Default tC wind deflector recall not 100% effective

So...yeah, this happened yesterday::

Notice how the recall only prevents the center section from coming apart....the edges still became small, dangerous, loose pieces of glass. Seems they may need to recall the recall.

Anyone else have this happen AFTER having the recall done?

Also...anyone who has had this happen before OR after the recall....did your dealership cover it?

well.... with the TSB.. it was to help prevent tons of shards of glass flying about... which it looks like it did.

it can't protect from tiny little pieces that'll escape.. but i'm just glad no one got hurt.

sucks that it all happened. hope everything gets fixed soon.

glass breaks. but you're the first i've heard of having a shatter after the voluntary recall fix so i bet the NHTSA would like to hear from you.
1-(88 327-4236 (the toyota fix works). the fix wasn't to prevent the deflector from breaking, the fix was to prevent the shards from raining on the driver and "startling" them.

they closed the case on the deflector after the voluntary recall; some of the documents are here:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...sDocId=PE05021

this letter is interesting:
http://199.79.180.162/prepos/files/A...021-20956P.pdf

however, the NHTSA reopened a case on the moonroof panels here:
http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/pr...sDocId=PE06024

this letter is interesting:
http://199.79.180.162/prepos/files/A...024-24280P.pdf

as the overlay was intended to address the safety issue of a broken deflector raining glass into the cabin it appears it did so. i assume the roof was open?

my guess is the NHTSA will demand a similar overlay on the rest of the roof. hopefully it will be some form of "tint" instead of the black overlay on the deflector....

how the heck did that happen? were you driving at like 200mphs? did it break on you by opening/closing it often? I'm just trying to figure out how it went from not broke to broke..

the deflector is not safety glass like a windshield. when a windshield breaks it is designed to remain intact with a lot of cracks. the wind deflector isn't that glass. so because of some breaks, toyota asked us to bring the car back so a film could be applied to the underside such that in the event a "kicked up" rock hit it, it wouldn't rain glass down and freak out the driver. apparently the fix did what it was supposed to do.

the gov't is now looking at the entire roof because of the glass it made of and trying to determine the best course of action to address that "glass breaks".

surfcity40 - I think the roof was open, I didn't notice it till I stopped, shut the sunroof and windows, went in somewhere, came back out, and saw it. So I have no real answer on that...but I think it was while it was open. No glas entered the "cockpit" but there was plent all around under it (as you can see most of the bottom edge is gone)

The dealership is replacing it at no cost because I have already had the recall done and it sill looked that bad. The shop foreman kept saying "that's nuts!"

so you didn't hear a POW!? while driving. hmmmm. maybe you ought to just keep it between you and the dealership. a call to the NHTSA is in order because they are investigating what needs to be done.
good luck joe.

EDIT:: after looking at a fellow tC owners wind deflector that also had the recall done, I see that the recall DOES cover almost 100% of the wind delfector. There is only about 1/16th of an inch on each edge not covered. Something is deffenetly wrong here....

after the recall, I actually could still hear some rattling sounds from driver's side... What could I do? Ask Scion to take a look at it again?

like stated above the recal was just to stop it from "raining" down on the driver, not to make it bullet proof, and if you didn't eve nnotice it happened till later I'd say it works very well

It did most of its job, but what I'm saying is if it covers almost the whole thing...why didn't all the glass stay put but just cracked? It seems across the bottom there and in in the places it fell away...the laminent seemed to have broken too
