Does anyone know how many 2004 xBs are coming out?
I'm curious about the rarity of our cars.

as many as they can make. it's not a limited production car. most $12,000 2004 model cars aren't.

According to Toyota 1,159 sold in August, 3,124 total through the end of August:

http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/030903/law075_1.html

In 2001 (latest stats I could Google up) Toyota produced 64,827 bBs. (http://www.autointell.com/asian_companies/toyota_motor/business/toyota-domestic-production-2001.htm) I've read elsewhere that the Takaoka plant is running near capacity already. I doubt Toyota would starve the Japanese market to supply the U.S. as I'm sure they make a (much) higher profit in Japan. So I'm sure they could sell plenty. I just wonder where they'd come from.

Maybe Toyota's betting on a drop in JDM bB sales, with the U.S. market to take up the slack. If so, wild guess ... maybe 25,000 this year?

it's kind of interesting. if they can't even make enough xBs to keep up with california's demand, what will they do when they start selling to texas, new york, etc in february? and what about next june? and keep in mind that they will still be selling in california at those times. so it's going to get really crazy for toyota in the next few months. and don't worry, i'm sure they are making a nice profit. toyota is so efficient and well organized in japan. they can make cars like the xB for just a couple thousand dollars. but i think it's more a matter of getting kids to buy the cars at this point, rather than selling a lot of expensive cars, as far as scion is concerned.

but think about it. if they have sold this many xBs and most people haven't even heard of scion and if they have, they think they're ugly...what will happen when people start to accept them and realize how good they are as a cheap efficient daily driver? they are either going to have to raise the price or import a crazy amount to the US to meet demand. maybe i'm wrong, but that's the way i think it's going to go.

i don't think they will want to raise the price. eventually the demand will taper off and even out so there could be a surplus of scions. toyota will just need to be careful because the car market changes everyday.

yeah but it's cool because if there is a surplus in california, they can just ship them to other states and sell them off there. i just have a feeling than instead of tapering off, the car will become more and more popular, especially considering it's price and how useful it is. cars like the mini and the 350z can only sell so many units because of their size and cost, so they taper off quickly after the initial surge of buyers upon release.

I do see it becoming popular. It's already becoming kind of a cult car, too. A car like the Miata, one that the ovners love, and that's a kind of statement, rather than just being "a car". Look at all the activity on these boards, already, and the car is only available in a limited area, and only has been out for a few months. And the automotive pres is giving them a lot of good hype, too. I just can't wait to get mine, which will be around christmas.

Hopefully someone will bomb japan ( at least all the plants that they make the scions @...at night so there is no one there... :D ) and they won't be able to make any more xbs....they already have a huge surpless of xa's. And then we will be the few the proud...the Scion owners, and then we will be like royalty and people will pull over to allow us to pass and everything will be in harmony and we will leave in peace...except for the scion plant of course. :D

I read somewhere that they have the plants doing 12 hour shifts day and night to keep up with production and they are falling behind. I wonder if they plan on moving the plant...

Sales figures updated through September:

June: 900 xB, 451 xA
July: 1065 xB, 554 xA
August: 1159 xB, 654 xA
September: 970 xB, 661 xA

Total: 4094 xB, 2320 xA

Toyota blames "limited availability" of the xB for the sales drop ... judging from posts on this and other boards xBs do seem to be hard to come by.

On the plus side, the xA is catching on :D

the initial thought was that the xA would sell better than the xB... those in Ca have proven them wrong... that could be the reason for the availability problem with the xB

the reason why it might be a little popular is just the uniqueness. i think the xa looks like a 4 door SI. i went to the dealer again today, im waiting for MY black xb.

They've ramped production up to where they're making scions 24/7. crazy stuff.

someone should post how many camrys get sold each month. it will put things into perspective. ok, i will.

according to car and driver magazine, toyota sold 434,000 camrys in the united states last year (2002), making it the best-selling car in the country.

that's 36166 a month.

another interesting fact is that of the 434,000 cars, 356,000 of them were sold at longo toyota in el monte, ca.

i thought they sell more than 50,000 a year?

eric_m
12-09-2003, 04:35 PM
ok, i was joking about the camry thing, but seriously... longo is the biggest dealer and they sell more toyotas, lexus, and scions than any other toyota dealer in the US. they have a crazy inventory of cars, and are pretty cool when it comes to getting a deal on a toyota or lexus. however, if you buy a scion there, it will be the same price as if you buy it anywhere else due to the pure pricing thing.

toyota really did sell 434,000 camrys last year. crazy, huh?
