Curious. What leads you to believe this wasn't intentional?

Huh? You mean they INTENTIONALLY left a big gaping hole in between the leading edge of the hood and the front bumper that even a GM made car would be ashamed of wearing?

cornfield
06-22-2004, 01:58 AM
and if it was intentional why would they cover it up 4 the show? thats so lame.

I didnt get that either, did they not notice the big ___ gap?

Hmm...that is a pretty big gap...I noticed the gap, but not the cover up in the first picture. Guess you can always paint the ruber part like they did.

is there rubber there to paint? I think they notiiced it looked bad for the show and decided to cover it up.

Sheesh people, it's suppost to be that way. ya need some gap so the hood don't slap the other side when ya shut it. My Celie has the same size gap.

2JZ
06-22-2004, 02:11 AM
intentional? what do you mean by intentional? intentional to leave a gap like tC_Me_Baby suggests? wouldn't make sense if you meant intentional to cover up that gap so blatantly...

i just wish that if they saw fit to try to cover that gap that they would actually try to fix it. i mean, in all honesty, the gap looks bad... maybe that gap exists in ALL cars but just integrated with the design better, i don't know. like couper2 says, it's the same on the celica, but not as noticeable...

but painting the rubber part (is it a rubber part they painted, or an insert?) looks like a good idea...

whoa so many ppl replying to this i have no time to edit my post lol...

anyway, maybe it looks better in person... anyone know? there was one guy who posted really high res pics of a white tC when he went to see the demo... dunno what his name is... has a pi of his gf for his avatar... anyway, if you're that guy and are reading this, any comments?

cornfield
06-22-2004, 02:27 AM
I have commented on it b4 as some other people have. gives the tC a rushed unfinished look. for those that say it was intentional. why would they try and cover it up at the show? they knew they f'ed up and wanted to fix it. oh well might have to wait for the 06 model. or get some painted rubber like they did.

looks like they went throgh the trouble to correct it on all the show cars.

your point?

yea they were photoshoped but the hoods weren't. you can clearly see the colored rubber covering the gap. I guess it would be more acceptable if scion actually sold the tC with the rubber covering the gap. But they didn't they just didn't want potential buyers and reviewers to notice.

yea that photoshopped white pic was the first white tC i saw and i loved it... i saw a non-professional/non-show car pic of it and the feeling fell a lil bit... but nonetheless i think i'm still getting white...

anywho... i'm just hoping that it's not as bad in person.... some cars just aren't photogenic

I went to the dealer and saw the gap first hand. Yes it is there to stay and NO there isn't a rubber piece there to paint. I had the dealer open up the hood to check.

It isn't a big deal for me because I am purchasing a black tC so it shouldn't show up to much.

couper thinks its there for some reason. I don't mind that it's there cos im getting black as well. just thought it strange that they decided to cover it up for the showroom critics. it stands out alot on the white so filling it in with rubber or something should fix it nicely.

guys i think that the gap is there...

so you can open the hood... you know to check the oil, washer fluid, coolant, change a plug or two...

if it really bothers you, wait 1-2 yrs (maybe less) and some rice company will have a one piece flip forward front end that you can waste your money on.

So you can check your fluids?? Puhlease. You guys are coming up with so many excuses for this that it is pathetic. On just about every car, the hood mechanism pops the hood up AT LEAST a few inches so that you have enough clearance to get your fingers under the hood and lift it up.

2JZ
06-22-2004, 02:11 PM
to open the hood? check fluids? lol... there's already a thing to assist with that... it's the handle inside your car, usually on the drivers' side in the footwell, that says "open hood". pull it, and it unlatches the hood enough to get your fingers underneath to open it.

i mean, i look at the BMW 3series and love the grille integrated into the hood thing... looks sleek and clean... then i look at the z4 and see that they messed up the design by separating the grille and hood and now there's a line going through it. it might just be the design that made the tC's hood look like that... but you have to admit that the 3series hood looks better than the z4 hood just because it doesn't have that line going across (but again, that's my personal preference). that was just a comment on design... even still the gap between hood and grille isn't that big and it manages to keep the lines tight enough not to be noticaeable after that.

i'm not comparing BMWs to Scions. i mean, even on the celica it doesn't look as gap-py... on my IS, the hood is the top part of the grille and it still looks clean. i'm saying that i've never seen a hood gap so big on any other car except on the tC so noticeable that they have to attempt to cover it up at a SHOW. that just shows that they have a gripe about it too, but was too late to fix it. it's a gripe, that's all. if all other cars can have tight lines and STILL be "opened" then why couldn't scion? who's the idiot that goofed the hood design and missed it by the few millimeters to force Scion to insert something in there?

Another BMW to Scion comparison: Look at the BMW 8-series. It cost $80K new. It has the same sort of problem as the tC. The hood and front bumper don't touch, and there is a gap with a rubber insert. The integra has it too. I believe it is there for a legitimate reason, even though it doesn't look so great. Maybe there is a problem with the different expansion properties of the plastic and metal. If the hood were lined up with the front bumper, perhaps the two would not fit together right on really hot days or something.

I'm not trying to make excuses for Toyota, but if BMW did the same thing on their flagship car, perhaps it really is too much to ask for it to be fixed on a relatively inexpensive Scion.

If you want an example of a design mistake, look at a white intega. It has a POS look at the front because it has a huge gap running all the way across the area where the hood and front fenders meet. It is really cheap and cheasy looking .

I got the silver metallic paint on my '07 that I picked up last Saturday, and the gap bugs the crap out of me! How could they let this otherwise really nice looking tC have such a noticable flaw? When I walk out to my car it's like that gap has some weird effect on me and I key in on it everytime - NOT happy with it at all. Love the car, HATE the gap. Would a CF hood cure my gap troubles?
