View Full Version : Headlight covers - Need opinions
scioninla 07-10-2004, 02:06 AM I got these smoked headlight covers from DAMD. They fit the Japanese bB headlights and if you have the TYC projectors. The US model headlights have the bump by unlike the completely flat lens from the Japanese model.
I wanted to see your opinion on these covers. Several companies that I know of have the ability to make these but I was not sure how the US Scion owners would react to this - will it sell or will it flop.
Of course to make it, it wil be designed to fit the US headlights and will change it to make sure it is not the exact copy of the DAMD one for legal reasons.
Also I was thinking of maybe doing them in clear and smoke. Maybe have an xB logo etched in the center.
Please let my know your opinions..good or bad ....it is appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
By the way in the following pictures, I did not close the hood completely just FYI.

xvolcomx88 07-10-2004, 02:23 AM That looks SWEEEEET! :) How much $?
DenZinz 07-10-2004, 02:27 AM hmmm... *scratching head*
Would look better if the fog in the bumpers were smoked.
BTW...Are those lights in your front lip bright?
LuxNova 07-10-2004, 02:34 AM Is that the top-secret TRF kit that will be revealed in a couple hours?
DenZinz 07-10-2004, 02:37 AM I believe thats a Nish special (modified red genie)
javageek 07-10-2004, 02:43 AM I like it! How much would something like that cost.
biohazardous_customz 07-10-2004, 03:00 AM I like it very nice especially if we get it clear and paint with a tinted clearcoat to match paint. . . .that would look sick
How much??
Max2k 07-10-2004, 03:53 AM I'd hit it, depending on the price.
JdeezXB 07-10-2004, 03:55 AM i likie
az_pinoy 07-10-2004, 04:50 AM that looks sweet imo..i'd get it (depends on how much it would be though)

Sid_xBicious 07-10-2004, 07:50 AM bosing,
if your known company can make those, can they copy(well a little tweaking) your E-sam visor? dude i'm dead to the bone on those but can't justify its price. maybe you can do something about it.
Genesis 07-10-2004, 08:44 AM YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!! Please. I 've been wanting one!
hahajoey 07-10-2004, 08:54 AM will it be street legal?
that might have a big impact on people rocking them..
imagine u sell like 20 of them and then cops harass them?
i dunno....
but it does look cool
scioninla 07-10-2004, 09:57 AM Thanks so far for some of your inputs.
As far as prices..not sure what the cost would be.
What would you pay for something like this?
I still would have to see if companies are willing to build this part and what the tooling will cost.
Also, Joey brought up a good point in regards to it being legal or not.
It depends on each state and locality. I see a lot of trucks and cars with smoked head lights etc.
I think if it is visible at night and it does not affect the brightness of the headlights to make it unsafe for driving then that would be an issue.
These covers don't affect the brightness at all when I tried them on.
In the day, you can visibly see the turn signals blinking etc...
I think it's just when you have it too dark is when you'll run into problems.
I like the idea of making them clear so people can tint them to what ever they prefer.
I think it would be cool to have them clear so that it will still look stock but now you have headlight protection. I am sure headlight lenses cause more than this product.
We'll have to see if this is something we are going to pursue....I think the question really is..will people buy it? How much is someone willing to pay for it? Will there be enough buyers out there to get back your initial investment and eventually make profit?
Once again, thanks for the input. Please keep them coming.
TheScionicMan 07-10-2004, 10:01 AM I'd be interested if the pricing is right.
hahajoey 07-10-2004, 11:08 AM the thing shouldn't cost that much to product(it'll be like 2 vent visors put together worth of material) i say let it list price at 100 bucks even(with appropriate hardware)
and it'll be a done deal..
i think it'll be cool..
hey adrian.. can u guys produce a smoked color
rear like wing/deflector(like suvs, vans and whatever has) for the upper rear?
Spider13 07-10-2004, 11:32 AM I would be intrested if the price wasn't stupid high.
Max2k 07-10-2004, 12:32 PM I'd pay anywhere from $35-65 on this, it's only a piece of plastic.
hahajoey 07-10-2004, 05:46 PM I'd pay anywhere from $35-65 on this, it's only a piece of plastic.
that makes sense, but people also pay 250 bucks for vent visors.
and those are pieces of plastic..
people pay 150 bucks on that gas cap thingy as well..
i hope this smoke thing will be 35-65 thats awesome for the price
MyBoX 07-10-2004, 06:31 PM The real deal cost $270 plus shipping which should be around $60 to $100 so we are looking at $3XX something cover here, hope they can lower the price, wondering how he did fit that on the car if its for bB, take care Sean
squirrel 07-11-2004, 01:28 AM Adrian, I'm not sure what to think of those covers. If someone had say, a camo xB, I think it would look good. I'm not sure what to think.
BTW, nice integration of the fogs in your front lip. Gary's work?
Yoshi 07-11-2004, 01:31 AM I'd but them in a second.
CubiXBb 07-11-2004, 01:37 AM I think it looks good!
did you guys know that I called that dam company when I first got my scion adn I got an answering machine. And I left the number to the scion central, nothing. And I never did get interest in it again, but dam it looks good on a real car. :D
once again...How much?
Max2k 07-11-2004, 03:05 AM I'd pay anywhere from $35-65 on this, it's only a piece of plastic.
that makes sense, but people also pay 250 bucks for vent visors.
and those are pieces of plastic..
people pay 150 bucks on that gas cap thingy as well..
i hope this smoke thing will be 35-65 thats awesome for the priceYeah people pay $250 for vent visors, but how many? The vast, vast majority of people would never pay that much. If they offered this cover at a reasonable price, they'd sell a lot more of them.
DJ_X_Trodinaire 07-11-2004, 04:49 AM I likes
150dBxB 07-11-2004, 12:45 PM keep it as one piece!

i ownt pay more than $125 though
reppindaTC 08-11-2004, 04:14 PM nice
Mr_scion 08-11-2004, 07:34 PM i like it !!!!! will it fit over every grill ?
aneis 08-11-2004, 07:47 PM 1. I'm a tC owner, I know.
2. I don't "hate on" the xB. I think they're pretty effin' cool-looking
3. I don't particularly like this product. I don't think it looks clean. It looks too much like it was just "stuck on" instead of being well integrated.
4. In response to everyone praising his front lip foglights.... the driver-side foglight isn't mounted right. It's crooked. Now, to reduce the number of flames I get: No, my car has no mods. No, I could not do a better job myself. Yes, I do still feel it's okay for me to point that out. No, I don't think I'm an _______ for pointing it out.
k4kas 08-11-2004, 08:19 PM I like it.
I like the idea of a clear one as well.
Something nobody else has said,it must be easily removable!Just in case!
But must also not be able to blow off cruisin down the road!
bBOXD 08-12-2004, 04:19 PM I like it!! I'm in. Just need to know the price. Thanks.

aireck 10-16-2004, 06:33 AM bump...... are these even going into production???
2tone_xB 10-18-2004, 03:20 PM :D Thats my opinion.
Sure as hell I would try to save up if this product had a high price.
Prices vary depending on quality. Gotta be worth it if it had a high price.
OrAnGeBoX 10-19-2004, 01:51 PM come on give us some info on these

inquiring minds want to know
Ashe_WCM 10-19-2004, 02:16 PM I hate to be a jerk and all, but seeing as how someone asked about the legality of these thought I'd post. Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 108 States:
S7.8.5 When activated in a steady-burning state, headlamps shall
not have any styling ornament or other feature, such as a translucent
cover or grill, in front of the lens. Headlamp wipers may be used in
front of the lens provided that the headlamp system is designed to
conform with all applicable photometric requirements with the wiper
stopped in any position in front of the lens. When a headlamp system is
installed on a motor vehicle, it shall be aimable with at least one of
the following: An externally applied aiming device, as specified in
S7.8.5.1; an on-vehicle headlamp aiming device installed by the vehicle
or lamp manufacturer, as specified in S7.8.5.2; or by visual/optical
means, as specified in S7.8.5.3.
