View Full Version : Exhaust Installation (DC Sports)
scionlife 06-24-2004, 03:09 AM Easy, easy, easy. This must have taken about ten minutes using hand-tools, a jack and a concrete driveway. The end result looked great and sounded deeper with a little bit of popping when the engine reved back down (racecar-like good).
1. Tools Required:
- Floor Jack and jackstands
- 12mm wrench or socket wrench
- Long screwdriver (for prying)
- WD40
- DC Sport Instructions (downloadable) (http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/instructions.gif)
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/00.jpg
2. Exhaust System
As you can see the piping is routed considerably differently than the OEM exhaust.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/01.jpg
3. Jack up the car
Make sure that you are not working under a car that is sitting solely on the jack. I have seen jacks fail! I placed two stands under the car where the arrows indicate.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/02.jpg
4. Look at the stock system
The stock exhaust is hung from the chassis with two rubber hangers and attached to the mid-pipe with a clamp.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/03.jpg
5. Remove the clamp
Oops, in this photo you can see that I have a wrench on the front and back of the clamp to remove the 12mm bolt. Well, the back is attached to the clamp so you only need the front wrench to remove the bolt.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/04.jpg
6. Lube the hangers
To get the rubber hangers off you need to first spray them with WD40. This will help them slide off. Spray the lower area as we will be leaving the hangers on the car.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/05.jpg
7. Remove the hangers and ditch the exhaust
Pry the hangers off with a long screwdriver. This is a little tricky, but they will come off.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/06.jpg
9. Hang the new exhaust from the hangers
We first hooked the rear-most hanger, then the one near the clamp. This seemed to be the easiest way.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/08.jpg
8. Re-install the clamp
Here is a close-up of the clamp with the new exhaust installed. There is a slight gap, but when you tighten the clamp on the gap will reduce until it is really tight.
http://www.scionlife.com/tech/images/exhaust_install_xb/07.jpg
9. Check out the new exhaust
Make sure that there is no rubbing anywhere. Our exhaust fit perfectly and gave the back of the car that JDM look with the slightly angled canister and flush tip.

housedj 08-04-2004, 02:34 AM Another (safer) way to get the box up would have been to use ramps. I have some plastic ones from Checker Auto that will hold up to 3k lbs. You could still use a jack (i recommend 3 1/2 ton) to lift up a side if needed. The ramps are low enough for most cars (even some lowered ones).
signed, ALL KNOWING
cameracar 08-17-2004, 09:19 PM Using ramps would be a prefered method since the xB has virtually no solid alternate jacking points to allow a confident positioning of jack stands. (the car looked like it wanted to move using the positions indicated above but was solid when I nudged it)
ljljaylj 09-02-2004, 08:41 AM hey on the stock exhaust tip..how do u take it off..i bought a new exhaust tip wonderin if i can chagne it or not..tanks!
mikochu 09-02-2004, 10:41 AM hey on the stock exhaust tip..how do u take it off..i bought a new exhaust tip wonderin if i can chagne it or not..tanks!
I believe there is a screw...but even with the screw off, it's still a summa_____ to take off. I heard it takes the elbow grease of 1000 men to take it off. Good luck taking it off and I hope you don't cut yourself or something...
cameracar 09-02-2004, 04:33 PM Before I had sprung for the GReddy, I had put a tip on my OEM exhaust. There are 3 tabs pressed down on the original pipe. Just pry them up with a screw driver and grab the tip with a pair of vise grips to wiggle and pull it straight back. This is not a reversible process because the original tip will bend up real easily. After you remove it the [small] pipe is ready to take the new tip. If you bought a generic one from Wal-Mart like I did, you will need to use the extra long clips to clap it on. It looks nice but you are really going to miss out on the nice sound.
fusionscion 09-15-2004, 02:12 AM i had to cut the muffler off the piping on the dc sport exhaust... it sat like a dragger set-up all angled and under hard accel.. it moved a lil bit and burn the side of my lava.... so now i cut and welded new bends and it sits up nice and tight... i actually am looking to get rid of that... any offers send to petepicc11@aol.com . .. . . .. scionlife, ull get ur cut too if thats what ull tell me....
05_blue_onyx 10-19-2004, 12:38 AM what does the exhaust sound like does it sound like a honda or does it sound good?
jcs_xb 10-20-2004, 08:13 PM wat kind of exhaust was used for the instalation???
cameracar 10-20-2004, 09:40 PM what does the exhaust sound like does it sound like a honda or does it sound good?
I'm not sure what that one sounds like but my Greddy EVO sounds better and better each day...getting deeper and deeper. 8)
irv_usc 11-18-2004, 04:31 AM instead of using WD40, which causes the rubber hangers to deteriorate faster, use a silicone lubricant.
bdatws1_at_hotmail_com 11-18-2004, 10:43 PM Is this the Axle-Back or the Cat-Back? On Instant Messenger w/vividracing, I was told that (SCS6401) is a cat-back system while our Parts section on the forum says (SCS6401) is an axle-back system. I'm confused. Can anyone claify? Thanks!
cameracar 11-19-2004, 02:34 AM Technically, the joint is just in front to the axle but the Cat is on the single 4.5' pipe from the axle to the header...not really sure how to catagorize it
firesquare 11-23-2004, 12:23 AM just got my blitz! cant wait to throw it on!!
jarocho 12-07-2004, 07:14 PM I somehow broke the ceramic gasket when I put on my muffler. I was real careful too. Do I need this gasket? The muffler fits real snug, there is no exhaust leaking out, and everything sounds real good. Does this part do anything else besides make a tight seal?

Yes, replace the the ceramic exhaust gasket. Not only does it make for a good solid fit and no leaks, BUT it will also prevent your muffler from moving around and melting your bumper!

Thanks, just ordered the part.
squirrel 12-07-2004, 11:33 PM You're welcome.
firesquare 12-08-2004, 02:19 AM whoos i lost that gasket a LONG time ago when i was messin around without a muffler.
how much to replace one?
jarocho 12-11-2004, 10:59 PM whoos i lost that gasket a LONG time ago when i was messin around without a muffler.
how much to replace one?
It cost me $13 bucks at the dealer.
cameracar 12-13-2004, 05:01 AM $9.84 at the dealer in Frederick
stupidriver 01-04-2005, 01:46 AM Look on eBay if you wanna deal!
TheDanger 03-02-2005, 05:13 PM instead of using WD40, which causes the rubber hangers to deteriorate faster, use a silicone lubricant.
where can you get this?
cameracar 03-03-2005, 04:06 AM any auto parts store i.e. Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, even at Wal-mart
MacMaster 03-12-2005, 01:51 PM Hey wondering if this thing, well i know it's street legal, but if it will pass inspections if installed by myself??
firesquare 03-12-2005, 11:15 PM yup
cameracar 03-14-2005, 02:22 AM Wouldn't think it would be a problem. The whole system is clamped together. Who would know who turned the the bolts but you? :lalala:
Travst 04-06-2005, 12:36 AM Because of the play in the rubber hanger on the back of the DC exhaust, my pipe tends to slip to one side and has melted a small spot on the bumper. I'm working on a fix for that and will post it here.
The DC muffler has a very nice tone to it and looks great. Seat of the pants performance increase was observed after installing the (axleback) exhaust and a K&N Typhoon intake. My DC header will come next!
MacMaster 04-10-2005, 02:31 AM anyone know if the strup exhaust pipe mounts the same way as this one does, I imagine that it does?
cameracar 04-11-2005, 01:41 AM You'll need to replace the gasket and maybe the clamp that holds the muffler in order for the pipe to stop moving from side to side...and be sure its tight. I also found that when I added headers to my car that the whole pipe wanted to move out of place. I had to hold the whole exhuast up and reclamp the joints at both the header and tail back in order for the cat not to sag down and thus move the tail pipe into the plastic facia.
scixB 04-16-2005, 09:34 PM do any of you know when you order the sport exhaust from the dealer if its the dc sprt or trd? i got a part number PT90117400-15 thank you.
MacMaster 04-18-2005, 08:24 PM OMG Just installed my new Strup exhaust!!!! Sounds amazing and looks great, i do not like the stickers they sent me however, they were all buckelled and messed up. But i got one to work anyway. But who cares, i have a kickass exhaust on now!~!!!!!! I RECCOMEND STRUP, theres a $30 mail in rebate on right now too, order from partshippers.com!!
Daewootech 04-26-2005, 12:02 AM Another (safer) way to get the box up would have been to use ramps. I have some plastic ones from Checker Auto that will hold up to 3k lbs. I have ramps and my 2k5 Xb is too low to be able to drive onto them!!! anyone who tries to do that i suggest checking to make sure your ramps are not too steep for your scion to drive onto, i tried to stick some wood to make the approach not as steep and the gearing on the scion is too short it shot the wood to my back wheels!
i ended up using the stock wheel jack to lift it up and then used two car jacks to life the car by the axle, and then places the wheel ramps on top, PITA!!!
WannaBeXB 06-21-2005, 12:39 AM I need a strup sound pic please. Searched but no luck and the web site wont load it for me.
biblicone 11-02-2005, 06:42 PM Has anyone been able to figure out how to get the DC Sports tip to align perfectly in the center of the hole in the bumper? Mine leans slightly towards the passenger side of the car. It doesnt quite touch (luckily). Should I unbolt it and turn it ever so slightly? And could it be that the gasket was stuck on the stock pipe? I didnt see one on my car... weird.
tyrantcold 02-08-2006, 11:04 PM okay i know this is slightly different but i used this info to install my greddy evo 2 exhuast , same deal and just like everyone else i broke my gasket so i had to order a new one
cost is $ 10 .00 from the dealer , also suggest getting a longer rubber hanger so it will fit hand right.
tyrantcold 02-10-2006, 02:05 AM okay so today my exhuast moves over to the left of the exhuast hole while driving and begins melting the rear spoiler. I stoped at a home depot and bought a couple Metal GEAR CLAMPS/BANDS then used the bracket right next to the exhuast to properly center it ,
now it doesnt budge a bit from center but i had to spend 2 hours repairing my bumper , and i just resprayed it last sunday :(
Prototype_xB 05-30-2006, 08:36 PM someone scared to get their hands dirty?? Haha, jk
tyrantcold 05-30-2006, 10:58 PM i get my hands too dirty , ive resprayed my front and rear lips twice and im gonna do it again this weekend cause i burned the lip ...Again. :(
k_dub 07-04-2006, 12:03 AM That was nice with wat u did wit the Exhaust.

k_dub 07-08-2006, 09:08 AM This is still sick!!
Can i get an for around 300 hun, an under?
Holla!!!!!!!
mad-sciontist 07-15-2006, 05:21 AM Those rubber thingies are a b%#%# on a brand new Scion!!! I was under my car for god knows how long trying to pry the stock exhaust hangers out of there, so my advice, is lube the crap out of them!!
USFxA 09-10-2006, 04:38 AM i bought my DC sports exhuast for $265 from Lastlookcustoms just before they changed the price on them.
wagonbldr 09-11-2006, 02:17 AM Did your DC Sport muffler come with 2 inserts (silencers) like my RS 2.0s did. I use the larger of the silencers to give it a good tone, and yet isn't too loud on long trips. Have tried the quiter one, but didn't like it. Could run it without, but is a little too noisey for me. Also keep an eye on the welds on the muffler. Some of us RS 2.0 owners have had the tips break off because of faulty welds. There is a post about it with photos of where to look. Mine is still OK, while another local RS 2.0 has had to have his replaced. Other than that, I love the sound of mine.
OakToddler 12-28-2006, 04:05 AM Is the problem of faulty welds only with the special RS exhausts or all DC Sports exhausts.
I have one coming and reading this is a real bummer.
Thanks for the install instructions!!!!
wagonbldr 12-28-2006, 05:56 AM The only ones I remember right off hand were the RS ones.
OakToddler 12-28-2006, 09:28 PM My DC came with no silencers. I wonder if I could get a silencer and if it would fit?
I just got it installed at Meineke in Ramsey NJ for 80 bucks today!
The owner did the job and he liked the slant on the exhaust.
He did suggest I replace the clamp and gasket for the rear muffler assembly.
He said everything was fine (under 7k miles) but if I got the clamp and gasket then he would put them in free.
I guess thats helpful for any future problems with melting bumpers?
chapascion 08-24-2007, 05:32 AM Wow! Thanks for the write up. It was all I needed to get my exhaust installed.
My bolt is rusted to the clamp, I can't even get that off.
Sky_Box 04-03-2009, 11:44 PM Hi, I just installed DF210's and I have the DC Sports Exhaust SCS6401. My question is: does anyone have this setup or a similar setup? When I make right turns on certain roads/driveways the exhaust seems to make a painful noise, like its flexing the exhaust, but its not scrapping. Any help? Thanks in advance!
way2fast 04-04-2009, 05:25 AM DC makes some nice gear. i bet it sounds nice too.

I hear a sound when I go over bumpy pavement, I have no idea what it is though.

I have the same setup pretty much, but S-Techs, for almost 2 years, no noise like that at all. It started when you installed the springs? are you sure it's coming from the exhaust?

I have the same setup pretty much, but S-Techs, for almost 2 years, no noise like that at all. It started when you installed the springs? are you sure it's coming from the exhaust? There's a sound coming from the middle to rear area and only when the springs move up and down. It's really hard to explain.
bbszero 04-07-2009, 01:54 AM is it a busted hanger?
is it a busted hanger? The hangers are fine. The exhaust feels sturdy and everything. I would hope that the rear suspension doesn't rub up against something when it flexes.
burstaneurysm 04-07-2009, 03:27 PM You might need to tweak the hangers a bit. I think the piping is hitting the rear suspension somewhere.
Sky_Box 04-14-2009, 03:09 AM It started when I installed my springs. Thats what I was thinking ... the hangers... how would I tweak it? I've heard of getting shorter hangers, but Im not sure which to get?
You might need to tweak the hangers a bit. I think the piping is hitting the rear suspension somewhere.Yeah it has to be something like that. I'm surprised its not that common. I need a camera underneath so I can see whats hitting while driving hah.
Okay so the end of the exhaust pipe is hitting the cut out on the bumper. The hangers let the exhaust swing back and forth too much. How can I keep the muffler from swinging on bumpy roads?
