Hahaha, that was good! But hey, Mazda's are nice cars, I drive one right now...sure I can't wait to get rid of it, but that's because it's waaaay too old. Anyways, the reason why people are paying around 18K is because:
1. They get automatic, which is an extra option
2. They live in states that have higher sales tax
3. They might add more options.
I'm planning to pay almost 19K for a stock tC with Auto since the sales tax in California is 8.5%

I've yet to see a tC in real life, so if it turns out to be ugly, I'll also be getting the Mazda3 instead.
And beings that the mazda3 is based of the euro focus- Id say no. The Focus is a great package- but thier in no replacement for refinement!!. My focus was hitting 60K and was out of breath!!!

a bone stock tc should come out to about that same price (17500). I did some calculations and a 5spd manual tC (800 less than the auto) without side airbags ($650 option) comes out to about 16500. this should include the 515 delivery, processing, and handling fee. tackle on our state tax here in california 7.25% and it comes out to about 17700.
tell them you know msrp is 15950. if things don't work out for you in texas, you can always come to California and buy one!
hey RussianTC, you must live in SF right? that's where the state tax is 8.5%. i was surprised but it varies from county to county. try hitting up some dealers in the middle of nowhere... i.e. vacaville, fairfield. CA state tax is only 7.25% that'll save you at least 200 bucks.

If the tc was ugly why would u go to a even uglier car?? IMO that car is ___! it looks like it should of been a 2 door coupe more then a 4 door....

Well, the 3 looks unique. It took me a few days to "adjust" to the tC's styling, while I liked the 3 right away. The main thing that I don't like about the tC is the front -- it looks very non-aggressive and plain. Looks are entirely subjective, so look at it however you want to.
And beings that the mazda3 is based of the euro focus- Id say no. The Focus is a great package- but thier in no replacement for refinement!!. My focus was hitting 60K and was out of breath!!!
The 2005 European Ford Focus will be based on the Mazda3/Volvo S40 platform, not the other way around. In Europe, the Focus is quite popular. By quite, I mean VERY.
The European Focus will not be sold in the U.S.
I do agree that the States version is a POS.

Hey, thanks, that's a good idea! Are you sure though that the taxes aren't counted where your car is registered (where you live) but where it is sold?

I really like the way the 3 looks as well, especially the @$$ end of it.
If you can wait, I would suggest that you test drive them both. The Mazda3 has been getting good reviews. Having driven my friend's 3, I must agree that it is the best small car on the market. I'd still check out the tC before considering new cars though.

Here's my thought on dealer add ons...
They put them on... if they want to sell the car they can take them right back off.
The *only* ones that I would even consider would be CAI, TRD springs and TRD exhaust... but I still feel ripped off buying/having them install it (I'm fairly handy mechanically).
I even have the dealers take their badging off the cars I buy. I didn't pay them to advertise for them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the whole idea of Scion is that you can order exactly what options you want on your car, wait a couple weeks (months now?), and get exactly the car you want. Are dealers not allowing you to place an order?
I don't know how CA works, but in OH the sales tax on cars is calculated based on which county you register the car, not where you buy it. Otherwise a lot of dealers in Cleveland would be outta business.

hey birdy-
i checked out the scion site for dealers in dallas... there's 12 of them listed! that's a lot. did you try to call around and get a second quote? you'll probably find something that's to your liking at one of those places.

Don't get your hopes up with Mazda...
They toyed with me for over a month on my Mazda3 and I finally walked. ____ poor sales and service. I ended up writing a letter to the dealership owners, the BBB, and the headquarters of Mazda North america and Ford.
I took my business back to Toyota.. err.. Scion (bought a rav4 last year.. now totalled)
Just wait for the tC... or you can give up and make someone else's day.

Agree.. The dealer prices for options are INSANE thats why you don't get any... Don't fall in the trap of the dealers ordering a car loaded to force you to buy it loaded. If you need to compromise on maybe purchasing the overpriced mats that is onw thing bu all other options can be gotten aftermarket for 1/2 or less of the price.
Besides.. The TC comes FULLY LOADED.. The options you can add aren't even options on other cars.. Decals, neon lights, chrome pedals... all useless....
After Taxes the car is going to cost between 18-19k a similar spec Mazda 3 before taxes was around 20k..
Don't go insane... BE INSANE...

Well, it is not only the price on the options. There is some dealers charging close to $500 in documentation fees here in the west coast of florida, and well over $800 in doc. fees in some dealers in miami. With those fees the tc without options is well over the $17k (for the 5 spd.) and over $18k (for the auto) not including tax.
I saw this when searching the inventory of this dealers on their websites.

I was considering the Mazda3 also, since I haev a friend that works for Ford and I could probably get a decent discount on the car.....but list price on one loaded was around $19,000 or more....$21,000 if I wanted a Navigation unit.

Taxes are calculated based on where you register your car.
For instance, I bought my car in CA and registered in NV. If I opted to not pay the dealership the taxes, I would have had to pay the NV DMV the taxes when I registered the car. Instead, I payed them at the dealership in the finance and payed $40 more than I would have had to if I bought the car in NV.
Otherwise, everyone would buy their cars in OR and drive them home tax free.
You don't think Uncle Sam is that stupid do you?
Also, when you buy a car via a 'private seller', you pay the tax to the DMV. Your lender will usually pay them and just finance the tax just like it's done at the dealership.

The 3 is a good car, Might have gotten one if they were a two door instead of a four door. They handel great, are are VERY fun to drive. It'll be very intersting to see what Mazda Speed does when they release the turbocharged 3.
However the Tc was the right car for me. I loved the duel sunroofs, 3 door hatch look, and the price was about 4K less then the 3 I was looking at. Of course that 3 had HID headlights, stereo controls on the stearing wheel, and a manutronic transmittion.
Like everything I think it is a sign of taste.
& who cares that they are owned by ford? Do we say dodge has any better quality cause they are now owned by germans? & what about those germans owning a large part of mitsubishi? I don't see people trashing Mitsubish cause they used to be owned (in part) by an americian company.
If the car is a good car I'll drive it.... I'd be more worried about the cars being assembled here in the us than a japanese car being built over there by a cmpany partially owned by ford.

If any dealers are "gouging" customers they should be reported to Toyota Motor Sales USA immediately.

One of the large dealers in Cincy has a ton of 3's in stock, and they're offering $2k off MSRP. That pretty much brings it in line with the tC. Most on Edmunds are reporting around $300-500 over invoice, making it a little more than the tC. Just FYI.

the dealers that are adding $3 to 4k worth of stuff on scions will eventually backfire on them. its okay if you do it to your demonstrator, but on actual inventory is down right stupid. they're missing the whole point of scion.
we added the trd exhaust and lip spoiler on our tC and we'll lower it with the trd springs next week, but you won't see us do that to the tC that are coming in.
