I was pleased that my MPG on the first tank was 32.3. Much better than I thought for not being broke in. this is mostly city but about 20% highway. Ran the a/c about 10% of the miles and traveled up to 80 MPH. I did go light on the gas pedal and try to coast when I can for lights etc.

I am very happy

After about 900 miles on my HotLava XB, I am averaging close to 35 mph with 54% of it highway miles. I drive it with conservatively, coasting to lights, slow takeoffs. TomSki in Vegas

This is a problem. If you got 32mpg for your first tank you are driving WAY too mild for a decent break in. You should be doing lots of hard full throttle pulls to the redline during breakin (after the car is fully warmed up of course).

In my first tank I got 25mpg. This is because most of it was 3 gear 3/4 to full throttle pulls to the redline.

im not gonna fiddle with the math and just post tank numbers.

325 on first tank

lowest was 304

most was 332 with about 15 miles of gas light (i no i no) driving.

ive never gone over 4k rpms and 75% (20 miles to and from work, 20 to and from g/f's house) is highway driving from 60-80 little to no a/c.

currently 2200 miles.

I don't think we'd have accurate mileage... I drove a 230 mile trip from Pembroke Pines to Orlando... I already had 91 miles worked into a full tank of gas. I tried driving to Orlando without getting gas. My idiot light (aka the "get gas!" light) never went on even though the needle was a little more than half the last tick point. I got gas near my apartment and the pump stopped giving me gas at like 9.6ish. I'm pretty sure my xA drank more than 9.6 gallons. I also tried topping it off a little more, but it wouldn't let me.

Is the mileage supposed to get better over time?

29.1 mpg first tank. About half city, half highway. All of it with the air on, and the highway was at 75-80mph.

That's what I'm getting without the gas light being on. So you have 30-50 miles left right at the time the gas light comes on??

Mine's a manual transmission. Filled the tank 3 times now - here are the mpg's on each filling:

1. 30
2. 33
3. 35

Looks good to me! Still, my 88 Ford Festiva averaged 38, and jumped 40 mpg lots of times. Thems was the days (sigh).

yea. thats what annoyed me the gas light turned on way too early. i think i'm geting such lower miles cause i'm taking off pretty fast and i normally drive 80 and i'm doing mostly freeway driving.

First few tanks were low mileage.

Now she's up to about 360 miles before I need a fillup.

(hint, drive real slow)

30.5mpg in my first tank. I drive mostly on the highway, but the highway in Atlanta during rush-hour moves slower and with more stops than most "city" roads.

I'm very pleased.

1500 miles, filled up 4 times...lowest was first tank at 26.5 MPG, then 18.5, 31,5 and tonight, 28...a bit of a disappointment so far but I'll try to take it easy on the next couple of tanks...my old Spec-V averaged the same!

The mileage you get is heavily dependent upon what sort of conditions you drive the car in. Our xB is mostly driven in suburban conditions (25-55MPH speed limits with frequent stop lights) and we have done 28.6MPG for the first 10,000 miles. The low fuel light tends to come on around 260 miles and we refill around 300 miles.

However, put freeway trips into the mix and mileage goes way up. You may not see the low fuel light until 300 miles, refuel at 350, and get 34MPG.

Then again, if your freeway trips are of the 85MPH variety you mileage won't be as good!

I see a lot of people talk about filling up their car when it is on empty. Most new cars have the fuel pump (Electric) right in the gas tank. This way it uses the fuel as a heat conductor and helps keep the pump cool. So running the car on empty makes the fuel pump get warmer and can shorten the life.

I don't think it is that critical but filling up before it gets low could give you longer life to the pump.
