Default Dissapointed [by taxes and dealer fees]...but not in the car

Just got back from a tC test drive. It was a flitn mica auto with cd changer. The car was great...more power than I expected for an auto, smooth, lots of features, great styling....even better color! But...I start talking to the dealer and find out that a base tC with nothing in it other than the standard options comes out to about $18,500 after tax and dealer fees. I found that to be dissapointing. With the options I wanted, which were only a spoilter, auto dim mirror, security and sport pedals...and i was over 20K out the door. Needless to say, with a "base price" of $16,495 I thought I would end up with a total out the door around 18.5K...Anyways...not sure if the tC will be in my future at this price

....that's true for every car you buy. not mention if you buy a 16.5k corolla S, you will pay the same thing too. i never saw a corolla S in dealer lot go under 17K. do the math, 18.5k is actually not a bad deal at all.

hey, since we're talking about sales tax anyways, how does it really apply to cars?

i would think the tax wherever you buy it is what you pay right? my parents went up to fairfield from san jose (about an hour drive) on their way to sacramento, and stopped by a dealership. asked about some stuff and when they go home, they told me the dealership said you get charged sales tax for wherever you register the car. the difference in sales tax is 7.35 vs 8.25. we should be saving a few bills on the car right? is this dealer full of sh*t or what?

it doesn't make the tiniest bit of sense to me.

anywho, if you (UnFocused) can refer me to a dealership in Oregon, preferably further south, we'd consider doing that

my dad might go to hillsboro in a few months.

*Yells at fiance* "Hey honey, pack your bags we're moving to Oregon!"

I pay $850 for a two bedroom just barely 1100 sq ft. apartment in a mid class neighborhood. And min wage here is $5.75

Of course sales tax here is only 6% so can't complain too much.

it doesn't matter where you buy your scion, the state you buy in sends the taxes they collect to where you regester the car then you pay the difference if any when you register it

i'd understand that, so if i bought it in oregon and registered it in california, i'd pay the difference when i register it, right?

but what about buying it in california and registering in california. the only difference being counties. the normal sales tax here should be 7.25% but in certain counties its 8.25% or even 8.5%. does what you said still apply here? cause that's what the dealer told us.

Yes, that's what I've been told too. You pay the tax of the county where you live.
....

The tax is assessed by the state the car is registered in. It doesn't matter where you buy it. it matters where you register it. CA does have one odd quirk and that is that some counties have their own tax. From a comsumer perspective, it looks as if you are paying a higher state sales tax based on where you buy, but in reality, it is the county that gets the extra dough. thus, a CA resident can save some money by buying in a lower tax county.

hmmm, NY has that county thing going on too. I know it's 8.5% in Long Island, but I believe NYC is only 7. something. Hmmmm. I live in NYC so I guess I'd register my car here - or my parents house upstate since insurance would be cheaper (I'm a college student, I don't have a real home anymore ). I guess I should figure out the county stuff.

In OH sales tax changes by county. Cleveland is 8%, Columbus 6.75%, Cincy 7%, etc. For vehicles it goes by where the car is registered. Otherwise everybody in Cleveland would drive 30 minutes to save 1.5% on their sales tax ($250 or so on a tC).

Sales tax sucks.. but excise tax is worse.. in Maine we have to pay Excise tax every year. I'll be paying about 800 in sales tax and 400 in excise tax when I register the car.

Next year excise tax will drop to a little over 300. Gah.

in any case it is the county that you live in that gets county taxes so it doesnt matter if you buy in another county you will still pay your county taxes.

Nope, it doesn't work that way. You pay taxes on the county in which you title the car. If you buy in another county and the dealer doesn't charge you for the county in which you title the vehicle the state will come after you for the difference.

Of course, you could set up a mailing address in a cheap county, but since the rates only vary from 7.25 (cow counties) to 8.5 (San Francisco) the maximum savings are about $190 and more likely in the $75 range. If you have a buddy in the cheap county who can forward your mail for a few months you will come out ahead, but if you have to rent a PO box it isn't worth it.
