View Full Version : 3rd brake light LED mod *PICS*

Okay, so I am modding the 3rd brake light, as it only has 6 LED's in the middle (I don't know why).

I installed superflux LED's with 12,000MCD and 120° viewing angle. These LED's are a more pure red, and makes the stock LED's look more orange. I may have to change those as well.

Everything looks completely stock (as it should). The brightness is perfect. There is no errors in the angles of the LED's.

Enjoy the pics, and ask questions if you have any.

P.S. You may notice the harness is missing. I took it out so I can test it, but it will go back on. This will be a plug and play mod.

I will set it up so all you have to do is wire a switch in-line with the extra wire I leave hanging from the lens, and ground.

Very very nice, please do us a favor and create some tailights to go with it.

I/m actually working on an LED mod for the 3rd brake light and tail lights on the xb. of course, I'll also work on the tc tail lights.

nice ! still $80?

that's for the light done with no switch. If you want a switch, it'll be a bit more (not much, maybe $10 - $15 more).

Also, I have a special treat for everyone. I'll post some pics tomorrrow. I KNOW everyone will LOVE it!! heheheheheeeee...... :silly: :silly:

I have blue/red, green/red, white/red, blue/white for bi-color LED's.

What kind of time frame are we looking at here overall? (send you the light, work done, returned) I'm in chicago. I use my car daily and i'd really like to not get pulled over and have to make up a bs excuse as to where my extra light is... so the quicker the better.

My turnaround time for led gauges and such is 1 - 2 days (usually 1 day), but for the brake light, it will be 2 - 3 days.

I have wireless D-Link 108G setup in my home, and I got the 20" Widescreen Dell LCD, so I think I'm set now.

As far as leaks, I seal the lens, then apply some silicone. If it passes my "dunk in water test" then you get it back. If it fails, well, then you still get it back (after I apply some more silicone).

Not that I know of, but if it does leak, or go out, I will fix it.

You are correct. You send me your OEM piece, and I mod it, and send it back. I don't mind selling a brand new piece, but that means me going to the dealer and buying one to mod (it would be $80 + the price of the lens).

Does any1 know how much the OEM 3rd brake light goes for? and what is the part number or weblink to a location that sells them?
Or how much would it cost for the whole thing to be done brand new?

etli
06-22-2006, 10:14 PM
3rd brake light from the dealer costs about $100. If you're lucky you can get one off a wrecked scion tc for less ($40 - $60). Most salvage yards won't let you buy only the third brake light unless the hatch is damaged because they're used to selling the whole rear hatch as one giant piece.

Hey Whiteblazer, where did you get 12000 mcd 120 degree superfluxes? I can only find 70 degree superfluxes at FutureElectronics.com.

I have them specially manufactured for me (really!). If you want some LED's, let me know, and I can send some your way.

I had some UV superflux LED's manufactured for me, and the are in stock. I got UV LED's made for the clock on the xb, I'm getting UV led's for the gauges, and I'm trying to get pink LED's made for the gauges (I know the girls would like these).

For the third brake light, there are 4 nuts holding the light on, but you have to take the plastic off from the hatch.

I used a dremel to open it. I don't remember the dremel cut-off wheel number, but I'll post it for those interested.

As for putting it back, I used some plastic weld, then used some silicone.

WhiteBazer01 and I hung out in the humid heat in SFV / 818 yesterday for our team LED workshop. We didn't intend to do 13hrs of work but (speaking for myself) I had learned a lot from Paul and enjoyed the knowledge he shared w/ us.

To any that NEED to do LEDs done by Paul, my suggestion is just do it....he's a perfectionist and the work performance is top notch. He finally took pix of the 1st tC w/ the 3rd brake light yesterDAY & yesterNITE and he should have pix up when he recoveres from lack of sleep.

There's also cool stuff for xBs coming in the near future. So xB owners make sure to check these pages for the new mods.

Hmmm... Could it be possible to use those multicolor LED's for the center console and gauges? I live in Bellflower man, and I'm so hyped to get this done... I tinted my third brake light with nightshades, and since that stuff has a red tint, I think the blue my show up a little funky. If so, I could just take it off with Nail Polish remover.

LEDMods_net
07-03-2006, 08:07 AM
hmmm... its not impossible, but it will be very difficult. Very difficult. to the point where it would not be worth it. you wouldn't use these bi-color LED's, but they do have bi-color surface mount LED's.

As for your tinted 3rd brake light, you could try to remove it that way, but be careful not to mess up the lens.

Is it just me or do the middle two LED's on the original LED bar look brighter than the two sets of two LED's on the ends of the original light bar?

http://www.ledmods.net/images/tc3rdbrakelight3a.jpg

Is that because of the way the LED's are all wired? Or is it some sort of "angle" thing?
