View Full Version : your official reminder video.. why street tires suck.. Tamago 07-26-2006, 10:18 PM http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=532861506043340903&q=tamago :P  Tamago 07-27-2006, 06:02 PM needless to say i'll be back on race rubber soon ;) evosky 07-27-2006, 11:43 PM heh. im wondering, since i am interesting in doing a track day or autoX event, is it almost necessary to invest in race tires ? or is it just totally up to you and your commitment ? nice run by the way, looked clean. soros151 07-28-2006, 05:00 AM I really don't understand how can you figure out that track pattern, I don't know when I have to go right or left when there is one cone only at front... really... Max 07-28-2006, 05:07 AM Just out of curiosity... Did you hit some cones, and if so was that the reason you stopped early? Did you even stop early? Were there mechanical difficulties? Dragging cone? Tamago 07-28-2006, 10:50 AM when i came thru the finish i slowed down.. that "stop" early in the run was a spin. Race tires aren't required, but they are certainly addictive.. once you race on real rubber it is very painful to go back to regular tires. as far as the track pattern goes... it takes practice. i've been racing for over 2 years now and i still get lost sometimes :) soros151 07-28-2006, 06:40 PM What happens when you get lost? Does someone tells you you are going in the wrong direction or do you just take whatever route you have available? evosky 07-28-2006, 07:07 PM yeah, just watching the vids of various autoX'ers makes me wonder how you remember the track route ... @_@ racecaryaya 07-29-2006, 12:13 PM The track route wasn't to bad, if you know what the different cones mean: There are pointer cones and series of cones to guide your way. You also learn the course by walking the line a few times before you drive it. As for blaming that on street tires: That was over-driving if I've ever seen it. You got behind, you over corrected then you got sideways. I see you jerking the wheel going into slaloms rather than pushing and pulling the wheel. Smoothness matters most. I've only raced in six events (in 2004) on R-compounds and I've never spun while on street tires (and I've done well in stock classes which allow R compounds). Don't blame the tires on that one. soros151 07-29-2006, 12:30 PM  Tamago 07-29-2006, 04:04 PM The track route wasn't to bad, if you know what the different cones mean: There are pointer cones and series of cones to guide your way. Don't blame the tires on that one. ;) i was over driving my car.. i've been racing for over 2 years on r comps, and going to BAD street tires was just a rude reminder. as far as jerking the wheel, again, the Rcomps loved it.. this was my last run of the day, and was well off the usual "within1/10th's" of first in my class, so i really did push harder than i should. it's for fun, no? not a career.. so i wanted to see what the ragged edge looked like on these tires. and i found it. another issue i was having that day was an unproven suspension setup. i've made my own camber shims for the rear of the car, and had not yet tested them on the track. i've since adjusted the shimstock and will be running a little less camber and less toe-in in the rear to help with rotation of the car. as it sat, my rear camber was about .5deg more than my front.. not a good deal on an already understeer-happy car.. i'm running no toe and 2.5deg neg camber in the front now and around -2deg in the rear with about 1/8" toe in.. the problem with a trailing arm axle is that toe changes during compression of the suspension. so if you add camber to your car, as the car sits static, when you compress your rear axle, some of that camber is lost to toe in.. good for straight line stability, but that's not at all where the suspension is getting compressed. . i blame the street tires for my horrible driving haha.. please.. FYI they're Dunlop Direzza DZ101's.. i won't be buying them again anytime soon. racecaryaya 07-30-2006, 03:49 PM i was over driving my car.. i've been racing for over 2 years on r comps, and going to BAD street tires was just a rude reminder. as far as jerking the wheel, again, the Rcomps loved it.. this was my last run of the day, and was well off the usual "within1/10th's" of first in my class, so i really did push harder than i should. it's for fun, no? not a career.. so i wanted to see what the ragged edge looked like on these tires. That makes a lot of sense! Going from Rcomps to regular street tires is a tricky thing to do! Good luck proving out your shims! Tamago 07-31-2006, 10:51 AM thank you, sir Tamago 12-01-2006, 10:46 PM shameless bump.. AgentRice 12-01-2006, 10:53 PM dude havent seen round fort laud in a while whats up Tamago 12-01-2006, 10:59 PM been in WA, job up there. Tamago 12-12-2006, 11:47 AM yeah i've since learned that Prodigy+Autocross=me overdriving my car hehe Tamago 04-25-2007, 01:27 PM shameless plug Subcompact Culture 04-28-2007, 03:39 PM Out of curiosity, what kind of street tires were you using, and how do you like your Tanabe Sustecs? Is it a pretty good autocross setup? I'm trying to decide which coilovers to get. I want something geared towards performance vs. ride comfort. Tamago 04-28-2007, 09:27 PM i was using Dunlop Direzza's 205 55 15, and they were an ok street tire. the tanabes are nice, but honestly not stiff enough for my liking. freakin awesome on the street tho. they're up for sale if you're interested, as i want to go more extreeeeem lol. Subcompact Culture 04-29-2007, 05:48 PM It seems like none of the coilover setups are stiff enough except perhaps the KSports -- is that what you're going to get? Do you have a for-sale thread for your Tanabes? I saw you were selling a set of DF210, but not the coilovers ... Tamago 04-30-2007, 11:31 AM i wanna do this sometime... that looks fun as heck... i just dont wnat to kill the front end of my car running into a cone :( you won't kill anything, cone rubber buffs right off. |
