View Full Version : xB Road Trip Status Question???
7red7 07-08-2004, 11:40 AM Hey guys and gals...Just curious to know if anyone has taken their box on a road trip yet, and if so how it held up...
The reason I ask is because I'm planning on heading up to Northern California to see my girlfriend in a couple weeks, and of course I want to show her the box since she hasn't seen it yet...I got a good 7 plus hour drive to her place, and I'm curious to know if the xB can take the trip safely...I'm also really concerned about the nose and all that plastic on the bumper just begging to get chipped from road conditions...
This is my first road trip with my box so any tips on pre-trip engine care, or anything I should know about long drives in it would be greatly appreciated :)
Thanks and Take Care!!!

DJ_X_Trodinaire 07-08-2004, 12:35 PM there area a handful of people that drove the xB cross country

MrSmiley 07-08-2004, 12:50 PM 7 hours is nuttin .... did 20hrs straight (no stop more than 15 min) from Nashville, TN - NH with a stop in Boston to drop someone off ... no worries with the box
SCIONSRS1 07-08-2004, 02:42 PM I have been from No Virginia to Tampa Fl. and back, no problems here... Although it has great gas mileage, you lose time having to fill up the little tank... :?
ON the way down, I picked up a black cherry XB in the Carolinas, and we rode together for a while. It was basically stock except for some rims...
Also I had purchased a bra from LeBra for the trip and it help from all the bugs but we had to actually tape the top hood part down underneath the hood b/c it kept flapping really hard and banging against the paint, it didn't hurt it but glad we had the tape handy!!! :D I reccommend the T-shaped hood cover by COLGAN CUSTOM, looks like it would hold better than the one that just goes across the front lip. Also it's good to wax before and after a trip so that the bra doesn't mess up the paint...
ikhonlord 07-08-2004, 02:46 PM I took a trip from aroun NYC to Canada (The falls) it was a 7 hour trip going and 6 coming back. The box held up really nicely...I would recommend it!
7red7 07-08-2004, 09:43 PM Thanks for the info fellas, much apreciated :)
I'm really looking foward ot taking this trip...I think the only thing I really need to do before going would be tog et the break-in oil out of the engine...I've got about 1,900 miles on my box so far and haven't changed the oil yet...
Would you recommend changing out the break-in oil before taking the trip???
Thanks Again!!!

Al-Truistic 07-08-2004, 11:05 PM I'm planning on a trip to San Fran from and this cute little place in Milpitas  late to mid-July from L.A. and can't wait.
Honestly I think the only problems will be all the slight reduction in the bug population that hangs out immeditely in the way of my windshield. I am purchasing a front bra to hopefully not receive any damage from road fling onto the bumper. I am also hoping to have an armrest...woohooo!
I'm thinking of going up on the 5 and coming down with my sister on the 101...
Can anyone say anything about how strong winds do or don't affest stability of the Box?
7red7 07-09-2004, 02:53 AM See I was thinking of getting that Colgan Customs bra before the tirp too...More than anything I'm really worried about the possibility of getting the front end scratched and dinged up...Oh yeah the oil change too...I'd love some insight on that one too :)
HAPPY DRIVING!!!

I would recommend the Colgan Custom to the LeBra, I had the LeBra and it didn't stay on too well, the T- style bra looks like it will fit good!! :!:
thats what I need the colagan bra. that thing doesn't cost much and covers everything in the front! :D
TheScionicMan 07-13-2004, 10:31 PM my bad put me down for another 7 hour drive to Long beach from Milpitas. :D
Better add BOTI on that list too. that was a trek...
I think the Box handles well in the wind. Seems a lot more sure-footed than the Echo and it takes a pretty good gust to make me feel it.
Get a little cooler for some drinks and water. You'll save a lot of time and $ instead of stopping...
Draft off of something bigger than the Box. Going down to BOTI, I was driving alone and was covered with bugs. The guys that caravanned had hardly any. I followed EVILDAVE back, at night and got half as many as going down. Find a big-___ FUV and tail him...
Important Road Trip Tip - let the Nor*Cal gang know when you're gonna be around. Maybe we can plan a mini-meet.
7red7 07-14-2004, 11:09 AM Well I plan on taking in the box to the dealership for an oil change before I head up, and I should be in NorCal in about two weeks :)
Get ready NorCal here I come!!! :D
And thanks to everyone for the trip tips!!!

steve_k 07-14-2004, 07:34 PM some of you drive pretty far cross country. i was wondering do you ever get tired of holding down the gas pedal since there isn't a cruise control.

aduthie 07-15-2004, 04:54 AM some of you drive pretty far cross country. i was wondering do you ever get tired of holding down the gas pedal since there isn't a cruise control.
My cruise control was installed the day before my trip from Nashville to Detroit (about 550 miles each way). While I'm really glad I had it for the trip, it's a crap cruise control. Set it and let off the gas, and it drops 5 mph, then creeps up 4 mph. I eventually learned how to hit set, then accel 4x, then decel 3x. I'll be calling the guy who installed it shortly to tell him to fix it. Hopefully it can be adjusted. If not, he's going to have to take it back. (For $100, I'd be okay with it being crappy. For $365, hell no.)
As for how the car did on the trip... No real problems. I had to turn the stereo up to about 35-40 much of the time to hear it, despite having SSC set to "Hear" and the special setting set to "xB," having bass and treble set to 3+, etc. Got home and my ears were hurting a bit...
I did learn one thing, though -- never, ever drive this car with just the rear windows open at interstate speeds. The air pressure will throb and just about bust your eardrums. Ouch. So keep all four windows cracked open if you open 'em at all.
Anyone else go on a long trip? I would imagine that a lot of you on the west coast would be heading to scion Night in the norcal! :D www.scionnight.com :D
7red7 08-18-2004, 05:11 PM Hmmm Scion night huh??? Looks awesome!!! Me thinks I might have to schedule another NorCal trip really soon :D
Just crossing my fingers my box will get the sensor it need sin time for this event :D

Spider13 08-19-2004, 01:12 AM I leave Friday for my box's first road trip. South Carolina to Oklahoma, about 1200 boths ways. We'll see how it goes.
Crunk 08-19-2004, 01:19 AM I took my box from Austin, TX to Las Vegas. Pretty comfortable ride even with 3 kids in the back seat. Did btw 80-100 both ways. The temp light did come on a few times in Arizona climbing mountains in 113 degree weather and I did get a souvenier - another hole in my windshield from a flying rock.
All told i was pleased with the performance.
anybody that has the Colgan Custom bra, got a pic of it on the xb? and do you guys leave it on all the time or do you just put it on when going on trips...

rad401k 08-19-2004, 01:25 AM I took mine from panama city,FL to Key West (logged 1900 and change) incredibly surprised how well it rode, the rear window thing i thought i was going to die win i found out about that. The cruise control is the same one that was on my Tacoma, it is a standard Toyota dealer added cruise, i wish they had one that was specific to the xB, i might have gotten it if it was.
I did 4000miles in a week,
San AntonioTX > Graceland/Memphis > St Louis > Chicago > DaytonOH > Chicago > St PaulMN > San AntonioTX.
Good fun, held up well, no problems at all.
