Upholstery deodorizer
I searched for "upholstery deodorizer" and nothing matched my search.
Can anyone recommend a good deodorizer that will rid my seat of odor, while not leaving a residue or an odor of its own? This will be for daily use, as the chair I use at work reeks (BO), and all the industrial deodorizers I've used on it have not cut the stink. The stink gets into my clothes, which is then transferred to my driver's seat when I go home. I opened my car to go to work this evening, and was assaulted by the stink. (It's so bad, it makes me sick to my stomach. And I have to sit in it for 8 hours a day, and two hours more for the commute.)
Please help!

This is the best *I* know of - there may be better.

Thing is, until you take care of the work problem you will keep contaminating your car's upholstry.
Can you toss a bathroom rug onto the work chair to separate yourself from the stink? Keep it for yourself only, of course. Or is there any way you could get the seat cleaned? Vinyl sheeting between you and the seat (cut from cheap painter's drop cloth stuff 20x20 feet for a few bucks - clear vinyl). Or... I dunno, I don't really know the situation.
Is there any way to change clothing before getting into your car?

I've thought of several of these ideas. The thing is, I have to be discreet about it, since there are people coming in and out all the time, and I'm sure someone would ask, and I don't want to offend. I think the change clothes idea is the best. Someone I was talking to in chat suggested that, too. I wouldn't know what to say if I'm asked why I always change clothes, though.
Thanks again for your help, Tomas!

It's bad. We have industrial stuff here, since there's a jail downstairs. I've used six different products on it, to no avail. I'm definately going to try the meguiars. It's going on my car seat first, then I may use it at work. Or I may just change everyday.
I used to have the same problem I sat in a seat that other people sat in all day long. Basically the seat was occupied for 20 of the 24 hours in the day and needless to say it smelled like ___. A big smelly ___.
We tried everything to and pretty much what worked was a new chair and a no farting rule while sitting in the seat.
Sorry to hear about your dilemna, don't be discreet tell people they smell and need to bathe.

okay - is this for your car or your seat at work or both?
here's what's always worked on odors for me -
baking soda. it really does work. open a box and set in the car or in the chair at work over night.
oranges are awesome. or even lemons. cut a few in half and close them up in your car and park it in the sun. make sure they're good and juicy.
coffee grounds. the more the better. pour them into a paper filter, get 'em a little wet and close them up in your car. they absorb as well as emit.

interesting topic. i've always wanted to find some good air freshener/deodorizers on the cheap.
citrus probably does work well. i would think actually that maybe you only need the peel/rind, as that has the most aromatics in it .... (think your fingers after eating an orange)
coffee grounds makes sense.
baking soda makes sense.
and don't just keep spraying stuff to cover up the odorous area, it will just get worse.
another might just be to get them washed somehow. there has to be a way to wash car seats...

If you can, find a way to break the chair at work. Like snap a wheel off or something, so they have to get a new chair. Using one of those clear plastic seat covers they have at the dealer might work as well. If someone asks, just tell them you're a germ freak. As for your car, you might just have to steam clean the seats. You can usually rent them from grocery stores if you don't have one. That would be a good option for the work chair as well, although lugging one into work without someone noticing would be a feat.

If you are worried about offending at work, get a plastic seat cover for your car, that you only use on the way home from work. One that is heavy duty and can be washed might be the best bet. You can probably even make your own, if you're a hands-on type, from a heavy duty plastic couch/chair cover, and some decent plastic glue.
Then, install a Cabin Air Filter (there are threads in the forums discussing the installation, which is very simple). Make sure the filter you install has a charcoal layer.
Finally, if necessary, follow the coffee suggestion above as both a mask and an absorbing agent during the day.

These are some great ideas; thanks you guys! This chair is used 24 hours, so no baking soda or whatever overnight. As a temporary fix, I'm sitting on a jail blanket. (I'll stink up their stuff, not mine!) It's cold in here, anyway. This week when I'm on night shift, I'll steal, um, borrow the Seargent's chair for the night, while I try some of the fixes you all have suggested. Then, I'll work on my car seat, and that should fix the problem. Thanks again, you guys rock!
wow man if even after all that stuff that chair still reeks... I think that you might just want to find a way to throw that chair out... eww I wonder what is actually in it lol
of course I am a slight germophobe so my answers might be a bit biased

I don't want to know what's in it. I'm a germophobe too, so that's why it's disturbing me. I didn't mean to gross anyone out, but I thought that I should mention the pollutant, so you guys would know what I'm up against. I think I'll take some baking soda and mix it with water and spray it on the chair one night. If that works, then yay. If not, I'll spray the Meguires spray when I get it. I really really wish there was a way I could break or throw this chair out. Or I could make it disappear, but being as how this is a Police Department, I may have a bit of a run-in with the law! So I'll take the legal and peaceful way out.
When someone suggested coffee grounds I thought of that scene in Pulp Fiction where Sam Jackson is complimenting Tarantino on his coffee! Your friends are gonna get in and say "Man this is some serious gourmet sh**!"
Well, I got some baking soda and a squirt bottle and brought them to work last night. I soaked the chair in water with baking soda mixed in. Now the black chair has white water spots all over it but it doesn't stink! Woo! I'm not doing that to the car seat, though. I don't want to stain my seats. I'm going with the Meguires for that. Thanks for all your help!
