Got an Injen short ram for my xB @ Super Autobacs a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised to see this widget included:

I think these forums deserve the credit ... back when the intake first came out, some people here kept pestering Injen with questions about MAF sensor contamination from crankcase blowby. Eventually Injen suggested this inline air diffuser, originally from the 350Z intake, to trap oil coming through the breather hose. Now it seems they're including it free of charge -- props to them.

Their Web site recommends replacement every 10,000 miles. I might just look into a group buy, or just pick up an extra one so I can cut it up and see what's inside.

Sad to say the "Injen xB" emblem is gone, replaced by a generic license plate frame and some stickers. Oh well, the vinyl should be good for another 5 whp

Here's a thought ... get a case of those and some silicone hose and you've got yourself a "retrofit kit" :)

I like the bling factor of the GReddy catch can too but IMO it might be better used for the PCV hose that's under the engine cover ... But hey, why not have two? 8)

has anyone actually had MAF sensor contamination with a properly installed intake? Any reason us non injen intake owners shouldn't do this?

Probably wouldn't hurt the K&N but I don't think you'd need it for either AEM intake because of the placement of that breather hose.

Thats right. It's behind the MAF sensor.

You can also use an inline fuel filter found in the "performance" aisle of any PepBoys. Look for one with a cleanable or replaceable filter. My brother used this on his b16 swapped CRX...pretty much ended his oil in the intake manifold issues. You can find these in all sorts of anodized colors...so this will add a bit more "bling" factor for those looking to dress up the underside of the hood.

You can also dump it directly into a breathable catch can. I had a JAZ product purchased for my Focus turbo project. Basically block-off the hookup at the induction tube to prevent any vacuum leaks. Take the tube running from the pcv or wherever and put it into the catch can. It has a breather at the top to vent, but all the oil will be caught in the container. It even has a nice little drain valve at the bottom. Found mine at Jegs. :)

I've got the short ram and I don't get it. What is this widget and what does it do?
Sorry, I'm not all that engine savvy... but I did get the injen installed.

I talked to the customer support guy over at Injen and he told me that the reason that they started putting this thing in the kit was more for marketing reasons then anything. Apparently AEM has started putting a similar filter in their short ram kit so Injen decided to follow suit. I guess they didn't want anyone thinking that their short ram was less MAF friendly. The Injen techs don't even think its necessary. The customer support dude felt that any sensor contamination was more likely the result of oil from the filter (the MAF is close to the filter on short ram). Anyway, I ordered one just for the hell of it and slapped it on a couple days ago. For $8 why not. Any time I get to pop something under the hood I'm game.

Well, its been about six or seven months since I put this thing in. Injen said that it only needs to be replaced every 10k or 12k miles, but I thought I'd see what it did if anything. Anyways, I cut the old one in half to see what was inside. It is just a piece of foam. I ran water over it to see if it had dirt or muck in it, but it was very clean. Anyways, I have the Greddy catch tank hooked up, so perhaps that is where all my muck is landing. Also, not sure why this ended up in the tc section. Perhaps copying it back to the xb area as well so folks who were originally following the post could get an update? FYI the cost went up from $8 to $15 on these in less then half a year.
