Default 07 manual trans noise?

Is it just me or does the 5 speed make a lot of noise in 2nd gear? We (my girlfriend and I, it's her car) picked it up on Tuesday and I drove it off the lot (she was just learning to drive stick). First gear had a small amount of a whine to it and second was a little louder. The rest of the gears are fine. There is also a bit of extra engine noise, nothing the radio can't handel. Anyone know if this is normal or what can be done? She want's to take it back to the dealer, but I wanna see if we can skip the trip out there. Thanks for any help guys and gals.

The whine is normal ... it seems the sound comes from air rushing around the MAF under load. Which is why it could be atributed to tranny noise and you don't hear it when revving in neutral. Search "tC whistle" and read thru the crap. It becomes more audible with an aftermarket intake.

no, it's the gear box itself. i read that thread cause i noticed a bit of engine noise, but yet to notice the whistle.

there is clearly a bit of noise, almost the type you get from a straight cut reverse gear, coming from the gear box in first and more in second, than third it disappears.

thanks for the help tho.

I know what you are talking about, I have an 06 and i hear it as well. I dont think its anything to worry about, its just a little more pronounced than other stick cars...

okay, that's really all i was looking for. i just wanted to make sure it wasn't just her car. i figured it was something to do with all the tC manual trannys. she's worried about it morre becuase she thinks she may have messed it up while learning. i told her it would take a lot of really crappy driving to mess up the gears or the clutch. thanks

well, if i remember correctly from about3 years ago when i had my 83 s-10 blazer, the tranny did make some noise, nothing like this, and i don't remember my 89 mustang's trans making noise in any gear, aside from the usual reverse whine. well, thanks again guys.

Its the same noise any manual car makes when you reverse... Take it to 4-5 rpms on first and let go of the gas you will hear it...

no, it's not a problem when in reverse, although, it is really loud for reverse!

the whine is in 1st and 2nd gears. she's gonna have the service men look at it when we go to pick up her plates in a few weeks. just for piece of mind. i'll keep y'all updated.

yeah, will do.

i was listening a little closer last night. she let me drive it again. YAY ME! it does seem to be coming more from the intake, but there is a slight whine. i pointed it out to her, but regardless, it's still making a bit of noise from the tranny and both her mechanic friend and i agree, better safe than sorry. we gotta go back anyway for the plates so why not have it looked at. it'll probably be nothing. maybe just lack of sound deadening material.

well, we went to the dealer on tuesday to have them look at it and it was exactly like i had thought. the gear box is a little noisy, but for the most part drowned out by the motor "whistle" as you guys call it. nothing major.

So the noise has no effect on performance or wear & tear?

according to the technition, the bigger portion of the noise is the intake, which will increase if an after market intake is installed. there is a very slight noise that somes from the gear box that, again, according to the tech, is not a big deal. now, if something comes up in the future, i would believe it to be something big enough to cause a recall and FREE replacement of all trannies, but as i have said before, i don't think it's more than the engine/tranny being loud and a lack of sound deadener.
