View Full Version : Oil Dipstick
iglcrair 06-30-2004, 04:57 PM In all the vehicles I have owned previously, the dipsticks have been metal strips... But with my xA, its this little plastic doohicky... Im afraid im gonna break and/or melt this stupid thing. Is anyone aware of any manufacturer who produces a metal one for Scion or something from Toyota, an OEM replacement of some sort?
DJ_X_Trodinaire 06-30-2004, 06:38 PM
i havent checked the oil yet in my xB
gotta examine this!

Look for a company by the name of Lokar
Or maybe STR might make one eventually
scionscorpion 06-30-2004, 06:41 PM yeah check ebay.com :) just type in scion xa and check the price between 50-100 or so ......
i saw couple of stiks there
DJ_SpaRky 06-30-2004, 07:06 PM 710 Stick???
iglcrair 06-30-2004, 07:11 PM Ok, i need a dipstick for an xA... Lokar does not make one for the xA. I can see that they do make dipsticks, true. But I dont own a late model Ford, so that fact does me no good. Does anyone know where a dipstick for the Scion xA can be found?
Distracted_Thinker 06-30-2004, 10:08 PM Yeah I saw the same thing dont really care for it.
mikochu 06-30-2004, 11:02 PM I doubt it'd melt or break...unless you forcefully tried to break it... If you wanted a metal dipstick, you should've bought a Hyundai Accent...
Back_In_Black_xA 06-30-2004, 11:03 PM Do you really think Toyota would have put it there if it were going to break. Leave it, its fine.
kdanie 07-01-2004, 12:11 AM Yes, it works, won't break or melt but it sure is CHEEZEY!!!
I will have to look into fabing a metal "710" stick.

iglcrair 07-01-2004, 04:14 AM My point exactly. Its CHEESY. I dont want a plastic engine, i dont want any of the pieces to be plastic if i can help it. I might break it simply out of frustration that Toyota was so cheap that a strip of metal 1/4" wide and 2 feet long was too expensive to consider...
its_ikon 07-01-2004, 07:20 PM the plastic piece is only where you grab it with your hand. the rest is metal and you won't break it unless you want to.

so...what are you gonna do about that intake manifold? That's plastic...

the whole thing is plastic. i got scared the first time i changed the '710' . i checked the level by pulling out the zip racer strip. the whole thing is plastic (and yellow).
i know they were cutting weight everywhere they could when building these scions, but please give me some comfort of a metal dip stick.
mikochu 07-01-2004, 08:11 PM what are the benefits of metal dipsticks versus plastic?
chewd0g 07-02-2004, 12:17 PM I don't see why it's a big deal.
claffeyb 07-02-2004, 12:56 PM I think that you need to replace the plastic air bags with metal ones. You wouldn't want them to break off or anything.
chewd0g 07-02-2004, 01:00 PM
kdanie 07-02-2004, 02:55 PM As I said before, the plastic stick is fully functional. There is no problem with it other than the cheeze factor, and I don't expect those of you that like it to buy a metal stick with aluminum handle when I fab up a few.....

iglcrair 07-04-2004, 05:55 PM My point is not that its not functional, but that its unattractive and silly. If it were a golf-cart or a lawnmower I wouldnt care. But this is a car. I use it to slalom through traffic at 85 MPH... I dont like the thought that part of my engine is nothing more than recycled 20oz. Pepsi bottles.
If you fab up some real metal ones, im in.
Back_In_Black_xA 07-04-2004, 09:53 PM Plastic is unattractive? Who the hell can see the dipstick unless you pull it out. Maybe you should get metal bumpers for your car so you don't have cheesy plastic showing.
The plastic parts of the 1NZ-FE, AZ-series, and ZZ-series engine are superior to the old metal parts. The plastic intake manifold doesn't get as hot or conduct heat like the metal ones did. It's lighter and probably easier to produce and cheaper.
kdanie 07-04-2004, 10:09 PM Well, some people have to argue about everything.....
The plastic dip stick is not supperior to a metal dipstick but it is cheaper to make.
The plastic intake is also cheaper and MAY keep the intake air cooler but that's pure guessing, nobody has ever measured the air temp in the intake. Will the plastic make more power than a well designed and fabricated aluminum manifold? NO!!! It's designed to reduce cost and meet the HP level of the stock engine-no more.
I picked up 3 dipsticks at the local pic-a-part yesterday, I will fab an aluminum handle and try it out to see how it works. If all goes well, I may offer a few for sale to board members.

If the metal dipstick mod increases my hp by 10, then I'm in, hehehe j/km couldn't resist
