TOKYO (XFN-ASIA) - Toyota Motor Corp will launch a Lexus luxury sports car in Japan, the US and Europe in 2009 to enhance the brand's image, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported without citing sources.
The two-seater coupe will sell for more than 15 mln yen (about $131,500), and will likely be Toyota's most expensive. It will eclipse the Lexus LS, which is expected to sell for roughly 10 mln yen in Japan after its release in September.
The report said the Lexus vehicle will be based on the LF-A concept car, which Toyota exhibited at the 2005 Detroit motor show. It will be powered by a newly developed 5-liter V-10 engine and equipped with technologies and new materials that Toyota has developed through Formula One racing.

YAY!
Now that's what I call a halo vehicle. Ferrari, Porsche, Lambo - LOOK OUT!
I love it - a supercar with a decent radio, good ride, and reliability.

I can seee it now, "Toyota released their new super car today.... and by the way, its a hybrid too!"
 next to compete Ferrari and Lamborghini will try and do the same thing, and maybe even MB and BMW would jump on that band wagon, and then finally we might be able to get rid of the gas guzzler tax! lol

Most likely Surpass. Im not to overly fond of the LF-A concepts styling, so I hope the changes are many.

not too sound pessimistic, but as far as the 130k+ price, this car has an uphill battle...
proven cars such as the 911 turbo, NSX, Aston Martin, Corvette Z06, BMW M6, upcoming GT-R, etc.. are going for about as much if not less, if anything this will have to appeal to a very specific customer

Hard to say... there are MANY times the number of cars over $100,000 than there were a decade ago. As a flagship, low-volume model this will get a LOT of attention for Lexus and if the car can live up to the typical Lexus perfection it might just be worth the dough.
I'm already wondering if I will be able to afford one in a couple years. I can always dream. :)

Honda actually had plans to do this first, but toyota followed.
Nsx will become a supercar with a v10 as well, it should be interesting to see which one is the better car for the money.

This car was anounced well before the next generation NSX. If anything, Toyota forced Honda into doing a new NSX becasue they were not planning on doing one after the end on current generation production.
What the honda did do, was guarantee that this car keeps its V10 engine

NXS is a nice car, but by no means is it a supercar.
 I truly hope Toyota doesn't allow the GT to fall into "that" catagory.
I'm guessing with a $100K+ price tag its going to be beyond the premium "sports car", and hopefully into the Elite SuperCars domain :!:

Unless you know something i don't, the v10 nsx idea was released in 2000/2001 and the idea started to take into concept form in 2004.
Well the honda nsx v10 is honda's answer to enter supercar terriory, so in reality the nsx will become a supercar and this lexus/toyota will be a supercar as well..At least from the looks of it.
I cant wait to see the final design/specs of both cars.

And unless the NSX is upgraded "somehow" to SuperCar status, I doubt its in the same class as the GT's going to be. A V10 alone doesn't mean it belongs in the SuperCar realm.

1) V-10's fall into a few categories: supercar (Porsche GT-10), muscle car (viper), and luxury performance car (BMW M5). I would consider the NSX an economy-supercar or something along those lines, (japanese muscle car?). It's styling is WAY more supercar than this Lexus, it's similar to a corvette crossed with an Enzo, But come on, the Bugatti Veyron has a quad turbo W-16 with 1001 hp and hits 250+mph... I don't see this Lexus or the NSX finding these numbers. Although that doesn't count them out as supercars, it's all about how they are marketed and what the reviewers think.
2) The styling... It looks like a combination of a TC (the roof), a miata (front end) and a Mercedes SLK or an RX-8 (whole look/feel). Bottom line on the styling is that it's decent, but not great. Supercars are supposed to be over the top, look at the Ferrari FXX or the previously mentioned Bugatti Veyron. This Lexus actually comes across as kind of cheap-looking in comparison to what else is available...
3) Performance: Until I see some figures, I wouldn't hold my breath for 200mph. maybe 200 without wind resistance, but that doesn't look like a 200mph machine. Think Jaguar XJ220, McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo...
4) The wheels: I love them, they look like they might be angled to help cool the brakes or something, I'd always wondered if there was a reason they don't design wheels to do that..
Overall I'm not impressed, if it's supposed to be a supercar, it's definitely going to fail, if it's supposed to be a performance luxury car, I think it will be incredibly successful. Mercedes and BMW have this market going well, and I love their cars for styling and performance, but I'd never buy one because of their notorious unreliability. When this car comes out, I hope to see it marketed as the reliable and affordable luxury performance car.

**sigh**
once more...
**rant on**
1) the NSX came out in 1991. The next generation NSX will feature an F1 based V10, Just like this car. 500+ hp, over 200mph...look for it. The Bugatti needs 1001 hp because its a f'king whale.
2)The picture shown was a concept car. This is not the final styling, and even if it was, lexus isnt know for over the top design. Where the hell did you pull RX-8 and Miata from ?!?!
3) Carbon fibre chassis..target weight 1200kg. And again it will have at least 500hp...it will do 200mph (without an electronic limiter)
4)Those wheels look like crap. That statement alone made me want to disregard your whole post.
I dont get why people think lexus will be trying to sell 400,000 copies of this car. This thins will sell for at least 100,000 bucks, it will be a low run, limited production halo car, not a f'kin camry

WtF... are some people talking about... :tap:
1. This dudes comparing $500,000+ vehicles and yelling at Toyota to match to those performance specs all while keeping the price range of $100,000+/-. :eyebrow:
^ In the real World things don't work like that. You can't expect the NSX to matchup to the $1+ million dollar car (Bugatti Veyron), that is unless your willing to buy a fleet of NSXs and mod'm accordingly.
My point is we shouldn't expect the Lexus GT# to smoke cars like the Bugatti because the Veyron costs a minimum of 10 times more.
(In my opinion the Lexus GT# should/will atleast keep up and perhaps with a couple of mod's  be able to beat the Bugatti's & Ferrari's) :come:
My hope the Lexus GT# will be a class above the "average" spectrum (giving the $500,000 rides something to ponder), which will need to be race proven and shown through its styling & reliability. :ponder:
On a side note, I'll "agree to a degree" (specifically when looking @ the GT-500s frontend) that SuperCars are suppose to be over the top when it comes to styling & performance. I think its obvious that aussie hasn't seen the rear because the GT# has got an awesome tail!
At the end of the day, styling is what will spark the interest and determine if its going to be a classic or not.

Would be nice to see this when it goes into complete production.
If this was coming out this year, it would be for sure competiting against the Lamborghini Gallardo, Porsche 997 Turbo, Ferrari F430 and a couple other things.
For a $115k Lexus, your sort of getting bang for your buck.
It will for sure be in the 190 mph territory or just might hit 200 mph.
One thing it be nice if they make the new SC and have similar specs so it can compete against Bentley Continental GT / BMW M6 / Mercedes CL. Thing is they wont, oh well 155 mph is still nice.

I never understood the need for top speed. Sure, you get bragging rights and so forth, but its kind of pointless since hardly any track is made, at least in comparison to other tracks, for that kind of speed. Chances are it will be in the 180-200mph range. If i remember correctly, the new nsx is rumored to be able to hit 195mph. It has the power to hit higher obviously, so i'm sure this lexus will be right there with the nsx since both of those cars are going to be running as competition with each other. Not the older nsx's, the v10 one coming out.

^^ lol where to begin.... That's actually perfect. I saw the TG episode where they tested this car. They were impressed by it for the most part... but they basically said that at the price set the company is looking to get for them...and the stipulations of purchase... that even TG seriously doubts they will sell a single one of these things. I think Lexus/Toyota shot themselves straight out of the water with their marketing on the car. period. complete stamp of approval of FAIL. I mean seriously... if you've got the loot for a high end ride... are ya gonna buy a Lexus with lots of purchase stipulations? or a Ferrari? (which by the way is a lot cheaper then the asking price of the Lexus)
