoughts

Going 80mph in an xB is gonna burn alot of gas regardless of the transmission type. 4 cylander engines are always kinda loud at any speeds, because they have to work alot harder.
The question is really what do you like. Personally I like a manual over an auto, regardless of car type, traffic, or whatever. I drive in traffic and I don't even realize sometimes that I am shifting. It becomes second nature. In traffic, I just put it in first and let it idle. If the car in front of me gets 50 feet away, so what. Then he hits the brakea and there I am still creepin and just before I get to him, he zips up another 50 feet and hits the brakes and sits and I am still creepin.
The manual is a little quicker, and a little more fun. Plus if you ever leave your lights on, you can jump start it easily.

Hey, I know how to drive manual, but my upcoming xA(supposed to have been here two weeks ago damnit!) is going to be the first manual car I will own. On the subject of jump starting, how do you do that push start thing? I helped push a friend's car, but I myself have no idea how to do it. . . .
to "jump" start a manual is really easy . . . . .just put the car in first turn the key to the on position. . . . . .push the clutch in so it allows the car to roll. . . . . .then have someone push you and get you rollin pretty good then you hit the gas and pop the clutch quickly and your off. . . . . ..lol not that ive ever had to do that or anything. . . .lol
Another way of pushstarting a car....
1. Disengage clutch, put in 2nd gear and turn on ignition.
2. Begin pushing the car...
3. Engage clutch... The car will start and idle.
4. Disengage clutch and put in 1st gear and drive away.
Note: This can be used using reverse gear as well... pushing backwards though. This method is safer, so not to hurt the people pushing the car.
The 1st gear, engage clutch and gas method... will stop the car quickly and could suprise the pushers; hurt them as well. It also will take a couple attempts for new manual users.

Just some info on pushstarting.
It used to be told by new vehicle companies that pushstarting is not suggested.
Why you ask?
They used to say it was hard on the cat and the O2 sensor/sensors.
Not sure how true it is.
I have always disregarded this info.
