Auto or 5speed
Hey im about to buy a Tc and my dad being ___ and wants me to but Auto since im only 17 and hes finacing it 4 me i gotta listen 2 him and although i very little experience wit Manuel i still want it a 5speed. can u ppl tell me some pro's bc even the guy at the dealer says auto is better!
Easier to drive, no need to learn, safer for beginners, better gas mileage, you can drive and talk on the phone or hold drinks at the same times. Although, thats inherently unsafe, but its even worse with an stick. O, and enjoy your new car.

guy at the dealership doesnt really care as long as he gets the sale. i was stuck in the same position u were..i wanted a 5spd but they got me an auto. sure the 5 spd is prolly more fun to drive but im still happy with mine. and with all the stop and go city driving i do, it wouldnt have been as fun as i thought if i had a manual. the auto was better for my situation and im glad my parents made that decision for me. whenever i pay for my own car, then i'll get what i want.

You'll appreciate the auto loads in stop/start traffic or when you're just trying to get somewhere without really caring about the driving.
On a car like this it's not as big a deal as on a high end sports car either, it's not like the Scion has perfect weight distribution, razor sharp handling and that an auto gearbox would be a waste of a car. I'm not knocking the tC at all by saying that, but if you were buying a Porsche I'm sure everyone would tell you it'd be a crime not to get a manual.
If you desperately want a 5 speed, you could point out that the 5 speed is around $800 less, and maybe even see if you can test drive one and see how you get on with it.

Well I don't agree w/ auto necessairly being "better." I had an auto when I got my grandma's car when I was 16, and had no problems with it. But I had to get a 5-spd when I got my tC. And I'm loving it, even with the rush hour commute every morning/night. You're still going tobe fine auto or stick, it's a great car, so I wouldn't be too discouraged. And like the other guys said, give it a couple year to get some cash under your belt and get whatever you want!
why dont u show him the pros and cons of having a stick and adress his concerns i mean he is doing u a favor by financing it for u but i did go through the same thing back when i grad from highschool my dad got me a 96 eclipse gsx auto i didnt even know they made them in auto but i said screw it it was the car i wanted that was easier to drive but i still modded it and it was a lot of fun but yeah i do miss that car
pros of having a stick are: you can either drive it normal, or shift at 6000rpms each gear, basically you have total control over the car and it's more fun to drive
cons of having a stick are: Stalling Out, Heavy Traffic (it can suck sometimes), basically driving when your tired sucks, possibility the clutch can go out one day
pros of having an auto are: you don't have to shift, you can do other things while driving, don't have to worry about stalling out, you don't have to replace a clutch it it goes out, etc.
cons of having an auto: Overall it can be slower, depending on the driver, not as fun...but still enjoyable

when our daughter first was able to drive, she was interested in a stick for her first car, and we were behind her 100% ( easier to learn when you are younger ). Her first car was a late 90's sunfire with a manual which was a good learning car. After 2 years it was time for a replacment so we helped her get a newer car--again with a stick. She wanted nothing to do with an AT and though we were helping her get this car, it was her car so a manual is what she got. She paid a good chunk towards it, has to drive it every day, and deserved to get what she wanted/has worked for.
I guess my point is if parents are buying a car for their child, the child should be thankful for whatever that car is. If that child is the one paying for that car, then they have every right to have a say in what it is.

I bought an auto because I didn't think that I was ready to drive a brand new car that was a 5 speed, since I had little experience at the time. I'm happy with my decision because I probably would have wrecked a 5 speed tC within days of buying it due to a lack of experience.
