I got an '05 xA 5-spd. . . this isn't the standard hard to get in gear thing, a lil different.

Sometimes when I shift into reverse, especially when cold, I get a fairly loud "clunk." It's almost like it's grinding, but not really. I got the clutch fully floored, and I even double clutch sometimes, but it still makes the noise. Sometimes it makes no noise at all! I did notice that when it makes the noise, the shifter tends to be a little stiffer than normal, but not I'm like forcing it in gear. But again, when it is quiet is goes in real smooth. . .

Anybody experience something similar?

hey I was gonna post this same thing.. but I keep forgetting.

I got an automatic box, and when I shift from park to reverse, sometimes I hear that short grinding sound.

hmm.. should we be worried??

I have seen in other 5 speeds that the rear always makes a whining sound in reverse. But in an automatic, there shouldnt be any noise, no grinding, clunking, nada.

Well the only thing I can think of for watt with his manual is the clutch isn't far enough in and/or you're moving forward still and it doesn't want to be in reverse.

I hate that whining noise when going in reverse :X

my 5sp grinds a little or will not go into gear sometimes if I do not put it in first and then reverse.. This has been discussed many times and I think is the same issue the guy with the 5sp is talking about.

Something about how the gears are syncronized? Mine has been like this since mile 1

Is it because the clutch is catching a un-synchro'd gear? I just made it a habit to go into first then reverse...

Well something I just thought of is for the automagic drivers, is there some sort of load on the transmission when you do this?

And I don't mean by not having the break on and shifting (if that's even possible) I'm talking about if you're sitting on angle, a slight hill even, and you're trying to shift.

Or does this happen all the time?

Now there is a clients driveway that when i do shift into reverse, it does make a clunk. I figured that this was because of the incline of the driveway. Any other time, it doesnt make the clunk sound. BTW .. the pitch is really steep on this one particular driveway.

I think the clunk that the people w/slushboxes hear when taking it out of park (especially when on an incline) is the parking pawl releasing. *There is a gear in the tranny that has a pawl (finger)* that holds the transmision when in Park. This is why you don't need to set the ebrake when parking. Do you notice how when you put the car in park and let off the brake, it rolls a just a little bit? That's the pawl finding the next tooth. If you were put the car in park and set the ebrake before you let off the foot brake you shouldn't hear that clunk when putting it back in gear.

As for the guys with the manual transmissions, it's the syncros (or lack thereof) on the reverse gear. And the whine, I believe, is because it's a "dog" (straight) cut gear. Same thing in the WRC rally car gearboxes

*Think of a hand crank winch or a come-along...it's the same idea as the gear on that.

Any manual car you drive will make a sound or even grind if you go right into reverse. You need to shift into a forward gear than into reverse and 99% of the time that fixes the problem. It has something to do with one of the shafts in the transmission spins constantly and one does not. When you shift into reverse you are making this extra gear lock into one of those shafts which makes the whole thing spin the opposite way which makes you go in reverse. Shifting into a forward gear than reverse matches the speeds of the shafts or something like that. I'm a little cloudy on the subject but I know its something like that.

I too get this clicking sound when I put my xb from park to reverse, but only when the car is still cold. When the blue light goes away, and I put it in reverse, its fine.

I live in san jose, and so the hill doesnt make a difference, since all around my area is flat.

Any ideas????
