Bye bye to my xB - soon
I am trading in my 2006, 8 month old xB (with 6000 miles) for a 2005 or a 2006 mitsubishi lancer evolution...
I am debating though... should i take my scion to a dealer as a trade-in, then pay the difference in the (high) dealer price for an evolution...
or should i sell the xB on ebay for CASH then purchase a 2005/2006 evo used from a 1st owner...
A brand new evo from the dealer (before trade-in) is about $35-$37k
A used evo (with low milage) from a 1st owner, ranges in the $24k-28k range <- much more affordable, which is why i feel i should sell my xB on ebay first then bring that cash to a private seller...
Any suggestions you dudes may have is greatly appreciated...

Driving the awesome handling xB, like at high speeds, really made me miss having a fast car... I've had fast american cars in the past (grand national, monte carlo SS with a corvette engine, etc) but never had a fast import...
I feel that will all the hype that the mitsubishi evolution (and the other one, the subaru wrx sti), i feel that it's a good time to buy something of this caliber... i like the way the sti looks but the evo is more powerful - as some reviews i've read have told me...
I'm selling because i never had agood handling fast car. hopefully the evo will turn my luck around...
assuming i can get an evo for about 23-25k, with about 3k in mods more, you can have an evo running low 12s in the quarter mile... that's astonishing to me since i always wanted a porsche 911 but didnt want to give up 100k hard-earned dolars... lol
There is just 1 more thing that i need to find out before getting the evo... and that's how much is my insurance going to go up! lol... i'm 26 right now but the xB is under my parents name... i live in NYC so i am saving thousands by keeping my 2 cars (2004 hummer h2 and my xB) under my rents name... the evo would also be under their name...

Nope, haven't test driven either of them yet... particularly since I know how to drive stick, but have driven stick maybe for a total of 3 hours in my life! hahahaha... I never had it stall on me or anything like that, i am not so bad at it... but that's the main reason i haven't test drove 1 yet...
another thing, i use my car on friday nights to sunday, mid day... not a daily driver by any means.. the longest trip i've taken was last week - from nyc to new hampshire, 4 hours each way in my xB. had a blast!
I will be test driving both soon, hopefully this weekend... i love the look of the interior and exterior of the sti but disliket he evo exterior and interior... im simply leaning in favor of the evo since it's faster and, i have seen online, it's more reliable than the subaru.... i really want the subaru but dont know too much about their reliability...

I've actually heard the opposite of the EVO's reliability. Also they have a very strict waranty program, that if you put any mods on it, you'll be SOL.
But it's all about test driving and personal opinion. Let us know when you drive one, and what your impressions are.

LOL @ the warranty thing - yeah, I heard about that... Honestly, going from an xB to an evo(or sti) , I think even STOCK, the car will be enough for me... but then again,,, everyone says that.... then they go mod crazy... lol...
I would also just put on like simple "bolt on" mods if anything - air filder, new exhaust, bigger turbo/intercooler pipes, etc - things that i can remove before showing the car to the dealer....

i feel ya on the wanting a faster import. and wanting a porsche. i am building a nissan 240sx for a faster import but i dont plan on holding onto it too long. but i do plan on selling my truck 240, and xb in a year or so and im going to try to pick up a 01 911 carrera for about 35. i have friends that have evo's and love them. xb, evo, sti, 911 all great cars!
To get back to your original question.. I would try and sell you xB on your own first, especially if you already have another vehicle to drive for the time being. Around here (Indiana) a used xB has a higher selling price then new. I just picked mine up this weekend and the dealer even laughed when she was walking me out to a used xB and I said it would probably cost more then the new ones. With that in mind, I would think you could come out a few thousand ahead of what a dealer would offer you.
One of the pro about trading in at the dealer, is that you only pay tax on the difference. If you sell it on your own, then you will have to pay all the tax on the purchase price. In Indiana which I think is at 6%, that can save you about $600 on $10k.
You may also want to check on the insurance for an Evo. I'm sure it is not cheap.
Warranty - Looks like Mitsu has a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on the powertrain which is better than the STI (Did buy one but didn't keep it - long story). As noted above, Mitsu can void this warranty if you do anything out of the ordinary with the car. Also I don't know if the 10 year warranty is transferrable. May want to check that out as well.
All these things to think about rather than just buying a nice car.

Dr. No.. you are exactly right.. 6% in Indiana, and you make a very excellent point about saving on the tax. When I traded in my F150 this weekend, I only had to pay tax on $2000 of the trade in saving me quite a few hundred dollars.

thanks to everyone though! all good advice! i've made an appointment to test drive an STI this saturday, after getting the oil changed in my xB. the dealer is going to see the xB and KNOW why i want an sti/evo... lol...
I think I may also be taking pics of my xB this saturday and maybe throwing it on ebay this weekend too... I'll see what happens @ the test drive... hopefully a mitsu dealer gets back to me on testdriving the evo...
Almost every review i've read tho says the mitsu is faster on the road than it is on paper - the higher hp sti does faster in almost every recorded test: 0 to 60, quartermile, etc.... yet the evo is still picked above it... and personally, i think the evo is ugly but i'd still get it if it beats a porsche >=)))

All I have to say is DOOOOO IIIITTTTT!!!
I wish I would have known I was leaving the job that I had (huge reason why I bought the box). I'd be in another car in a heartbeat. My box knows I love her.

evo's freaking rule. i prefer them over the STi hands down. but then again, i don't think it's a good daily driver. think about it. maintenance costs on the EVO/STi are pretty high, and your gas mileage will suck. and you will be targets of cops (i saw an article way back where a cop gave some guy with an evo a ticket because of the stock spoiler ...). but you already know this.
i say go for it. i love evo's. just don't be a sellout like some drivers who think they're the $h!t because now they have a fast car.

The evo X is a little ways off but will be way better than both the current evo and sti. I think both are great cars and are closely matched in terms of power. the evo is a little faster but i think the sti looks alot better. you really can't go wrong with either car, imo. But if you can afford it and have the patience I'd say wait for the evo X.
Just my 2 cents:
I'm trying to sell my xB right now, using AutoTrader.com, craigslist, and the classifieds here on SL - I've had no bites (and as far as I can tell I'm not asking too much). A lot of people know that the used xB's are higher than new and aren't even looking at used ones, even though mine is a Release Series, which they can't get new anymore. My advice is try eBay - that's my next route.
Also, I have a friend who just got rid of his 2005 STi - I drove it once, and that clutch is a bear to drive in the city. My buddy traded his STi in on a 2007 Legacy Spec B - not as much power, but much better ride. He doesn't miss the STi one bit.
Whatever you decide, good luck with your new car and driving in NYC - I used to work at 23rd and Park Ave South, so I know what it's like driving in and around the city - more power to you!

The Evo has horrible resale compared to the xB, the insurance is outrageous, it is a cop magnet, and the interior is unforgiveable for a $30,000 car.
Fun to drive though, I have driven one four or five times. I didn't notice any problems with the clutch. Maybe if you slip it? I would never do that.
Personally I like the new 2.5L WRX over the Evo, getting up to $30,000 I want some real luxury and neither car has it. You can get a new WRX and have a factory warranty. I saw a 0% sticker on the hood of a new Impreza a couple of weeks ago. It's the "All Wheel Deal" Promo on Subaru's website.

just my 1.5 cents worth...
where you live... keep the box..
from the info I have recieved gas is gonna be upwards of $4 gal in a very few months..
what good is haveing a "go fast " car if you cannot afford to put gas in it,, let alone the higher insurance and trying to keep it on the road instead of sitting in the repair shop....
but if your heart is set on a new ride... go with the Subaru
