Default Have you tried to shift into sixth?

I did without thinking, couldn't figure out why it wasn't going. I was double clutching and everything!

I think there is a switch, if there is any forward momentum, or even if you are stopped but facing downhill, it just won't go into "sixth."

No its there, just try a little harder. Make sure you double clutch and yank really really hard and when you hear the big bang and metal debris shooting out from under you car your in sixth gear.

I had an SVT Focus with the 6-speed Getrag before my xB. For about a month I had to keep telling myself "THERE IS NO SIXTH GEAR!!!".

I wish there was a sixth gear. It bothers me going 4k rpms at 80 mph.

Our xB is auto trans, but my xA is manual. I haven't actually tried to shift into 6th, but I keep thinking I must be in 4th. 3000 RMP at 60 MPH just doesn't seem right.

In olden times of MGBs and TR-3s, 3000 RPM at sixty was the standard, even with a 2 liter engine. A high sixth gear is the only other standard item I would like on my xB. Just don't mess with the other 5 ratios, I think they are fine.

The first time I took my box out on the expressway I told my wife that "this car needs a 6th gear"

I agree the first 5 gears are perfect and I love everything else about this car. Maybe the 2nd gen will have it but I'm not going to hold my breath.

When I mentioned the "olden times" above, in the MGBs etc, I should have mentioned that was with 4 speeds tranneys. The first 5 speed I recall was my 1966 Alfa. The Porsches from that era were much quieter on the highway as they had such low ratio rear ends, but they had poor excelleration. With 60 hp they probably were not as fast as an xB.

First of all I really hate the stick in my box, it's just too clunky (for lack of better terms) I really want to replace the stick, clutch, transmission...everything for that matter...but anyways I was in my s10 one day "racing" some dude in his acura integra I had him all the way through 5th...if only it had 6 speeds I would have won

I have an S10 and a box. The S10 is by far the worst shifting beast I have ever owned. I find the xB a joy to shift.

I had a B&M short throw and my dad did some things to the tranny when I first got it so mine shifted really nice. The xB was fun to shift when I first got it because it shifted with close to the same feeling of my truck but now that I've gotten used to it...it just bugs me lol

I also had an SVT Focus back in the day, and 2 1/2 weeks into owning an xB, I still want to do one last shift on the highway. The funny thing is with the SVT I remember everyone complaining about how worthless that gear was on the Focus forums.. As I recall in 5th gear at 75mph, you wouldn't be up around 4000rpm like our boxes, so 6th half the time seemed a little unnecessary.

And I have to agree with whoever said the box shifts a little clunky.

WTF? -- DOUBLE CLUTCHING?? -- Oh man, I haven't double clutched anything since I drove a dump truck for two summers back in the '70s. Then there was the '56 IH pickup I leaned to drive on in '68 or so . . . . I repeat; DOUBLE CLUTCHING?? (And yeah, I've tried for 6th a time or two ;^)
