Default Automatic Transmission question

My xB has an automatic tranny. This is my first car that isn't manual. When I start it up in the morning, it takes it almost a mile before it starts shifting "properly". Is this normal? Is there a warm-up period?
thx

It doesn't go into overdrive until the engine warms up. Thus it feels like it doesn't shift properly. Once the blue light turns off on the dash it will shift fine. Just be easy on the car until it has warmed up.

yeah, just take it slow, it takes longer for an auto tranny to warm up with the engine, so baby it around 20-25 until the blue light goes off

Default here is the deal....

I have found that when you first start it up......

if you go right away, it will only shift into second and not third until you hit almost 25 miles an hour and not into overdrive until the blue light goes off. So heres how it all works.

When you first get in and start it......Wait for about 1 minute (give or take a half minute or so depending on hot summer vs. cold winter temps)...until the rpm comes down to exactly 1000 rpms while in "park". Once it is there at 1000, it will shift through 1st and 2nd gears and on into 3rd gear "normally". Drive it easy and once the blue light goes off, overdrive will engage as well.

Have never had a problem or doubt since I figured all of this out. I'm a 5-speed guy myself and this is my first automatique'' as well. I really do enjoy it surprisingly.

Take care and welcome to Scion''!
