Default tC Short shifter purchase question

I was thinking of getting a short shifter from Ebay with the assembly together, but i saw most of the DIY post are getting out just the shifter and use the original assembly housing back. Since I can get the short shifter with the asembly, and it is just a direct bolt on, so why people want to do that extra work to remove the shifter from the assembly but not just replace the whole assembly? Are they different? Please help me out. Also, is the process be much more simpler if I use the after market assemly, since shift cables will be the only thing to remove?

Go ahead and try the ebay one. I'm sure everyone is curious as to how they are. Personally when it comes to an essential part like that I'd go with a respected name, which is why I installed a B&M.

Bingo... this is the reason people do not go with the full assembly. TRD is the only fully packaged (shifter and assembly) that I know of that appears to be of quality, but it's pricey.

I went with the B&M because I trust them, and I know of many people who have ran them with no problems. It may not be a direct swap, but if you have the tools and some common sense, it really is not a problem to install. Should take about 45 minutes (if you know what you're doing) to 2 hours (if it's your first time dealing with a shifter assembly) to install, including removing everything and putting it all back together.

Yup, took me about an hour and two beers. Go invest in a dremel or clone to cut that lock washer thing off.

hmm.. in my opinion... i think it's easier and better to replace just the shaft.

that whole assembly thing.. hmm.. esp.. that ebay one... really iffy.

Go with just the shifter, their cheaper and the install is not hard, plus you don't don't have to disconnect the shift cables from the assembly. I went with the B&M as well for the same reasons, reputable company and they have earned their reputation.

if you are looking for simplicity go w/ the TRD - I went with the TWM because it was shorter and shorter throws ... I like it a lot.
