My xB was delivered with three keys and two transmitters on the same ring. Why anyone would tape a key inside the gas door is beyond me!

No doubt.
You need to get in the car to pull the gas cap door.
Inless you didnt lock yourself out, only lost the key for the ign.
Would be a hady place if you could get to it in a pinch.

Some folks keep their transmitter separate from their key for security reasons.
The Scion transmitter has a lot of range, and if a Bad Guy gets one they can tell which car is yours pretty easily! Without a key, he can't drive it away easily, though.
However, I don't think that keeping a key inside the gas door is such a good idea. If a Bad Guy figures it out it is no trick to pry open the gas door to get at it.
