View Full Version : Gas Cap Holder
cmdxb 06-23-2004, 03:26 PM I searched, couldnt find anything on this subject. You know the place where you put the gas cap when refueling, normally there is a slot on the backside of the gas door for it, our boxes just have a crappy plastic hangy thing that makes the cap rub on the body. Anyone know where to get one, and or have u fabricated one?...it looks like there is a place to install one, being there are holes for bolts on the back of the door..just a thought! 8)
Al-Truistic 06-23-2004, 03:31 PM There is a post from a while back of someone finding a Honda part I believe that can be glued or taped onto the inside of the gas door, even had the Honda part number and was supposed to work pretty well...
silkywilson 06-23-2004, 04:14 PM Im gonna check today I have been thinking bout it in the past My IS300 has a little hanger peice that hangs the cap by the teather and it just clips on the frame of the gas door Im gonna go see if it will work on the Box...
Al-Truistic 06-23-2004, 04:22 PM Sounds cool and you'd think it would be perfect with it being a Lexus part...keep us posted and get us a part number if it works! Could you also check if an is300 engine would work as well, heh heh...

i totally remember that post and was searching for about 13 minutes but found nothing. Maybe somebody else has some better luck. :?
bBted 06-23-2004, 04:25 PM somebody did it long time ago...
what he did is get the gas cap holder from a honda accord (ordered from dealer) and double side tape it on to the gas door
xvolcomx88 06-23-2004, 05:34 PM I did it after reading that post also. It works really well. I just went to a Honda Dealer and got the part(i cant remeber the part #). All you have to do though is cut off the tabs from the back of the holder and then stick it on with some doublestick tape.

That should help. :)

bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:02 AM great idea BUT it costs $$$. I took a large ziptie looped it around the center of the lower inner bracket of the fuel door and aimed it up then cut it off with 1 inch of ziptie left sticking out. Then when you remove the gas cap just drape the tether over it and it keeps the cap away from the paint until you're finished. cheap and very useful :P 8)
djct_watt 07-07-2004, 04:11 AM I did something similar, except I was too cheap for a zip tie. . . j/k.
I'm not sure if the xB has it, but on the xA it is a remotely opened gas door. There is a little piece that locks the door to the body when you close it. I just drape my gas cap with the tether thingie over that piece. . . works nicely! :D
the_saint 07-07-2004, 04:17 AM I've got a suggesstion for anybody who wants/needs a gas cap holder, and it's FREE!!
1) Unscrew gas cap
2) Remove fuel filler nozzle
3)Place gas cap in cradle for fuel filler nozzle
4)Fuel vehicle
Instant gas cap holder
Always there
Always "FREE"!
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:18 AM On the xB the only thing that the tether reaches is the spring tap that pushes the fuel door open and it slides right off tried it a couple times and cussed it out then came up with the ziptie  8)
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:25 AM hey saint inorder to do that you'd have to remove the tether altogether that means possible lost gas cap, i've seen too many of those sitting on the pumps :(
djct_watt 07-07-2004, 04:26 AM 3)Place gas cap in cradle for fuel filler nozzle
What cradle? Our gas cap is attached to the car!
DJ_X_Trodinaire 07-07-2004, 04:31 AM 3)Place gas cap in cradle for fuel filler nozzle

lol
he probably meant the hook for the cable which is on the fuel door
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:34 AM hey saint inorder to do that you'd have to remove the tether altogether that means possible lost gas cap, i've seen too many of those sitting on the pumps :(
djct_watt 07-07-2004, 04:38 AM possibly. . . that's what I thought but I had posted it earlier so I guess not. I was guessing he meant the cradle for the gas pump. . . but that makes no sense either because again it is attached to the car. Anyway not a biggie.
Jethro mentioned that it couldn't work for his xB tho cuz it slides off. . .
Luckily my xA hooks in real nice.
the_saint 07-07-2004, 04:39 AM oops, my bad  i don't have my box yet and didn't know that the cap is already tethered to the vehicle.
 open mouth, insert foot
djct_watt 07-07-2004, 04:44 AM Incase you haven't figured out the best part...you can't (unless you are incredibly inept) lose the gas cap since you can't put the nozzle back until you've replaced the fuel cap.
I know you already apologized so I guess it's cool, but you can imagine how that looks. . . but no harm done
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:46 AM hooking it over the gascap latch would have worked but the tether is too short, and hanging it over the door just puts it on a different painted surface. The ziptie method eliminates the whole problem :D

yeah, lol. But how come I can't delete the post?
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 04:57 AM yea good question! You can edit your post but not delete it. Sometimes it registers twice i don't get it :? :?:
xvolcomx88 07-07-2004, 05:00 AM It costs $5 for the gas cap holder....are u guys really that cheap?
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 05:14 AM I can't speak for others: but the nearest honda dealer to me is an hour drive, and they won't order it unless you pay for it first that means a possible 2nd trip. And yes I am a cheap SOB why buy something if you can make it work and look ok at the same time without spending hardearned $$$$ thats what its all about :!: DO IT YOURSELF . 8)

xvolcomx88 07-07-2004, 05:20 AM Putting a honda part on a scion....thats DIY right?
bB2NER 07-07-2004, 05:28 AM Thats a very good reason not to buy a honda part for a Scion. It might even have a honda symbol on it too. kind of like when they put chevy motors Oh I mean engine in a Ford streetrod. THAT'S JUST WRONG

I have it...it doesnt have a symbol
silkywilson 07-07-2004, 05:47 AM I got and tried the lexus part and its just a hanger like to dangle the cap by the teather and I like the CRV one better I think im gonna try the CRV dealio..
deager 07-07-2004, 08:37 PM I just ordered two of the Honda fuel cap holders from my local Honda dealer today. One for my xB and one for my RSX. The 366403 number in a previous post and on the macconect link is NOT a Honda part #. It is some kind of reference number. The parts guys had some diffficulty crossing it to a part #. The actual part # is 74423-SP0-000 and it's for some model of a Civic. The dealer charged me $4.43 each.
The macconnect link does have good mounting instructions, which I'll be trying as soon as my parts come in.
WeirdScionz 07-08-2004, 12:03 AM Looks like it's available online at:
http://www.upfrontmarketinginc.com/gas_cap_holder.htm
$3.99 + 1.95 s/h
Though the pictures look like a swipe from the macconnect instructions:

CamoxBInSC 07-09-2004, 02:20 AM I think I might order that part. But first to wait for an email telling me where they are from and how they ship. They dont have any of that info online. Is that kinda strange? Would yall trust them?
http://www.upfrontmarketinginc.com/gas_cap_holder.htm
RPMxB 07-09-2004, 04:06 PM I ordered my cap holder from the parts dept. at one of my local Honda dealers yesterday. Unlike my Toyota/Scion dealership, the Honda place was dead; nobody there. The sales manager stepped out of the shade and met me as I opened the door of my new xB:
He said, "new Scion xB?"
I said, "Yes."
Honda guy, "How do you like it?"
I said, "...Love it; I need your parts dept."
Honda, "OK, right this way."
I explained that Scion owners had found that a Honda Civic gas cap holder was a perfect mod for the xB. He had no further comment.
It required a special order; I'll have it in 10 days; cost: $5.64. RPM
WeirdScionz 07-09-2004, 08:51 PM I think I might order that part. But first to wait for an email telling me where they are from and how they ship. They dont have any of that info online. Is that kinda strange? Would yall trust them?
http://www.upfrontmarketinginc.com/gas_cap_holder.htm
I went ahead and took the risk for $5.94 shipped. If I don't get it I'll let PayPal and my credit card company sort it out. I'll report back either way.
CamoxBInSC 07-09-2004, 08:54 PM I went ahead and ordered one to. They are in Ohio and they ship USPS. We will see if I get one.
WeirdScionz 07-12-2004, 06:55 PM I received my gas cap holder from UpFront Marketing today. It's not the CR-V holder as pictured on their site. It's a generic gas cap holder with the adhesive mounting tape already applied so no need to cut off tabs and apply tape as with the CR-V one. Rather than being a half-circle it's rectangular with a half-circle cutout to hold the gas cap. The mounting tape looks a little thin but I have to wait until the deluge stops around here before I can install it.
CamoxBInSC 07-12-2004, 10:09 PM Well I got mine in today as well, it looks like it will do the job, now to go and put it on my box.
CamoxBInSC 07-13-2004, 12:00 AM Well I put it on my box. It works. Isnt a high tech mod or anything but it keeps the cap from laying against the paint. If you have a few extra dollars this is a good thing to invest in.
breunor 07-13-2004, 01:07 PM Maybe I got a longer cap wire, but my gas cap hangs low enough that no part of the cap touches paint, it just barely hangs below the wheel well. I personally like the zip tie idea though, will likely go with that. I'd wonder whether the thin adhesive will continue to stick between hot and humid weather changes.
phillycaster 02-17-2006, 10:21 PM Resurrecting this thread becuase I just got the holder from www.handa-accessories.com today. No tape needed on the xB, clips right on the inside of the gas tank cover.....

io333 02-17-2006, 10:27 PM uh. i hate to break this to you guys, but the scion HAS a holder on the fuel door. You just have to hang the cap off the LIP of the cap, in the "up and down" position, rather than sideways like you all apparently are used to. If you'd ever had an old volvo, you'd already know how to do this.
EDIT EDIT EDIT!!!!!
What I posted above was so completely wrong I can't believe it. Wrong car completely. Sorry, I was thinking of a completely different car.
Flecs 02-17-2006, 10:30 PM ima hafta try this!
bB2NER 02-19-2006, 08:25 PM Just go to the store and buy a six pack of those towel hooks. They come with 2 sided tape and have a finger sticking out that you can drape the cap tether strap over. The cap stays far away from the paint. Best of all the mod only costs around a buck.
Phillycaster, how much did that thing cost? It looks like it would work but kinda overkill :lalala:
Myopic 02-19-2006, 11:23 PM
phillycaster 02-20-2006, 01:02 AM I got 2 of'em and it was $14 with shipping. I know, expensive! Probably cheaper if you go to the local Honda dealer and order 'em.
bB2NER 02-20-2006, 04:52 AM Dude, those weren't as much as I expected. Do you think they may stock that number at a delaer? Or where did you order them from? I may pick one up.
phillycaster 02-20-2006, 05:19 AM www.handa-accessories.com
Here's the link with the holder...near the bottom. Instead of taking off the clips and using tape, just use the clips to hook it in the inside of the xB gas tank door :P
http://www.handa-accessories.com/crvext01.html
I don't know if dealers stock them. Earlier in the thread folks ordered them through a dealer to save on shipping costs.
bB2NER 02-20-2006, 06:06 AM OK I'll take the part number with me while on the road and check out some dealers for this part. Thanks!
tanakasan 02-25-2006, 08:31 PM I was hanging my gas cap over the fuel door again today. As I'm filling, I see this "squiggle" in the tether line. It happens to fit over the door spring and holds the cap perfectly. Not touching any painted surfaces!
Heres the door open. You can see the gas door spring and zig-zag in the tether:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/armano/gascap2.jpg
Close up:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/armano/gascap3.jpg
Heres the cap hooked up:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v142/armano/gascap1.jpg
Do a 180 with the tether, pivot it around. See how its pointed out in the second pic. Then it will hang the cap by the "Z" bend.
I knew Scion would not forget something so simple. Just needed to "see" it as they designed it!
hayalex6 02-25-2006, 08:35 PM mm, you know it also clips onto the gas door...
tanakasan 02-25-2006, 09:40 PM ^^ Never tried that!
But then is the cap sitting against the outside door paint or sticks out somewhat? Also, Scion paint is soft anyway, don't need tons of tiny scrape marks along the edge. Thats the beauty of this alternate method.
hayalex6 02-25-2006, 10:59 PM Never touches the paint for me. But I like your method as well.
bB2NER 02-27-2006, 01:53 AM 05's got no squiggle. Thats why I use the 20 cent self stick towel hook trick LOL
cmdxb 02-27-2006, 05:34 PM 04 doesnt have that either...cool tho
OakToddler 02-28-2006, 01:52 AM I am ordering that Perma-Cap.
Anyone got one?
OakToddler 02-28-2006, 01:53 AM http://superiorcarcare.net/permacapgascap.html
bB2NER 02-28-2006, 02:23 AM I am ordering that Perma-Cap.
Anyone got one?I'd call first and make sure it will fit. The applications only cover up to 03' Toyota cars. Looks like a cool idea. Hopefully it won't throw a code like it does when the cap isn't on tightly.
hotbox05 03-01-2006, 08:04 PM 05 doesnt have that.
OakToddler 03-26-2006, 07:01 PM I skipped the perma cap and got the honda holder from HANDA and it is great.
Thanks Pillycaster!
I first I couldnt figure out how to snap it in and also note it is on at a little angle which makes it more receptive to placing the cap in it.
Hard to get on but the holder is not coming off that is for sure.
You've just got to give it a little space when you squeeze the holder on the back of the door between the inside back of door and the bracket going across.
Door closes real nice too. We have full service in Jerzzy so it had a good chance of chipping the paint with the cap just hanging.
The holder looks like it belongs there.
bB2NER 03-27-2006, 01:50 AM But now you have to hope the gas jockeys actually use them. That whole "can't pump your own gas thing" is some funny caca. And another reason I hate delivering freight in Jersey.
OakToddler 03-27-2006, 02:14 AM They will use the cap holder, I am sure.
And they don't usually top off the tank blah blah blah.
I just took my Outback Sport all the way up to Nova Scotia and had to pump my own gas which was no problem and a novelty, but everytime I got back in the car my family complained how stinky I was for at least 30 minutes. I guess it was fumes. So, as a consumer I guess someone pumping my own gas is OK.
bB2NER 03-27-2006, 03:06 AM If you had fumes on you, your are doing something wrong. LOL I hate the whole idea of handing my credit card to someone to pump my gas and not top it off. My van usually holds another 6 gallons + after it first clicks. They make me leave with only a little over 3/4's tank of gas everytime.
OakToddler 03-27-2006, 03:14 AM I guess its subjective.
JEFFIEBOY 04-10-2006, 06:54 PM Just ordered two from the local Honda dealer (one for my new RS 3.0 and one for the local dealer dolly who has one). Not in stock there but at the local warehouse with one day turn around. The warehouse wanted to know ho come theye're selling so many.
bB2NER 04-10-2006, 07:50 PM Just ordered two from the local Honda dealer (one for my new RS 3.0 and one for the local dealer dolly who has one). Not in stock there but at the local warehouse with one day turn around. The warehouse wanted to know ho come theye're selling so many.Did you happen to explain it to him?
JEFFIEBOY 04-10-2006, 08:29 PM No cause it was passed thru the parts guy. I'm giving one to my Scion salesperson in the Honda bag for her XB with a suggestion that they get a bunch and install in all XB's
OakToddler 04-14-2006, 12:22 AM The clip-in method did not work after 2 fill-ups!!
I shaved the back of the holder and used the 3m VHB tape on it.
Now its more level too.
Anyone else doing OK with it just clipped in?
JEFFIEBOY 04-14-2006, 12:27 AM Evidently Scion beefed up the reinforcing crossbar and made it too thick for the clips to work, or the new cap holders have changed. I also cut off the clips and double sticky taped it on. I also cut off the lanyard as it tended to want to pull the gas cap back out.
phillycaster 04-14-2006, 02:20 AM Yea.....I ended up using the tape. I used the bottom clip in the grrove on the door and used 2 pieces of the 2-sided-tape stacked and worked perfectly. I also cut the strap from the door and the gas cap so they can't let it hang & bang!
UncleBead 04-14-2006, 07:16 PM Regarding the perma-cap.
I had one for my old Saturn and they would not pass it for emissions (PA) with a permacap. I kept a regular one to throw on for inspections and then put the perma-cap on.

RS3xBToaster 05-07-2006, 02:53 AM Thx guys Im ordering mine on Monday. I never thought about getting one from a different car lol My moms Rav4 has a metal one welded to her gas door. but this plastic one seems a better deal than welding one on. plus I can buy the Touch up paint for my RS 3 and paint the new gas cap holder to match the car so its not this black thing in the gas door.
OakToddler 05-09-2006, 02:10 AM Wow, yours is real high up!
I have mine riding along the top of that bottom brace frame thing.
Is paint gonna stay on this thing? It may not be worth your while and it will chip off.
Its basic flat black and no one sees it.
oBnoXious_XB 05-09-2006, 08:00 AM hmm, so anybody have luck with the permacap?

RS3xBToaster 05-10-2006, 04:01 AM I forgot to order mine from honda I guess i will do that tommorow
rogcjms 06-24-2006, 08:38 PM i just called my local Honda dealer and the part # i found on here is not a good part #. I know the gas cap holder is for a Civic but do not know what year. I found the same part# on the page that someone linked where they put it on a CRV but I need a newer part # and what year and model the cap holder is for.
JEFFIEBOY 06-26-2006, 03:46 PM Right off the bag that mine came in, from Honda:
