I'm sorry but I cannot stand this new chick out on the scene named Cassie. This girl has no singing or performing ability whatsoever, and she proved that on 106th & park. I can't believe she actually has a record deal and Diddy & Bad Boy sigend her with all these other talented artist out here struggling to make it. Is this what music has come to, Beauty before talent? What's even funnier then her having a record deal is a petition going around online to get her to stop singing and focus on something she can actually do. Her voice has been compared to Penguin moaning. LMAO...Do us all a favor and get this chick outta here. You can view the petition here.....http://www.petitiononline.com/Shamond/petition.html
For those of you who get into this kind of music, let me know what you think.

I hate the music industry today. It revolves around MTV, and that sucks. Pop has bled over to country and they have are running country music the sameway. Willie, Waylan, and Merle wouldn't have a chance in today's music industry. Neither would the Stones, Aerosmith, or Pink Floyd. And that sucks baaaad. Who else wouldn't have had a chance? What great talents are we missing out on now because music is so focused on glamour and looks?

Man that was beautiful... Music is has gotten so bad, I couldn't even tell you a name of a band in today's music (besides 311 and linkin park). I can only listen to classic rock: led zeppelin, stones, Boston, Queen, Styx. I cringe with this music today, they all think it's cool to be emo and play a guitar like shiot. first of all the word emo has gone too far..emo is a genre of music, execellent one at that..but that same "pop music industry" you talk of coined the word emo to be this silly attitude, fashion sense, and musical taste, constructed a modern time debauchery..which disgusts me.
And everything is cool in present time, your just late to find out.

Yep, thats why I tend to stay out of mainstream music. Even though I have my 'popular' bands I would rather listen to more punk/alternitive. Although I also listen to Styx, Aerosmith and the like. I can't stand MTV and Sellout bands. Oh why oh why has this rap phase not died yet...

Hmm...
Well, when "Me & U" came out on the radio,
it wasn't new to me.
Well, not just me, but most of the people who participate
in collegiate dance companies/teams, and that is
a damn big number of people.
I don't know, we tend to find music and discover
songs before most of the people out there,
and this was one of them. The song has been
played out 2 years ago haha.
I have to admit, her voice isn't the best, but what I think
really draws people to her, is pretty much the beat. People
could care less about her voice if the beat is crazy hype.
Take AKON for instance.
If he tried to sing with that voice of his that sounds like
a Jamaican chipmunk on helium all by himself, I'm sure
them folks' at the Apollo wouldn't just "WOMP WOMP"
him off stage, but that host might even eat him.
It's pretty much the beat also when you put him and Cassie
together. If people could dance to it. then it's a hit.
That's basically it.
Producers should be the ones getting the starlight imho.

For those of you who haven't seen the performance, this is what I'm talking about.
And I'm sorry but drop dead gorgeous should not be a criteria for singing talent which ultimately lands someone a record deal. They have modeling contracts for that. That's what she did, she should stick to it because she sucks as a singer. Alot of people in the industry suck, but I think this is the ultimate at the moment. She should have pulled a millie vanillie (sp?) on that one.

Every generation, every genera of music, has had its totally talentless hacks pushed by someone as 'the next great thing.'
What is disappointing - and frightening - is the actual decision makers - the buying public - not having enough discrimination to outright reject the fakes and flakes. :(
No matter how 'powerful' or rich the promoters of crap are, they can't fill venues unless there are enough folks willing to be 'lead' by them. It's not the promoters who bother me - they are, and always have been, in the biz to make money. Those who worry me are the mindless drones who follow...
(It has been 38 years since I worked as a tech in a recording studio - other then the equipment getting a lot better, little else has changed. :( )

Tomas: MTV breeds the mindless drones and they've become remarkebly efficient at it, turning out millions every year! It is their Idol, their center of the universe, their whole reason for being. What's worse, is that by the time they get out into the real world and MTV is no longer their God, there's an entirly new generation planted in front of their plasma screened diety getting their life force sucked out of them.

We all know the truth about businesses like MTV and BET.
They are desperate and will do anything to boost their ratings share, no matter what the cost to society.
I have invented the term: 'Phony Hollywood Television music' to describe the noise they make. This is NOT culture; this is the opposite of culture. MTV programs people to NOT think for themselves, to instead, react to what has been shown. Basically it is the opposite of what that Martin Luther King was talking about when he said to look inside a man's character. Boy, that MLK must have been some kind of nerd with that equality craptalk.
We must all bow down to these GODS on BET. After all they get the chicks, the drugs, cars and whatever they want, and that is the true measure of a man in today's (sick) society.
This sick culture has perverted the phrase, "PERSUIT OF HAPPINESS' to mean the RIGHT TO BE ENTERTAINED at all times.
I am disturbed by the one-sided controversy over 'MUSIC VIDEOS'.
There is no one allowed to express any alternative views.
Serve your country and I will be impressed with you. Volunteer at whatever you want to do to help your community.
Rape a child to win an IMAGE award and I have a problem with an industry that will glorify any crime as long as it is performed by a black man.
Message received: Black hood boys have complete immunity when wilding to get even for slavery. White boys can have immunity also; they just need to add tattoos and an ear ring. MTV & BET are NOT about personal responsibility or any responsibility.
Today, it's all about having immunity so you don't have to obey any laws. Just look at the American driver. You either got to be a cop, a lawyer, a judge, a preacher man, black, Hispanic, don't speak English, don't read English, a woman, ___ or indigenous to Antarctica. I feel like the only white-honky gringo that has no excuse for immunity. And as a result, I am the only person left alive that uses directional signals as required by law. MTV & BET have programmed that generation to NOT obey laws; instead they must look 'cool' at all times and never be like ERCLE.
Did anyone see the 'COP-SLAPPIN’ unrecognized black congress woman go down with a PINK song? That was just before her new BLACK PANTHER security force conveyed their racial hatred for JEWS as cameras rolled. It is O.K. to be bigoted if you are black, but any white would be jailed if he were to use that kind of hate-filled language. It would be called ‘Racial Bias Hate Crimes’ if said by anyone without immunity.
I am glad that I do not have any children whose morals and character would be sacrificed on the alter of a higher ratings share.
Feel like having sex? Go with those feelings is what MTV & BET say, could they say anything else and still be top of the ratings wars? Viewers may get stuck with an unwanted, out of wedlock, bastard child that I would have to pay for as the mother buys cigarettes and liquor. After all they have been programmed to believe that nothing is wrong or right, it is all about your feelings.
Don't get me started on this because I could go on......
It is nice to see someone is able to use the brains that god gave them and critisize the culture GODS.

One is like 11 or 12, and taught herself how to yodel from a book and a tape. It's frickin awesome. And there's another little girl, maybe 13, Bianca (sp?) something or other. lol....I love the responses to this thread! I being a work in progress music artist must be critical of what's going on in the industry. I think it's a crying shame and an outrage. Like it was stated previously, It's not so much the labels or the promoters, but the lack of musical integrity of society that feeds into it. If no one would buy music that sucks, i.e. Cassie, then they wouldn't sell it.
She is not the only person who is obviously only in the industry to make a quick dollar. I say quick dollar because I highly doubt that someone like this could truly have a lasting music career. Let's just say she has a music job for the moment. I agree with the whole MTV and BET in it to make money no matter the cost. The quality of music that you hear on these stations today is down right ridiculous. Most of the songs absolutely talk about nothing. Eventhough I am in the demographic of people that they target on these channels, I am smart enough to know that a good song takes more than a good beat. Half of the people who listen to this stuff don't even pay attention to the words half of the time and I know that firsthand. The first thing I listen to in the song is the melody and the lyrics. It seems that in this day and age you could put out a song about anything, say for instance wheaties, put a good beat behind it and watch it fly off the shelves. Ask someone who bought it what its talking about and most likely they wouldn't even be able to tell you.

In actuality, there is a lot of really phenomenal music out there….Ojos de Brujo, Cheb I Sabbah, Burhan Ocal, Vasen, Hedningarna….so many it is quite futile to try to list them all. Music has not stopped progressing, as a matter of fact, music has reached new levels un-thought of in years past.
The trick is, you must go beyond mtv, radio, etc if you want to discover music that is not pre-packaged, one-size-fits-all, mainstream pop garbage. Mtv thrives on the least common denominator, and packages a product that appeals to a wide range of sheep…err, people I mean. There is no risk taking, no genre bending, nothing new at all. Simply the same recycled bands doing the same thing ad naseum. The fact they continue to thrive reveals more of regarding the consumers mind than that of 'big music'. Just look at the leading poll reply….more people are interested in the way some looks than they are the actual music. I understand using that criteria to judge your favorite model, but when you are judging a bands worth by looks, you are completely missing the picture.
Remember, if the masses didn’t buy it, they wouldn’t be pushing it.

Maybe, but the internet puts the world at your finger tips. It is 1000 times easier than it was 5 years ago even.
You have to spend a little to get someting in return. Im sure a lot of people watch silly youtube videos and the like...basically just 'surfing' around, wasting time generally.
But when used as a device to gather and spread information (as was its original design), it is the most effective tool for sorting through the chaff to get to that life giving kernel of wheat.

It's True
As I revealed in my post yesterday at XXL, P. Diddy’s newest protégé Cassie has a dirty little secret: Her hit single "Me & U," currently the number three song in the country, is all about giving a guy a blow job. No Lance Bass.
If for some reason you've managed to go this long without hearing this mess, you can stream it at Cassie's MySpace profile to hear what I'm talking about.
Cassie @ MySpace
And here I've gone through the song's lyrics, Elliott Wilson-style and revealed how they're all about polishing a knob. Again, nullus. I was too lazy to do all of that footnoting though, so my comments will just appear in italics between the song's verses.
Verse 1
You've been waiting so long
I'm here to answer your call
I know that I shouldn't have had you waiting at all
I've been so busy, but I've been thinking about what I wanna do with you
Bol Explains: They've been together for a while now, possibly as long as two weeks, but Cassie has been reticent to go down on her boyfriend. Because she's part-black. She's been thinking about it quite a bit though, because all girls secretly enjoy giving out blow jobs.
Bridge
I know them other guys, they been talking bout the way I do what I do
They heard I was good, they wanna see if it's true
They know you're the one I wanna give it to
I can see you want me too
Now, it's me and you
Bol Explains: Cassie has already gone down on about half the guys at school, and word has gotten out. Which of course means that the other half of the guys at school are lined up to take their turn. Unfortunately for them (and isn't this always the case?), she's only got her mind set on one guy's unit. And soon her lips will be as well.
Chorus
It's me and you, now
I've been waiting (Waiting)
Think I wanna make that move, now
Baby, tell me if you like it (Tell me if you like it)
It's me and you, now
I've been waiting
Think I wanna make that move, now
Baby, tell me how you like it
Bol Explains: The prospect of a man's unit in Cassie's mouth finally becomes too much to bear, and so she drops down to her knees and gives her boyfriend what he's been hearing about and waiting to experience for going on two weeks now. She wants to know if it's all he imagined it would be. It probably is.
Verse 2
I was waiting for you to tell me you were ready
I know what to do, if only you would let me
As long as you're cool with it, I'll treat you right
Here is where you wanna be
Bol Explains: You see, some girls will just voluntarily drop to their knees and start blowing a guy, because they understand that this is really all the guy wants out of life, let alone a relationship. Other gilrs like for a guy to order them, and in some cases grab the back of their head and point them in the right direction.
Bridge
Chorus
Verse 3
Baby, I'll love you all the way down
Get cha right where you like it, I promise you'll like it (I swear)
Just relax and let me make that move (It's our secret thang)
Keep it between me and you
Bol Explains: Cassie's boyfriend was concerned that she was going to suck him right up until the point when the poison was ready to come out and then back off, as some girls are wont to do. But Cassie assures him that she has no problem swallowing his load, as long as he doesn't tell anyone.
This is a vid of her, doing that ME AND YOU before she was signed.

I didn't write that, so I don't see how I am reading too far into it. that was clearly posted by someone else, and the link to the video pretty much proves it. You can even read a statement by Cassie herself saying that she has never been proud of that video. I'm just reading what is stated, none of that was my own assumption. Matter of fact I'll post you the statement she wrote in response to recent criticisms of her.
Cassie's response to her recent criticism and artist ratings:
"Yo, some things need to be cleared up right now. First off I’d like to say that the media is absolutely ruthless and will do ANTHING to tear people down. This week particularily has been the worst with media for me. They’ve released statements that I never said about the intentions of my first single ‘Me & U.’ I never said that the song is about oral sex. Take it as you wish, I NEVER SAID THAT, EVER!
Second, this week I had an interview on New York radio, first with Angie Martinez and then later with Funk Master Flex on Hot 97. What I said with both Angie and Flex was what I said, but all of it was taken out of context when sites such as Vibe.com decided to write about it. I never said that Pharrell could get it, I said that he was cute and that was on the Angie Martinez show. Also on Angie’s show, I said that I didn’t have time for guys and that is exactly what I meant. It’s not that people aren’t good enough or however some of you may have taken it. I’M BUSY, STRAIGHT UP. I never said that I didn’t like Ciara, I am actually a HUGE FAN of hers. I said that I didn’t understand why we are compared, not only because I’m only on my first single, but because our styles are much different, she’s soooooo talented, why would I discredit her? Lets be real.
On Flex, he read into a lot, but that is what his show is about. I realized that after I was done with the show. I personally don’t feel that I need to talk about this “unofficial video” again (right now). But quickly, it was a bad look that got leaked on the internet. No, I DID NOT leak it….I don’t care for that video, I never have cared for it. Bow and Omarion are great guys and it was wrong of me to talk about them on air. I had no bad intentions with what I said on them, but I can understand how it would upset people. Again, I’ve met them both and they are very sweet and kind.
The rate from 1 to 10 was BS. It didn’t mean anything to me. None of them were right if I had really thought them through, but how would you feel if you were on live radio with Flex. I do wish that I said no to the suggestion of the “game.” Personal apologies go out to any of the artists that were offended by their rating-they weren’t real, none of them.
Oh and lastly, I am aware that my live performances have been pretty bad….no excuses, I’m still getting over stage fright.
I am very upset with the series of events this week and I do not appreciate people making me look and sound crazy. I’m not a a whore or a b*tch, which is what people have been making me out to be. I’m a 19 year old girl, I’m single and I’m working my ___ off. Thank you to all of the fans and supporters that have recognized my hard work."

The fact that she thought she could fool the public with what has to be such an elaborate hoax is ridiculous. There's a difference between liking and appreciating music. I don't neccessarily like listening to Coltrane, but I can appreciate the man and his music because he was genius. There was also quite a bit of crap back in the day as well, but the cream always rises to the top. Talent is one thing, being entertained is quite another. Sorry if I'm not making much sense, just trying to stress that talent crosses all boundries, period. Not saying it has to be liked it, but it must be respected.

Of course it can be said that it's all a matter of opinion/taste etc. but seriously man.... T Pain??? The thing is that music now-a-days is shallow, empty, as well as message being spread. It's funny how the masses cling to it. There are so many hip-hop songs stating how women are sluts, whores, _____es, and how you got to get paid??? How about getting a job like the majority.... It's funny too because if there was a poll done on the gender of people that listens most to "booty, dance" style hip hop that degrates women, i'm willing to bet the huge majority would go to women. F*cking clueless.... It dumbfounds me, open up your ears! Then when it's brought to their attention their like "DUH, I don't pay attention to the words, I just like the beats, DUH...) Give me a f*cking break you clueless morons. People in general need to pay more attention to music, and it's lyrical content/message. Life isn't about spinners, killin' _____s, or trying to prove how tough you are, because the truth is that the majority of this new Hip-hop/music in general sucks!!! All it is doing is poluting people's minds, stupifying them, and spawning out a bunch of posers. If you want to listen to real hip-hop, listen to Tupac's non-commercial stuff, or Tribe Called Quest, GURU, Common, Mos Def etc. These guys are for real, and have done some amazing stuff. GURU compiled an album series called "Jazzmattaz" in which teamed up with old school, and new school, very prominent Jazz cats, and it was really dope! There is tons of other music as well besides hip-hop.... It's either this new trash hip-hop, or some lame a$$ rock that people listen to these days. The youth as a whole needs to open their minds, broaden their horizons, and actually give other music, and artist a chance instead of conforming to being MTV produced moron drones for the sake of being cool/accepted....
BTW, I know again that it's really a matter of opinion but T Pain/Panic at the Disco have NO place in the same sentence with a GIANT like John Coltrane. He was an innovator/pioneer. He was very influental, and changed music. He will be in history books, and will always be remembered. The others mentioned will be old in month.... according to TRL anywyas LOL....

Popular music simply reflects the soul of the masses.
Go out and talk to people you dont know and you will see why the music that is so popular, is.

Then I imagine the masses are just as shallow, and as souless as the music they listen to.... This is very upsetting.

^^ I would partially agree with that statment, but on the other hand I would say that not everyone that listens too meaningless music have meaningless lives. They just lack musical integrity and the ability to sort out the trash from quality music.

I never said they had meaningless lives, just shallow ones that have difficulty with music comprehension.

I don't think that makes someone shallow. How does listening to pointless music make someone shallow if you don't mind me asking?

Take a look at the poll. What choice is in the lead? How she looks, which has nothing to do with musicianship.
It is, of course, a silly poll on ScionLife, but my experiences have confirmed this mentality. Very few people actually put talent above the looks and/or popularity of a singer/group/band. To me this shows that they cannot make an accurate judgement of worth based on the music alone, so other factors, non-musical factors, come into play. Not to mention that 98% of ALL mainstream music is made up of basic 3 chord progression in all the songs. Theres no talent in it at all.
This shows shallowness in my opinion.

This is gospel. We think very much alike, as far as music goes.... I'm sure you listen to all types of music, but give me some selections to check out.

Glad you can hear where Im coming from.
Selections? Well, now you are asking for it, since I can talk for days about the subject. I will keep this as short as I can:
Ojos De Brujo - Techari
Quick Description: Spanish/Flamenco Hip Hop (but a horribly limiting description…listen to it and decide.)
Holy Sh*t!! This is phenomenal!! My favorite flavor of the moment.
As if their previous relese, Bari, wasnt incredible enough, they continue to evolve their one-of-a-kind sound even more, although I stil prefer Bari!
This is a melting pot of styles, including gypsy, flamenco, rumba, hip-hop, rock, jazz and funk, just to name a few. Even touches of celtic and Mid-East sounds can be heard here. To call this 'fusion' is like calling the Beatles 'some rock band'.
Im sure quite a few of you will disregard this band because you think world music is for snobs or hippies, but EVERYONE who likes solid, talented music should give this band a chance. Embrace cultural fusion!
Elend - The Umberson
Quick Description: Neo-classical/soundtrack-esque/ambient
Hear the echoes of the thundrous, rapturous symphonies of the first half of Elends darkest work and the sullen desolation of the second.
The music is a combination of neo-classicism, neo-romanticism and ethereal ambient, with a hint of atonality and dissonance. The sound is defined by a combination of synthesizers, violins and varying vocal styles. The synthesizer programming is top notch, sounding very much like a live orchestra in many places. The music flows from lush organic melodies infused in harmony, into dark and blaring atonal passages, and finally into loose free-form ethereal ambience. The dominant sound is hauntingly Romantic, often times bordering on transcendent and otherworldly.
The vocals are provided primarily by two soprano singers (Eve Gabrielle Siskind and Nathalie Barbary). Seperate, their vocals are beautiful; together, unbelievable. But the two composers, Renaud Tschimer and Alexander Hasnaoui are also heard by way of whispers, low singing, and (interestingly enough) growling. The growling and shrieking really adds another dimension to the music, creating a foreboding and threatening atmosphere in many of the calmer moments and creating chaos and dissonance in the atonal segments of the music. Some of the best parts occur when the sopranos are singing in high, angelic unison, while horrible shrieks blister about (usually representing Lucifer). The contrast is truly staggering, and it must have taken some degree of good intuition on the band's part to know where to properly integrate the polar opposites and to what effect.
This album is a fine way to transcend the mundane; it is one of those rare pieces of music that allows the listener to drift away into other worlds. Listen to this album and quickly forget the everyday world and be immersed in the immaterial and ethereal.
The music is dark, but also very beautiful. This is a style I truly enjoy
Cheb I Sabbah-La Kahena
Quick Description: North African Electronica World
DJ Cheb i Sabbah takes a North African Vibe, mixes in a bit of Spanish (Moorish) feel and spices that with electronica/techno effects and rhythms. Many ethnic styles of instruments are presented here, including Jewish, African (both North and South) and Arabian. Extremely diversa is this release.
I would highly recommend an alternative version of this release, called La Kahena-The Remixes. Has a much more drum and bass type feel, and smooths those ethnic edges that keep many away from true world music.
Hurdy Gurdy - Prototyp
Quick Description: Nordic Folk/Experimental
"Stefan Brisland-Ferner of Garmarna and Totte Mattsson of Hedningarna are both masters of the Swedish hurdy gurdy. On Prototyp, they have come together to demonstrate the range and power of this ancient, versatile instrument, which has been dubbed a medieval synthesizer. Exclusively using sounds generated from hurdy gurdys, they play, process, sample, and tweak both traditional and original tunes in innovative and provocative ways."
Go to www.noside.com to here it (and Hedningarna! )….click on artists, then select one, and listen. Some have video clips as well. Also check out Vasen, another 'Nordic hallucination' on the site.
Very talented musicians combine modern and medieval in a way I have never heard before. Some tracks soft and comforting, others war or marching like.
Some others: Lord Wind (sounds like a Conana the Barbarian sound track), Angizia (Wacked out Opera), Smadj (Mid-East Jazz), Hossam Ramzy,....I could go on for days!!!!

I would recommend Ojos De Brujo (Eyes of the Wizard...I think) over all that I listed. It is easier to comprehend than say, Elend, and is very danceable and pop-like, while not being popular in sound. An article of possible interest:
"Vocalist Marina “La Canillas” Abad, dressed in various flamboyant gypsy costumes, has an utterly commanding stage presence, whether singing soleá, rapping at full speed, trading rhythmic phrases with other singers, or accenting the instrumentalists on the fly. During this unfortunate era of featherweight juvenile pop divas, it's refreshing to see a real woman on stage who can sing with soul and be outrageously anti-conformist without becoming cartoonish in the process....

Musically, Elend is POSSIBLY more talented than ODB, but it is quite hectic and demands a lot of the listeners attention.

I checked out some of the "Ojos de Brujo" you recommended. Very cool material. I love "gitano (gypsy)" music, and other musics influenced by arab/spanish styles. I haven't had a chance to listen to the other stuff you mentioned. If you're into flamenco/gypsy style music then you should listen to "Ketama". Some of their stuff is more traditional as far as spanish music goes (boleros, cha-cha etc.) but they mix it up as well with salsa, bossa nova and other eclectic latin jazz sounds. It's a fresh sound.
