well for one you should really do some more research before you just plunk down a THOUSAND dollars into a sound system without knowing what you're getting into. Also you are putting yourself in a perfect spot to be taken advantage of because you haven't researched the things yourself, and a shady audio shop would see you coming from a mile away. Mandos at Elemental Designs is a great guy, and I'd recommend you seek his council...

I would say for the best price to noticeable performance ratio would be a new head unit (your deck) because that is where the sound quality and power to the speakers is coming from, and it's also probably the easiest to replace as well. Next in line I would have to say a good subwoofer, JL is always good but there are tons of brands out there ranging from useless crap with a speaker wire and a magnet attatched all the way up to glorious sound quality, and really, the best gauge to go by is that you get what you pay for.

The stock speakers in the doors and the rears are fine unless you really want better midbass response without the tingy highs when the wattage is increased. There are adapters to connect a subwoofer to the stock stereo (called Pre-Amp Out Adapters) although I have no idea why you would want to keep the original head unit, it pales in comparison to the cheapest aftermarket unit you could find.

I would say with $1,000 dollars, I would get a nice $200-$300 head unit that doesn't have some gimicky stuff thrown in (like a 2" color screen, flashy display, flashy buttons etc *cough*sony xplod*cough*) - a nice single 10 or 12" subwoofer depending on how serious you want to make your box, whether it be custom fiberglass or just a big wooden box taking up most of you trunk space, and a good 500W RMS or more (NOTE: RMS WATTAGE, NOT PEAK WATTAGE) Mono Amplifier to push the subwoofer and call it a day.

wow..thats alot of great info...i was planning on saving up for some kinda double din screen for the deck maybe for christmas or my birthday in february...but if you say its absolutely necessary then i duno i might just have to check it out..and i dont like how the factory speakers distort at around 58 on the stock deck...thats my reason for wanting to replace them all around

the distortion is not just the speakers, but also the head unit. When I took out my stock head unit and ran my alpine 9856 on everything else that was stock, the stock speakers could go much louder than on the stock head unit before they would get distorted, and it was a different type of distortion. Instead of crackling they were pingy and tinny sounding with the mids and highs. Also on the new head unit, I could turn the volume up to the point of making my ears ring before they were distorted, and any higher and they started to sound tinny.

Any normal person who just listens to music as they're crusing and just wants to FEEL the music would be more than happy with a new head unit and an amped subwoofer running the stock side speakers. Once you replace the stock speakers it starts getting expensive since you would want to find high quality component speakers for the front powered by clean amplifiers (preferably bi-amped) and a seperate amp for your subwoofer unless you find a huge amp to power it all with a sub-line out.

I'm running CDT component speakers up front with 200W per side, alpine coax rears running off the head unit, and a 10" alpine subwoofer fed by a 500W RMS amp. That setup alone runs an MSRP of a bit over $2400 - obviously it can be found cheaper elsewhere, but that gives you an idea. I think you would be more than happy with a new head unit, an amp for the sub and a subwoofer in a box. The MSRP of those three off the Alpine site is $1,010. Crutchfield pricing for that setup is about $800 including money for wiring.

yeah, I know what head unit with the built in video that can play DVD's you're talking about - like I said though, unless you are really, really serious about sitting in your car for 2 hours watching a DVD on a $2,000+ video screen, have too much money to blow and want something that will turn heads, or want navigation, any screen connected to the head unit that does something other than text just adds cost that could be better spent elsewhere.

Wow-ing someone with sound quality is much harder to do than throwing in a practically useless video player on the dash board.

image dynamics and DLS get my vote I don't have any experience with eD's products...

if you go into a shop sayin you have 1000 for a system and ask for their recommendations you're gonna get RAPED.

I can't offer any help LaMbO_tC. Seeing how I spent $1,400 just on my HU alone.

That's pretty much the standard price to have a Pioneer D2 installed.... It has Navi, but NO, it doesn't drive for me.
